![]() Q: wat A: Remember FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AGO when I started asking people if I could have their characters make cameo appearances in my RPG Maker game I was working on? Well, here it is. It's done. Q: Explain. A: First Fantasy is a ZFRP-inspired RPG made using RPG Maker XP. It uses a basic turn-based battle system similar to the remake version of Final Fantasy 1 (GBA, PSP, etc). If you don't like traditional RPGs this game probably isn't for you. Q: Is it ZFRP canon? A: No. While a number of RP characters appear, and some of them are playable, First Fantasy is an alternate universe taking place in the country of Mysidia. It tells the story of how Sarah the white mage met Alexander Triden, and it went very differently here than in RP. Q: How do I play? A: Arrow keys move your character. Enter to confirm, Escape to cancel or pause. Hold down Enter to dash. You'll find more detailed instructions in the first town, which features a tutorial. Q: What's with the odd choices for which characters get roles and which don't? A: This game was developed over a period of five years, and RP changed a lot in the meantime. Some of the characters that appear in this game have faded into the background or have completely vanished in actual RP. Q: I can't get it to work. A: RPG Maker, as Chao will tell you, is notoriously finicky and complicated to get to run sometimes. This game SHOULD work as-is for people using Windows Vista or higher on a desktop or laptop. If it doesn't work, I'm just as likely to know the reason as not, because who knows with these dang things sometimes. If you have any further questions, just ask. Screenshots

Version 1.1, previous version had a game-breaking bug in which a crucial NPC fails to appear. You can copy your save file over to this updated version and it should work without incident. Note that in order to play, you need to install the accompanying RPG Maker program. Edited by Gooper Blooper, Apr 27 2017, 09:40 AM.

Version 1.2. New updated version with some minor fixes and changes. -Some bosses/minibosses are now more vulnerable to Sleep and Poison, making those specials less useless. -Fixed an error where a certain miniboss can be challenged repeatedly until the area boss is slain. -Fixed a postgame character graphic to have a better walking animation. -Changed some postgame messages intended to be solely for Chao to thank him for bugtesting. They are now general messages for the community. Known errors I cannot fix (they require scripting expertise I do not have): -In certain situations, such as using items on characters in the menu out of battle, the fifth party member is not displayed. Simply press down when highlighting the fourth member and you'll be able to give things to the fifth member. -HP and MP bars remain on screen when enemies flee battle. -MP bars do not refill properly when MP is restored. Using a move that requires MP will fix the bar. -Invisible enemies have visible HP and MP bars. Edited by Gooper Blooper, Apr 28 2017, 10:23 PM.

Which way to the baby war?

After spending the past few days neck deep in this game, I thought I'd give you guys a review on it! I shall avoid spoilers as I give you my hot take on it, but if you're wondering if I liked it, well... I was able to completely ignore my Switch and Breath of the Wild that had arrived right as this game was released until I was able to complete it :V FIRST FANTASY REVIEW! First Fantasy is a traditional JRPG in the style of the early Final Fantasy games, and if I had to describe it in one pitch line, it would have to be "Final Fantasy 1 by way of Final Fantasy 4". First Fantasy combines the elements and structure of the original Final Fantasy game with the character focuses and rotating party of Final Fantasy 4. The map design and combat certainly lean more towards the later sprite-based Final Fantasies, although it is turned based battles rather than active time battles. Nicely though, First Fantasy has a few moments that mix up the traditional RPG gameplay, so it's not all random battles! They story itself, while trending close to FF1 initially, really begins to find its legs in its second half, where Gooper's creativity begins to shine. With a mix of original characters and ones who appeared in ZFRP, Gooper manages to create a game that works in the cameos without relying entirely on "Hey, remember THIS guy?" Gradually even the strangers grew on me, and your party is decently varied in their capabilities. The only thing I will note for your benefit is don't be afraid to equip your party members with good gear, characters come and go but they do return later! Naturally, the game also has a pretty good sense of humor too, and some pretty rocking music borrowed from classic video games. One surprising thing I found was the difficulty was pretty excellently balanced! It managed to be pretty challenging while not being a cakewalk, and I got a reasonable amount of Game Overs over the course of the game. The ability to save anywhere outside of battle smooths over any possible irritation in losing, and the game has healing crystals positioned so expertly inside dungeons that you would think it was someone's job to place them just far enough that you'll be just scraping by when you stumble across the next one. Also, Gooper wisely gave characters a pretty large MP pool, meaning you don't have to sit on your good abilities the whole time in case a boss is coming up. Being able to use skills and magic in a random battle is something that not even main game Final Fantasies could get me to do sometimes since it was so punishing to your MP reserves! The game, admittedly, works within the constraints of the program it was designed in, and it has a few quirks, but they are certainly manageable and often negligible. If you liked the old style of JRPGS though, you certainly can't go wrong playing it, but if you're coming solely for the ZFRP cameos, most of them are post-game bonus content. Thankfully, the main story never really slowed down or felt repetitive. I didn't have to adjust my usual approach to these kind of games (save where the game allowed me to explore things more freely, like the earlier mentioned MP management), so I'm not sure how others might experience it if they actually do occasionally run away from random battles, but on the whole I think First Fantasy is an excellent throwback to these old RPGs and worth a look if you want to get stuck in your classic fantasy journey, with a dash of ZFRP goodness thrown on top! |

Thanks for the great review, JRM! Skill use is actually something I specifically planned for, yes - the game is designed to allow heavy use of skills throughout the game, and in fact, especially early on, you pretty much have to use magic a lot if you want to finish battles in a timely manner. Also, certain skills never miss, which is another plus since regular attacks don't always find their mark. I also aimed to make MP pools big enough to allow skill use while small enough so that you'd still want some MP-restoring items on hand. Plus, the crystals ensure you're always topped up before a major fight. Version 1.3 has been released, with a few more changes and fixes. -A few more minibosses are now vulnerable to Sleep and Poison on top of the ones from 1.2. -In previous versions, it was possible to re-activate an old cutscene that could potentially reset one of your party members to their initial stats. This has been fixed. -A boss encounter could be re-activated and eventually break the game. This has also been fixed. -In previous versions, the game's files contained all 40-plus animation frames of Sad News Sine. This is because I used RPG Maker XP's image importing function to add transparency to my pictures for several years of RP. :V I deleted most of them before releasing First Fantasy but these were in another folder and slipped through the cracks. They have now been removed. The most recent download link has expired. Contact me or someone with it downloaded to get a reupload. Edited by Gooper Blooper, May 2 2017, 07:41 PM.
