Okay, so this is a roleplaying forum. Something that's, like, super bad to do on a roleplaying forum is godmodding. And although it is super easy if you just godmod everything, you should definitely still avoid doing it. "But Mr. Supnitle the most amazing guy ever!" You say. "I don't even know what godmodding is! How do I avoid it, best person ever who is amazing and the best at actual everything ever!" And I'd say, "please get out of my house." A GUIDE TO GODMODDING Godmodding, as a term, has like, a thousand different definitions, but we can boil it down to three. One definition is that the person RPing takes absolutely no hits and dodges everything. For example, let's look at a godmodding post with this definition:
What was wrong with the second post is that Panda, as a character, does not have ridiculous agility as an ability; or at least, he isn't fast enough to dodge 3 bullets suddenly coming at him with no warning. If anything, he should have taken at least a few bullets counter attacking. Your characters are not invincible - they should take a hit if it would make sense for them to take a hit, as it does here. In any case, let's look at that post again, if I fixed this definition of godmodding.
So, that definition of godmodding is fixed. Yaaay. But there's still something wrong with our post! Another way to godmod is to just automatically land a hit on another character without even giving them a post to react. If your character wants to punch another in the face, you do not say,
That would be auto hitting. You assumed that you hit the other person, not allowing them to duck or dodge or block or hit your fist to form a brofist or something. Whether or not the attack hits is up to the other RPer. So don't assume your attacks hit! Just say that you DID the attack, not whether or not it hit.
Yeah, like that. Let's see Panda's post fixed by removing the auto hit.
Yaaaay, now the post is good more or less. (Why is there a panda?) There's a third type of godmodding, though, and this one's a lot easier to understand: blatantly controlling a character that isn't yours. Don't say someone's character did something, whether it's getting hit by your attack, saying something, poking a wall, whatever. Don't force actions onto them to fit your post. That kind of defeats the purpose of roleplaying with another person. This can apply to NPCs they bring into the topic as well, unless you ask to control them and they agree. |
