If you are new to healing or have always been a natural healer but never considered the effects to yourself, this post is for you. If you use a widely recognized technique such as Reiki, these tips may be irrelevant to you. But for those who use other methods, these can be important to keep in mind.

The ability to heal others is an incredible gift that can sometimes come with side effects depending on the method used. If you know that you suffer from side effects, this post is especially for you.

Protection First:
Any time we perform a metaphysical service to another, we open ourselves to anything which may be affecting their energy body, including potential malicious attachments. For this reason (especially for the inexperienced healer), it's important to make sure you have protection in place before you make a connection to the client, even if the client is family. A basic shield and use of the LBRP are good starting points. But don't be afraid to experiment with other methods.

The Need For Cleansing:
Unless you use a method which you know requires no after care to yourself, cleansing is very important after performing a healing session on another person. When we perform any metaphysical service to another person, we open ourselves to anything they may be suffering from on an energy level or even on a paranormal level. Sometimes even with protection, we may open ourselves to negative energy or take on symptoms of those we heal. So make sure that you use some sort of cleansing routine after each healing session you perform.

Taking On Symptoms:
It's common amongst healers to feel some or all of the symptoms of those they heal. These symptoms may be temporary, lasting a matter of minutes, to something more permanent. Protection and cleansing routines will minimize this. But you still may feel the pain of those you heal. This is due to the connection made during the healing activity. When performing a healing technique, it's common to feel the pain of the client through the telepathic link. While bothersome, this can also be useful to a healer when a client fails to disclose all of their symptoms. You may be able to use this link to sense problems they fail to mention and address them directly.

When A Client Complains of Pain:
Pain is a common complaint which may or may not have an obvious cause. If the client knows the cause, you can adapt your routine accordingly. If the underlying cause is inflammation of some sort and you are accustomed to using visualization for healing, you can focus visualization on reducing the inflammation directly. An alternate method that I've used is visualizing running a hand over the affected area to draw off the "heat" of inflammation and casting it off. If the client is sitting with you and physical contact is possible, using physical motion during this visualization can aid the effort.

As a note: any responsible healer should also advise a client to seek qualified medical assistance.

Adapting Your Methods:
Anyone with a natural ability to heal others can learn and adapt their methods. Never underestimate your ability. Physical contact can make a huge difference, but even without physical contact the right visualization and focus can do wonders. Listen to your gut. Pay attention to your instincts. And use logic when dealing with a known issue. Inflammation or swelling benefits from reduction. Lack of proper circulation benefits from flow. Exposed nerves benefit from calm. Use logic and instinct, and learn from experience. If something doesn't work, try a new approach.

What to Do if a Client is Unresponsive:
If your best efforts seem to make no difference...again...recommending a visit to their regular doctor is the most responsible thing you can do. If you know of a more experienced healer, you can also recommend them. Any good healer must always have the best interest of the client in mind.
