And despite the great loss of lives, Sulport stood united once more under the rule of the mighty beheader, Volstagg. Never had a city seen such carnage as that of the berzerkers. The feasting of wild larls and sleen upon the dead or dying had been macabre. The message these actions sent were clear. Death to betrayers and anyone who would dare to stand against Sulport. The story of what happened within the walls of this city was likely to spread far and wide so that all may know. Once the signal had been given that the streets were cleared, I had left the hall and returned to the dock-side building that now served both as my office and as my residence. A quick inspection revealed the building had suffered no damage, aside from the smoke. And there had been no loss of inventory. A small miracle, considering the building seemed to be cursed...between death and fire....I could hardly believe it had escaped nearly untouched. I reclined back upon the chaise lounge, within the upper compartment of the building. It was quiet save for the cry of the gulls beyond the lattice-like shading that obscured the open balcony overlooking the docks of Sulport. The chaise-lounge was cast mostly in shadow so that any that might look upon that front-facing balcony would be unable to see within. Often I relaxed in such a manner, watching the ships as they arrive and depart. A meager sampling of fruit, cheese and bread still occupied that platter. I had hardly touched any of it. The goblet of wine remained as well, nearly full. I had been hungry but found the food had little taste. And my appetite had nearly dwindled to nothing. Perhaps it had been all the bloodshed. Or the memory of sliding that blade into a betrayers back, over and over again, until life left his body. Heat flushed along the slopes of my cheeks as the memory flashed through my mind. It had felt...too good. And even though it had been the right thing to do, I wasn't certain I should have enjoyed it this much. The murderous act had sated an expression of anger but stirred something... unspeakable. I retrieved a piece of the cubed cheese, allowing my teeth to slowly bite into the meat of it. The flavor was sharp and rich. I tried not to think about the feel of flesh parting beneath the blade, or the warmth of the blood as it coated my hand.....I closed my eyes as I chewed the remainder of the small piece of cheese, unable to think of anything else. And once I swallowed, I took a long drink of the wine, washing it down. It was good wine---but for the life of me, I could not recall from where it had come. Sunlight pierced the darkness in the shape of diamonds, the rays cast through the openings of the lattice work that obscured the balcony from direct view. I peered discreetly from the darkness, watching the docks of Sulport. The roving of guards had become lax, mostly due to the lack of manpower. Sulport had lost many men with last nights events. But I could see the stub-nosed dock Master, walking the planks of the docks with his ledger in tow. A disappointed sound was emitted as the line of generous lips was pulled into a tight sneer at seeing the man alive. He was vile man, who enjoyed his position far too much. It surprised me a bit too, that he was loyal to Volstagg. The man seemed a ost pretending to be human. The rim of the goblet was pressed to my lips as I took another drink of the wine. Sunlight glinted upon the faucets cut into the metal as I lifted it in the light. This small reflective flicker was enough to alert the man to my presence, his face lifting towards the balcony as his eyes fixed upon the archway where I stood. And despite the lattice-enclosed arch, he knew I was there...watching. His expression changed, the menace of a glare fixed upon his tarsk-like features. I took another drink, lifting the goblet towards him as though in toast before turning away from the balcony. Leaving him to guess at the movements now lost to silhouette and shadows. I did not like him. And some day......... |
