The Holy Order of Light. Strange place, that. They count themselves among the eldest of organizations in the world, and rightfully so. A handful of the world's earliest known written manuscripts belong to their fore-fathers. Of course that doesn't necessarily reflect positively on them. An organization of religious zealots and radicals, they're tolerated by most kingdoms because they do, ultimately, do more good than harm, however, more than one Paladin of The Order has been put to death for attacking and/or killing a member of nobility of this nation or that, having discovered that said noble was corrupt and abusing their power. Each Paladin killed in this manner accepted his or her death in silence, never showing remorse, never apologizing, never saying anything at all. Such is their way.

You see, the order is founded upon the principle that mortal justice is only well and good when it matches up with divine justice. When an initiate is brought into the order, they are taught to disregard the arbitrary laws of men, and to adhere strictly to the laws of the divine. There are arguments on both sides of the fence as to whether this is a good or a bad thing, of course. Those idealists acknowledge that the Paladins, the sword-arm of The Order, are pursuing a path of righteousness that few mortal men and women have the courage and conviction to tread. And to that end, I agree. However, there are also those who point out that Paladins have very little sense of mercy, often considered to be the chiefest of divine qualities, when dealing with those who've broken their laws. And, of course, there's the arrogance of the order, to believe that their laws apply to every man, woman, and child on the planet, regardless of beliefs, national affiliation, or heritage.

But all philosophical debates on their stances and practices aside, none can deny the efficiency with which a Paladin carries out their duties. While some might believe that The Order is for naught but the insane and homicidal, I beg to differ. I have, with my own two eyes, witnessed the impressive tenacity and dedication that the Paladins of The Order adhere to, and I have done so by traveling with one of their number, Paladin Commander Jerec Mo'tella, one of the most famed and feared of the order.

Before we began our travels together, Jerec was famed already, for he exemplified The Orders traits, both positive and negative. Born a half-blood Aegyl to the nation of Dualin, he lived with his Aegyl father and Elvaan mother only ten years before he accepted a conscription call into The Order. For another ten years, he was cloistered away within the walls of their inner sanctum, and when he finally emerged, the boy had become a man of unshakable faith and resolve. He had become a Paladin.

Now, because I know there are, no doubt, readers who aren't familiar with what, exactly, this entails, I will explain the nature of Paladins. Each Paladin of the order is sent out into the world, without support, without further guidance as well, most of the time. They are sent to travel the world, to do as their faith commands them, to seek out the forces of evil and darkness, and to purge those forces by any means necessary, short of falling into darkness themselves. These Paladins are to swear allegiance to no mortal, and are to adhere, strictly, to the laws of the divine. So much as one singular violation of those laws results in the Paladin being branded a traitor, and The Order itself calling a hunt for the fallen member. It's a very difficult thing to satisfy the demands of the gods with every moment of every day, and these hunts are called quite regularly.

Jerec Mo'tella, first earned his fame as what the general populace calls a 'Kinslayer'. While he was equally adept at purging evil and darkness from the world, his true specialty, it seemed, was in hunting down those rogue members of the order who turned traitor. Often referred to by his nickname 'The Angel of Death', Jerec's efficiency and speed not only made him an excellent Paladin, but it also made him difficult for national law enforcement agencies to apprehend.
