I was actually once like Mariners and Makers in that I was not really about doing this but once I did one, I thought it was a great idea and I was totally wrong about it.

I actually enjoyed how much I learned by doing a little reading on mlb.com and other sites about the prospects in the draft.

Just adds a fun element to things.

I have lost a lot of good players in the two years but added some nice players as well.

I enjoy having a little more control while still getting guys my team actually took.

Yeah I can see how it would do that and I also like how we're able to gain more control of who we want from it.

I just think that me and Mariners didn't really understand how this worked at first, and I know I was just upset when I had first joined because I didn't know why Shooter Hunt and a couple other top prospects weren't actually mine til just now.

But now that I understand it more I actually am kind of a fan of it, and I see I have some good players from other teams as well to compensate for what i lost.

i just want you to understand i never had the intention of making this conversation go like it did.....i dont like the draft and was not aware if it was a new thing or one of the things that just comes with these leagues so i wanted to discuss it.. plain and simple pure motives. in the end i have zero power and my opinion is insignificent i just wanted to see what people thought...mabey i will like it mabey i wont but it matters little ethier way becuase it is what it is im sorry for my harsh dialect though.

The FYPD is a great way to familiarize yourself with the prospects of tomorrow.

The days of relying on John Sickels are over.

There are numerous resources one can avail themselves of when learning about the kids chosen in the 1st 3 rounds or so.
Just google their names and you'll get dozens of scouting reports and articles.

The FYPD allows you to draft based on the needs of your actual fantasy team.

Plus...it's just tons of fun.

And in a couple of years when we start to see the results of our own drafting...it'll really be fun.

Then we can brag on our gems...and hope nobody picks up on our busts.
I envision threads being created dedicated to discussing busts and steals.

And for young guys like MarinersGM whose lives are jam packed....it only takes a couple of hours research.

The FYPD is dope. ;)

I didn't thoroughly read this whole thread as there seemed to be a lot of personal animosity.

I fully support the draft. With it being three rounds, we're only looking at 60 players being drafted. There is readily available information on these guys. I understand that we don't/can't actually go around scouting these guys, but it's the same with our minor leaguers and even major leaguers. Around the time of our draft, you can get some good information easily from mlb.com, BA, BP, Sickels, etc. The real draft also would've been completed already, giving you an idea of the general value of the prospects selected.

The draft reflects the status of the teams in this league better than just going with the picks that our team makes. In this league, we could have a team struggling that needs to rebuild their minors with high draft picks, while their MLB counterpart could be a contender that signs a type A free agent, thus losing their first round pick.

WOW! this is gettin crazy! i mean the draft is a good thing IMO. Last years draft was my 1st and i didnt know any of those players but i went and googled them and youtubed them and looked at my aging positions and drafted the best players available! i think the draft is a good thing IMO it makes bad teams (like mine) have a chance to think they can turn things around! last year i drafted Pedro Alvarez and Gordon Beckham 2 top 5 picks that i feel are going to help my team in the near future so even though they wouldnt be in my farm system i was still able to go get some good quality talent and im glad we have the draft!

Nice draft Astros.

Beckham almost made the team this season out of spring training....and has a very nice bat for a SS.
Good pop potential.

Pedro Alverez has a big time power bat and could stay at 3B...or move to 1st or the OF.

2 very nice picks.

And this is why we do it, great example of what picking for ourselves could do in the early rounds of the draft.

You dont think i wish I had Justin Smoak? Of course I do but I also picked up guys I WANTED to compensate.

everyone has made good points. i'll add these to the side of liking the way we do the FYPD.

1) we do not have to worry about signability issues here. The guys we draft are allowed to be stashed in our farm system for free until they make the MLB club. so a player (Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Rick Porcello...basically every 1st round pick by the Tigers lately besides Perry lol) that would normally not go to a team in the top 10 because of money, that team in this league isn't screwed because their real life GM is a cheap ass. you get the elite talent when you SHOULD get him, which is at the top of the draft.

2) we do not have a full 30 team league, which means we basically are always drafting higher than we would be since we don't have 30 teams drafting.

3) as Astros said, you can really make some noise if you do just a little bit of research. Or, you can have one of the top 3 or 4 players selected in real life fall to you as I did. Getting Brian Matusz at 11th Overall was a steal for me IMO.

4) You can draft players that you like, or have a need for in your farm system. Say you're Position Player deep, but don't have any solid arms. You can do what I did and just go after 3 top flight arms with a lot of projection. Or vice versa with Position Players.

there are a few more good points about having it ourselves, but you get the point. if there really are more than just a few that don't like this style, let me know and eventually if it's the majority of the league, maybe things could change. for now though, its just been too successful to end it.

I want to apologize to Mariners for the way I initialed handled this thread, I just felt that as a new guy he was attacking something we had done successfully for two years without even trying to get the facts or why we did it.

I felt the way the Twins went about in was a much better way in addressing the matter and trying to get the information on the how and why of the first year player draft.

Matt knows I am a good guy and that this is not generally how I go about handling stuff.
