From August to 24 October 1979, Corrie had no episodes due to a strike so this is a perfect opportunity to have a fanfic set in September 1979, featuring the residents where a few of them try delving into their ancestry. Stan Ogden does this, and goes on facts that he knows, then visits his parents grave, and finds out later on that he is related to another Street resident. Also a former resident returns for a visit and we get an appearance from a future character as a young boy. THE OPENING CREDITS ROLL. INT. OGDEN'S MAIN ROOM, MORNING. Stan is reading the paper and Eddie is smoking a fag while reading a book. Hilda walks in. HILDA By the left, are you two still here? EDDIE We are just off to work Mrs O. STAN Yeah just off to work. HILDA Well get your backsides out and do some work for your living then. I have to get to work in a minute. Stanley, you an all. STAN In a minute, not had breakfast. EDDIE Stanley, you just had a bacon roll. STAN Not enough though, want another one. EDDIE You useless wazzock Stan come on. STAN Ohhh OK then. I may visit my parents grave later on. HILDA Why, you have not been there for years. STAN It is the 45th anniversary of my late fathers passing today. EDDIE I dont blame him for that Mrs O, paying his respects to his late father. HILDA Oh alright then. But get to work now and do some grafting. EDDIE Grafting, Stanley? heheheeh. Stan gives a bemused look. EXT, CORONATION STREET, MORNING. Hilda leaves her house at No 13 while Mike Baldwin is talking to a delivery driver. MIKE So that is settled then? DRIVER Yes Mr Baldwin, I shall deliver the 5 rolls of denim tomorrow. MIKE Cheers. (Sees Hilda) Morning Hilda. Nice day for September isn't it? HILDA Morning Mr Baldwin. A black cab drives into Coronation Street and parks outside Ena's flat opposite the Corner Shop. INT, ROVERS RETURN. Hilda walks into the pub and is greeted by Annie and Fred Gee. FRED Morning Hilda love. ANNIE Good morning Mrs Ogden, how are you on this beautiful Friday morning? HILDA Fine chuck. ANNIE Well you are here early so if you start now you can leave 10 minutes early. FRED Makes a change doesn't it Hilda, being early for work. HILDA Ey less of your cheek you. Bet and Betty alight from the back room. ANNIE Well, well well, all my staff in the bar at the same time. I shall telephone the brewery now. BETTY Morning Hilda love. BET Yes morning Hilda. HILDA Morning, I am off to do me dusting now. FRED No singing Hilda please. BET Her singing is better than your talking. FRED Oh belt up will you Lynch. BET Certainly Fred Face. FRED Well come on we open up in 30 minutes, lets get these barrels ready and the pumps ready. BET Aye aye sir. BETTY Ee, Fred lad, if you was landlord of this pub I'd get a job elsewhere. EXT, NORTH CROSS CEMETERY, 2 OR 3 HOURS LATER. Stan Ogden parks his dustcart near the road. He has been working all morning cleaning windows. He has come to visit his parents grave in a secluded and wooded part of the cemetery. Stan walks through some overgrowth to the grave which is surrounded by vegetation, he sweeps some of it away to reveal his parents headstone. It says Isaiah Ogden, 4th April 1895-17th September 1934, also his beloved wife Mary Freda Ogden (Nee Langton), 18th July 1896-29th May 1957. STAN (To himself) Heck, I forgot what my mothers maiden name was, Langton. INT, ENA'S FLAT. Ena is sat relaxing, she gets a knock at the door and goes to answer it. ENA By gum. MINNIE Hello Ena. ENA Minnie Caldwell. Oh how I am glad to see you. Ena invites Minnie in. |

continued.... This part features a cameo from 21 year old Owen Armstrong, who is Brian Tilsley's old schoolfriend. MINNIE Cup of tea please Ena? ENA Ee, come all the way from Whaley Bridge and demanding stuff already. How is Handel treating you, good I hope. MINNIE Ooh yes, I am enjoying living in the countryside. ENA Makes a break from the "streets in the sky" towerblocks all over the area. MINNIE 30 years ago this area was full of terraced streets, now most are gone to make way for, shall I say hideous 20 storey towers. ENA Sit down Minnie, make yourself at home. How long you planning on staying? MINNIE Oh 2 or 3 days at least. ENA Good, I need some company. 15 years since Martha died and now you live t'other side of Manchester. Seems all my old friends have left me. MINNIE We still keep in touch by mail. ENA Tonight Minnie Caldwell, we shall go down the Rovers. EXT, CORONATION STREET. Brian Tilsley is repairing a guttering on Alf Roberts shop with his colleague, Owen Armstrong, who is his age. OWEN Come on Tilsley, pull your finger out I am doing all work here. BRIAN Oh shut it Armstrong. I am a mechanic by trade not a roofer. (laughs) Stan Ogden comes into Coronation Street from Rosamund Street with his dustcart. BRIAN Hello Stanley. STAN Bye heck, wont get me up there doing guttering. Whose your friend Brian? OWEN Owen Armstrong, I used to go to Bessie Street school with Tilsley. STAN Stan Ogden, my name is. OWEN Pleased to meet you Stan. STAN Better go in for lunch, Hilda has my bacon sandwich ready. INT, NO 13 CORONATION STREET. MAIN ROOM. HILDA Been down cemetery Stan? STAN Aye. (he sits down). The headstone is covered in bushes now, I did clear it a bit. I forgot what my mothers maiden name was until I saw it inscribed on the headstone. HILDA What is it? STAN Langton. My cousin on mums side had the names and dates on the grave inscribed. I have not been to mums grave since she died 22 years ago. Been too busy like. HILDA Langton. Ere, that is Ray's surname. to be continued...... |

continued... STAN Oh aye, it is an all. HILDA Maybe you need to check it out. STAN There must be several Langton's round here though? HILDA Well Ray is in Holland now but Deirdre may know, she is his ex. STAN I dont think she will want to be reminded of Ray. HILDA What was your mum's dads first name then? STAN Err, Stanley, same as me. I was named after Stanley Langton, my grandfather. My other grandfather, grandad Ogden, well he was Walter Ogden. Glad I was not named after him. HILDA Well Wally is short for Walter and a wally you can be, you and Eddie. STAN Bah. Eddie Yeats walks in. EDDIE Stanley, why did you leave me to put the dustcart away now? STAN I was tired weren't I? I am 57 you know. EDDIE You look and act 67 hehehe. STAN I went to my late dad's grave today. I have not been for a while and forgot that my mothers maiden name is said on the headstone. Langton. EDDIE Hey that is Ray's surname isn't it? To be continued.......... |
