Anax Kerameikos snorted as he looked at the map again. “It wasn’t so long ago that I was considering writing a congratulatory letter to Medai for a successful and unopposed conquest,” he murmured to himself. “And now we find another nation sitting in that very territory, galvanized by our ally’s invasion. To think,” he said more clearly, turning toward Basileus Kypseli, “that our ally, Medai, should take on the role of the Dorians in our own history. Makaria has always been an ironic goddess…” Kypseli shrugged his shoulders. “I will leave that to the priests,” he said. “The only opinion I have on the matter is that it would have been nice to allow our first international ally to obtain some coastline along the Reval Ocean, if only so that we could more easily ship goods there by sea. At the moment, the shipment of our natural resources to Medai remains somewhat more expensive than it should be; certainly international interest in our products will fall if we are capable of selling them more cheaply.” Kerameikos nodded again toward the map. “Nonetheless, we sell enough to Medai to make our initial forays into economics in the west worthwhile,” he said. “And regardless of whether or not Medai has a shoreline on the Reval Ocean, it is certain that Brasilia does. What we cannot sell to our first ally, perhaps we can sell to our latest—as long as this newcomer agrees to an alliance in the first place.” The basileus turned to look at the map as well. “They might not appreciate an alliance with a nation that is allied to their recent invader.” “They might not care, either,” Kerameikos replied. “Medai invaded territory that was, at the time, unheld; the previous empire had just dissolved into nothing. The nation that has risen from the ashes might understand the position of Medai, and have no grudge about it. Might,” he repeated in response to Kypseli’s raised eyebrow. “Forgive me my optimism here.” “I might ask if you were drunk before you began this letter writing process,” Kypseli commented. “To be an optimistic anax is to invite disaster upon one’s self and one’s nation.” Kerameikos snorted. “I would love to be drunk at the moment,” he said seriously, “but unfortunately that cannot explain my current mental state. Perhaps I am just so weary of constant cynicism that I have turned away from my usual mood, if only for a single night.”

"That sounds fantastic, and as for trading vessels, we do check them all before they reach our ports via our coast guard. Does your nation do similar checks, or are incoming trading vessels not regulated?" |

The ambassador took a sip of water. “We allow outbound vessels to depart relatively unhindered specifically because they are under the Megaron’s direction,” he said. “The same cannot be said for any incoming shipments, unless they are being held on Achaian vessels. Our primary concern is and has always been our national security. Incoming vessels from any foreign port require extensive checks upon entering our national waters. We also inspect all shipping once it arrives in any Achaian port, in case it has slipped through our naval patrols.” Patmos shrugged. “We certainly have no objection to allowing Brasilian officials check our trading vessels as they enter Brasilian waters, considering our own policies. It is a very sensible precaution, in our eyes.” |

"That sounds great, so, what else should we discuss?" |

“I think at this point I cannot avoid bringing up the primary motive for our invitation,” Ambassador Patmos said, “the current state of war in Noverra. I know that your government has sent an ambassador to Medai to take part in the neutrality summit, as the Megaron has also done; certainly we can look forward to working with each other for that reason alone. But neutrality in the current conflict is no guarantee of safety in any other, nor is there any guarantee that the neutrality pact in Medai will actually work as planned. Anax Kerameikos is very interested in making fast friends throughout the world in the hopes of learning from other nations exactly how modern militaries operate. Indeed, if it is at all possible, we would like to send certain of our officers to Brasilia to operate under your command for a time, in order to learn through both formal lessons and actual experience—hopefully in training exercises, but if necessary, also in war—how Brasilia fields a modern and successful military.” The ambassador took another sip of water. “I understand that this might be a bit much to ask. Nonetheless, training and technology are the two deficiencies that Achaian Peloponnese absolutely must rectify in the near future, especially as the rest of Noverra seems to be entering into a state of chaos. We appreciate the aid of friends in our mutual defense, but we would appreciate the ability to defend ourselves even more.” |

She thought of this very carefully, wondering if she should allow the Achaians to learn the military secrets that have protected her nation for many years. After a few moments of silence, the Prime Minister spoke to the two delegates. "I believe that your nations intentions are very clear and sincere, but we would not be able to allow your soldiers to join our ranks in the Imperial Army and Air Force. But, we would like to invite some of your naval officers and sailers to observe the tactics of our navy. The Imperial Navy is probably the most technologically advanced one in the world, and most of the ships that we would be trading with your navy will equip some of this technology. Furthermore, we would give your sailers free training and experience. I hope this is a good counter-offer." |

Ambassador Patmos grinned and made a mental note to tell the anax that he would never have a better friend than the government of Brasilia. “Perhaps the generals will be unhappy with me,” he said, “but as far as I and the government as a whole are concerned, your counteroffer might as well be a gift to us. Achaian Peloponnese is, on the whole, a naval nation, and it is on the seas that we intend to meet any aggressor to prevent them from ever reaching the Peloponnese itself. You provide a great boon to us by allowing our naval personnel to observe your naval exercises, which will certainly lead to better protections of Achaian Peloponnese and all of her people.” Patmos leaned forward. “With all this in mind, I am certain that we can provide something to the government of Brasilia in turn.” |

"I believe that the gift of friendship is the best one you can give our nation. Maybe in the future you can thank us in some way, but now we are very content. I would like to propose one more thing before we end our talks, but it has seemed to pass my mind..." The Prime Minister thought for a while, trying to figure out what it was thinking. Suddenly, the idea came back into her mind. "I was thinking that mage our nation can hold some sort of press conference or real ease a statement announcing our friendship. What do you think?" |

Patmos nodded. “If we are going to tie our nations together in this way, making it public will definitely serve both of our interests. It will certainly cut down on future confusion between our nations and any others.” The ambassador got to his feet and moved to his desk, reaching for his supply of stationery. Fetching a sheet and a pen, he quickly returned to the table and said, “Achaian Peloponnese would be happy to announce its friendship with the Empire of Brasilia. I am not certain that we need to disclose everything that we have agreed to during our talks today, but perhaps some statement about developing serious economic and military ties would be appropriate, in order to explain that this friendship is more than flattering language between us. Do you agree?” |

"I agree with you 100 percent. It has been an honor speaking with you two and I hope that our nations new friendship will last a very long time. God Bless you both." The Prime Minister then shook hands with the two Achaians and told them goodbye. |

The ambassador and the basileus rose to shake the prime minister’s hand. Agora spoke before Patmos could: “It has certainly been a pleasure speaking with you today.” Patmos nodded in agreement. “We are grateful for your visit, and we certainly look forward to doing business with you in the future. On our end, we will release a public statement of friendship with the Empire of Brasilia in the coming days. We are extremely happy that we have concluded these agreements as quickly and as productively as we succeeded in doing today.” The ambassador escorted Prime Minister Roussef out of his office and through the Megaron’s entrance hall, where Achaian military officers waited with the diplomatic car that would take the prime minister back to the airport. |
