What is a Stella -
A Stella is a robot built by the Regelius Corporation. Originally, these machines were used to fight the Magician's Society during the War between Science and Magic. In the modern era, Stella are advanced mobile units that are used in the galaxy's most popular gladiatorial combat sport, the Stella Grand Prix. The Stella are linked to a pilot through their neural uplink, and are powered by their emotions through the Emotional Transfer Circuit. Stella are roughly the size of a human.

Pilots -
Pilots are the humans that link themselves into the Stella through the Neural Link suit. This links their minds to the Stella frames, from which they are able to activate weaponry, move the Stella, use the Stella's boosters, and any number of other tasks. While pilots do not need to be physically adept, it helps. The Stella can only react if the pilot can react, and the pilot cannot react if his reflexes are not mentally queued in to the task at hand. For this reason, Pilots often train physically as often as they do with their Stella.

Emotional Circuit-
Stella are powered by the energy generated by the pilot and transferred into a capacitor for use by the Stella. This energy is accessible by the Stella pilot for activating and using their weapons, boosters, and moving of the Stella. There is a limit to how much energy can be stored and how much energy is generated based on the motion that the Stella is designed to run on. Some are powered by Lust, others by determination, fighting spirit, or in the case of some illegal parts, pain. Some Stella, those equipped with an Arcatek upgrade, have a second circuit that can charge the Stella with the power of Faith.

Why Compete?-
First and for most, Stella are used for sport, and thus, for entertainment purposes. Anyone can pilot a Stella, so long as they can produce the proper emotion necessary to move the Stella. Secondly, Stella duelists fight for prestige and other personal reasons that may be known only to them. Thirdly, It is a lucrative business. Sponsors of the Pro pilots shell out large amounts of money in order to advertise their products and have their names associated with the top pilots, and the pilots stand to make a large amount of money.
Finally, there are a few, explained in the illegal sector, that desire Stella for criminal purposes, such as illegal parts trafficking, or the use of Stella for their original purpose. Weapons.

Illegal Sector-
Every business can be corrupted, and Stella fights are no different. There is an underground sector traffics in Illegal Parts and Modifications, powerful parts that have been considered too dangerous to use in the standard circuit. Any person caught using these parts in a standard or pro match is immediately disqualified. In the underground sector, however, these parts are becoming more and more common as illegal Stella fights are held in various locations where pilots who want a little more danger and payout for their fights, and choose to use illegal parts to win at the risk of their own lives. In addition, there are many Stella Cartels in the shady parts of the galaxy who use Stella as weapons to control planets, neighborhoods, or even whole governments. There are also some secret syndicates that work to advance the Illegal Parts and Modifications market, making it even darker than it already is...

Gear Shift -
As stated above, there is a limit to the energy that a Stella's Emotional Circuit and Capacitor can contain and use. When the capacitor reaches full and a pilot is completely in tune with the emotion that is that powers their Stella, they can activate a state known as a Gear Shift. This is a sort of removal of limiters in the Stella and body. The feedback becomes more intense, the pilots emotions heighten, and the Stella begins to overclock it's systems. The Stella and Pilot are able to access a level of output normally incomprehensible in most situations. The energy output increases such that the Stella's physical abilities can reach above their normal peak, dependent on the newly heightened emotions of the pilot. Weapon output increases, shields become nearly impenetrable, and the battle seems won, unless both combatants activate a Gear Shift. There is a drawback to this level of power. The Stella and Pilot cannot handle this state for long. The heightened feedback and additional power output strain the pair, and can eventually drain them dry. A Pilot in this state for too long will become weary, and his Stella could begin to shut down due to lack of power.
