What ever happened to the "going back to its origins" "Making the show reflect London again" and "Shoreditching up George Street"? None of this has happened, in fact he has pushed the show even further away from realism. Every character is creepy or has a hidden agenda, there is too much Carter dominance. Some seem to think DTC is some sort of saviour to the show. I think not. |

Barring the bit outside the Tube, when did we last see George Street? Does Billy still live there? Its all been a bit forgotten, the old Post Office never reopened and neither did the Argy Bhargee. I've been re-watching the early episodes from Feb 1985 through to about October 1985. Not only did they not have one single family dominate the main storylines (it was a fair blend of Watts, Beales and Fowlers with the others merging in well around them) but it reflected 1980s East End London; poverty, unemployment, immigration, gentrification by professional people etc I found myself really enjoying them and wanting to watch the next episode ASAP. The only thing that shocked me was the racism and the hefty swearwords that seemed to be acceptable at 7.30 at night which you won't hear today. |

Also in 1985 several characters either lived or worked away from the Square. Dr Legg drove from Islington to his surgery every day, the Beale's lived a 4 or 5 minute walk away in a nearby towerblock, Ali Osman drove people all over London in his taxi and Andy worked in the hospital, away from the square. Dot originally lived away from the square. I think the allotments which Arthur tended was a bus ride away, now it is behind the Polish shop/McKlunky's in George Street. Now everyone lives and works a 20 foot walk from their doorstep. And yes, George Street and the George Street end of Turpin Road has been completely forgotten. And we have never ever seen who lives at Walford Apartments or the flats above the chemist opposite. DTC said he would bring the show back to all that, and that was over a year ago, yet I have seen none of it so far, just a rare token ref to Hoxton or Nine Elms. |

I have been reading the book 'Eastenders The Inside Story' which tells the tale of how it all started. In that the suggestion is made that Dr Legg used to live above the surgery to start with, and then moved out to Islington later on as his lifestyle improved. At some point he then had the building converted sp there were 2 self contained flats plus his surgery. The flat above the chemist (ex Video shop) is the one Saeed lived in when his love for Christian was discovered. I thought Khoush was living there but the Wikia suggests he lives above the bookies (when did we last see anyone in there?!) Nine Elms! That got a mention back in 1985 when Pete Beale took Michelle over there one morning to collect some new stock for the stall! I must have missed the mention of Hoxton! |
