I had been woken by the sounds of the docks below. The urgent voices of men, bellowing their orders for departure or docking, carried through lattice-covered windows of the balcony. The balcony itself was secluded from view this way, offering a bit of privacy, affording me a shelter from which to spy the happenings upon the docks. It was also the only source of natural light for the upstairs compartment above my office. The alley could be accessed via the door downstairs, but that was a dark and dangerous place, where mostly drunks, thieves and whores could be caught throughout the day. Sunlight streams broken into an array of diamond patterns by the slatted wood-work of lattice, a dance of dark and light across the natural wood of the floor. The sun was high in the sky, telling me it was at best half over and at worse, the evening might already be creeping upon us. I flung the furs back, draping slip-covered legs over the edge of the chaise that served as my bed. Small feet landed near silently upon carpet covered planks of the floor. Despite the sun, the air was cool, nipping at my skin. The seasons would be changing and I could feel the breath of winter. Inky strands of obsidian fell in untamed waves about the narrow shelf of shoulders, like a cloak of shadow made of silk, haunting the line of my back. A shiver wove its way along my spine and instinctively, I wrapped my arms about my chest for warmth. The fingers of my right hand splayed, clutching the round of my left shoulder. A recollection played in my mind, perfectly shaped lips pressed into a smile then. As the tips of fingers slid over the smooth flesh, drawn slowly down the curve of outer arm from shoulder to elbow, I exhaled slowly, resigned to begin the day as soon as I could. It was heavy, the handle fashioned from wood worn-smooth from use, as I lifted the prodded end into the brazier to shift the coals and stir the embers within. The fire had nearly died out, leaving only the soft orange glow in the rounded belly. This slight movement provoked the warmth to spread and the coals began to produce heat once more, the repositioning more conducive to the flow of air. Once sufficiently warmed, I returned the prod to its hook and stood slowly to my feet. Bare feet whispered steps as I turned from the chaise and wandered slowly towards the rear wall of the compartment. The halter of a white slip clung about the slender curve of my neck, that material ghosted the contours of my body demurely but left the length of back entirely exposed and its length billowed around my legs and ankles. The skirt was slit high enough that as I walked, the length of legs were glimpsed clear up to the smooth, taunt muscles of lean thighs. It was the most comfortable and my most favored sleeping gown. Though it provided no warmth at all. My path from the chaise towards the wardrobe was littered with a series of yawns, a stretch and the tug of slender fingers through the dark mane of rampant waves. I took several deep breaths, encouraging the flow of blood in my veins, forcing my mind and body to wake. Before the open doors of the wardrobe, I paused, considering the days apparel. I had many things to do and this would effect my final choices. Generous lips pressed together in silence, skewed into crooked line of dismay. All of these garments at my disposal and not a single thing to wear. It was the trouble of having so many choices. I mused slightly, I would just have to make something do. I was not always so meticulous, but on this day, it felt warranted. Call it female intuition, if it must be named, but the feeling came from deep wtihin my bones that today would mark the beginning or the end of something. Gathering the garments of choice, I began to layer the materials together. Pieces were kept, while others were discarded as I matched colors and patterns until pleased with the final compliation. And of course, I would select footwear last. When it felt complete, I turned to the small dressing table and took a seat, beginning to assess the state of my hair. Up or down, twisted or braided...this was my least favorite part of it all. I never knew what to do with the thick forest of dark hair that refused to do anything except what it wanted. I coiled long slivers around my fingers, drawing the pieces up and back then securing them artfully about the crown of my head using jet-tipped pins that blended near seemlessly amid all that darkness. As I turned my head, the jet tips reflected the light, almost a crown of darkness to glitter in my hair. I enjoyed the effect it created at least. Vagrant pieces escaped the design, falling to grace the slope of high cheek bones and tease about the contours where jaw and neckline verged together. It would do. Now then, to dress. The many layers were a pain but important. I took my time, dressing leisurely. The ties of the slip were unknotted, the material whispered its descent as it pooled at my feet and I stepped free of it. The outfit was layered, though once on it might appear to be all one piece. Stepping into the waist of a long skirt of silvered-grey, it was drawn up the length of my legs and secured in place. A long sleeved blouse in the same shade was eased over my head and tucked neatly into the waist of the skirt. High lapels were ironed smooth, creating a sharp frame that v'ed abruptly high at the center of my chest, leaving not even the leather throng of my pendant necklace visible. Atop this layer, a stola was added, the material a glistening silver and hung diagonally across my body. It fell in a long gracefup drape from my right shoulder to hit mid-thigh, its hem was decorated with beading like rain-drops that shimmered with every subtle movement. I fixed this in place by adding a sash of brocaded material to wrap the slender circle of my waist. It was this brief slip of material that was the lavish, thick and embroided in shades of silver and blue, knotted carefully nearly my right hip. I sat upon the chair then, adding a pair of comfortable but fashionably designed sandals to small feet, though they'd be hidden from view beneath the length of my skirts. Once fully clothed, I stood before the mirror to make the final decision. The soft gray and silver of the material was a bit lavish but enhanced the ivory-white of what little skin could be seen. The silver somehow enhanced the flash of those pale green eyes and I felt, it suited me reasonably. A well dressed woman was always better prepared for whatever might come. |
