Many years ago, the world was full of magic and wonder. Wizards, magicians, sorcerers and witches roamed the earth. Magic was common place, and the world crackled with it's power. The laws of reality bent with their power, and they manipulated the world around them with the forces of their belief. During this time, men without the talent for sorcery discovered ways to bring about the same effects, without the need for this special "talent" that magi possessed. They combined the laws of the world, and bent them with science. They built massive machines with the power to crush mountains, fly through the sky, and level cities in a matter of seconds. Science rapidly gained a following among the section of humanity that lacked the mental aptitude to use magic, calling magi "Elitists", oppressors, or tyrants. That was the beginning of the war between science and magic. The war raged for years. Wizards destroyed machines with bolts of lightning from the sky, flames from their hands, and even bent the very oceans to their whims. The machines of the scientific world seemed to pale in comparison to the raw power of magic. That is, until the scientific coalition created the "Stella". the Stella were fierce machines of war built by the Regelius Corporation to assault the mages with powerful weapons powered by the emotions and feelings of man without endangering the Coalition soldiers. The Stella carved through the ranks of the Magical society, killing hundreds upon thousands of men and women. The mages were hard pressed to fight back. Near the end of the war, a small group of mages had an idea. If they forged their own Stella of both magic and science, they might be able to turn the war in their favor. The mages created their Stella, and forged for them 21 magical parts of great power. With these parts, the new Stella were able to fight back against Scientific Stella. It was unfortunately too late. Even with the might of the new Arcatek Stella, the damage had been done. The mages were too few to hold off the assault, and there was no longer enough faith to sustain their magical wonders. Magic slowly died out, and the war ended with the Coalition victorious. The earth had been destroyed in the war. It's surface had been marred and cratered, its oceans evaporated, and it it's people decimated. It could no longer sustain life thanks to efforts of the Coalition to "liberate" itself from the "Elitists". And so, humanity took to the stars, searching for the new Earth. Throughout the galaxy, they found many things, including small patches of planets that could support life, but none could hold the center of human existence. So, the humans created Asgard, a mobile space station that housed the central human government, and many of the residents of human space, which extended all across the galaxy. The Regelius Corporation, not desiring to lose their source of revenue after the war, created a new sport for the Stella. This new sport, composed of gladitorial combat between the Stella, commanded by their emotionally linked pilots, became the galaxy's favorite sport, an almost instant phenomenon. It grew and grew, until no home was without access to a feed of the action. Magic, on the other hand, faded into nonexistence. The Arcatek Stella parts are still nothing more than a legend. It is rumored that a few of the more skilled pilots in the Stella Combat circuit have been known to use one of these mythical parts, but these rumors can neither be confirmed nor debunked except by those who have had contact with them, and none have come forward. |
