Belfast Uprising kills 147! January, 1936 Following a wave of pro-independence violence in North Ireland Nationalist rebels numbering in the hundreds have risen up in support of uniting all of Ireland under the Republican banner, and have taken most of the city of Belfast, Ireland. The Nationalist rebels lead by Colonel Darragh have seized control of the Belfast Police Stations, and attempted an raid on the local British army barracks which was soundly defeated. Following this failure the Nationalists executed most of the police officers, and started to setup defenses positions leaving themselves technically in charge of the city even though the Barracks and the Harland & Wolff Heavy Industries shipyard remains in British hands. Results: United Kingdom: 47 Police officers killed 100 Civilians Unknown number of Nationalist rebels - 2DP (oh no, the Irish are causing Empire problems for us again!) - .2% GDP Growth (shipbuilding in the city has ground to an halt) Increased Irish nationalism. Ethiopian Southern front collapses! Italian artillery in Ethiopia, 1936 In Ethiopia the Battle over Genale Doria started off 1936 with an Ethiopian offensive against entrenched Italian forces in Somaliland. The Ethiopian Empire's forces of 24,000 strong faced entrenched Italian troops numbering only 20,000 under the command of General Rodolfo Graziani. In a seen reminiscent of the trench warfare of the Great War Italian troops in fortified trenches supported by light armor, bombers, and artillery found themselves facing wave after wave of Ethiopian Infantry and Calvary. Air support proved critical in breaking up the attack as the Italian Air Force took to the sky's, and used bombers such as the Caproni Ca.133 and the Caproni Ca.135 to great effect to break up Ethiopian offensives. This air support made the remaining Ethiopian troops who continued to advance easy to deal with for the entrenched Italian forces. Causalities on both sides were high, however the Italian forces routed the Ethiopian offensive after just 16 hours of fighting. After reporting his victory to Rome General Rodolfo Graziani took the initiative, and in an stunning display of Italian military prowess the Italians advanced 145 miles in just four days. Unfortunately during the advance it was discovered that Italy's light tankettes were unsuitable for the terrain along the Southern Front, and many became bogged down. Ethiopian reconniance units seeing this weakness quickly took advantage of Italy's bogged down tankettes, and took out 15 of them during the retreat. Results: Italy: +3 DP (Victory will be ours!) Italian troops advanced nearly unapposed 145 miles in 96 hours. - 150 Infantry kia - 350 infantry wounded - 15 Tankettes Ethiopia: - 5 DP (Are we loosing this fight?) The Southeren Front has effectivly collapsed. Attempts are being made by commanders to re-group at Jijiga, or Harar in order to defend the local railway. - 4,000 Infantry either mia, or kia. - 2,500 Calvary either mia, or kia. Battle for Jijiga! In an surprizing turn of events the Eithopian forces rining Jijiga in hastily constructed trenches and fortified structures are still standing strong after an two day aerial bombardment, and more than five day's of fighting off General Rodolfo Graziani's forces. Italy's offensive began early in the morning of January 10'th with Italian air power bombing the city's of Jijiga and Harar focusing on Supply Depots, Railways, air defense guns, air fields, and reinforcements of which nearly 1,000 arrived from near by Harar when it became obvious that Jijiga was to be the focus of the Italian offensive. While only somewhat successful at knocking out the local airfields, and damaging some rail infrastructure the air strikes had the advantageous effect of keeping Ethiopian troops pinned down, which enabled the Italians to bring forward artillery and shell Jijiga. On the third day of combat Italian infantry advances forced the closure of Jijiga's Train Station. The infantry assault soon followed, and advanced into Jijiga breaking the front lines but failing to take the city due to the presence of large numbers of Ethiopian infantry. Fierce fighting was reported around Jijiga's Train Station as both sides attempt to control the strategic supply route. Further Italian attempts on the 15'th and 16'th to drive out the remaining Ethiopian defenders were relatively unsuccessful, and Italy now controls just over half of Jijiga with Ethiopian forces controlling the other half. Results: Italy: -1 DP (Stronger resistance than anticipated) +2 DP (The army is gaining ground) - 350 Infantry (half wounded, the rest kia) -50 Calvary Ethiopia: Green text+2 DP (Will Jijiga Hold?) -950 Infantry(75% kia, the rest wounded) -50 Artillery pieces, 35%of the AA guns around Jijiga are silenced Rail link severed due to Italian's and Ethiopian's fighting over the train station Edited by Vonar Roberts, Nov 19 2012, 08:07 AM.
