"Yes, Your Excellency," responded Alba to the Achaean diplomat, "I am saying that exactly. And he merely offered one explanation, that I was not being clear enough. Perhaps it needed to be broken down in a more simpler vernacular for comprehension, this I do not know." 'Ells segurament han patit des de la independència, (They certainly have suffered since independence)' she thought to herself, as she paused for a second, opening her folder with notes she had taken in Medai. "I would reconsider that assurance; like I said, he was steadfast in his position of not accepting, even if we'd offered everything we hold near and dear. If God himself came and negotiated with Freeland, he would still fly in the face of true negotiations and not accept anything offered. We--I had offered with no strings attached, no frills whatsoever. But again, nonsense upon nonsense." She looks down at her notes. "Is it not true that Freeland himself said, and I quote directly, 'If Charles was still around I would want something from him!' and 'I didn't expect you to make any offers that I'd agree with,' hm?" She stares at the Medaian ambassador for a moment, averting her eyes to move on. And to you," referring to the Valkanian delegation, "yes, I defiantly was just doing so. But excuse me since I was taking care of domestic issues back home, we're not in a bubble here. And you know what? Concern yourself with your own nation, seeing as that it's become a s-" Antonio quickly interrupted her, before she said something unforgivable, at least in the diplomatic sense. True that Alba broke diplomatic code, however, she was in her right to do so, at least to Antonio. "Your Excellency, I respectfully ask that you please leave that matter to us. It may seem to you that it is as easy as decreeing so, however, there are provisions that must be established, laws that must be followed, foremost Primary Law. Who's to say that your government would go and capture Ranya for yourself, after releasing them? There is a reason that they haven't been released, however, I do assure you that it will be done. Mark my words." |

Delos frowned. “Minister Suero, without context, those statements sound entirely reasonable to me,” he said. “Given the evidence, President Freeland has no reason not to consider Dawinia to be hostile. He would expect that any Dawinian diplomat sent to treat with him would do so in bad faith. My anax would make the same assumption. Did Dawinia provide any reason to think differently?” |

OOC: This meeting is taking place before my regime change XD Space vortex-paradox! "Perhaps that is so Your Imperial Majesty. Also please remind Your Imperial Majesty's diplomatic stuff to use proper titles when addressing foreign nobility, like we are doing. I trust that until we have the reassurance of the Federal Republic of Medai we cannot be sure. While I truly trust Your Imperial Majesty and all Dawinian diplomats present, protocol is there for a reason, and I have a duty to follow it." replied the Prime Minister; |

Alba figured she should have continued. At least she came prepared, documenting as much as she could from the meeting. She quickly flips to pages towards the middle of the stack. "Yes, we did," she started, "we came with the most benevolent intentions, this I assure you. I had offered, quote, 'more cooperation between our governments,' 'help bolster your nation's defences,' 'a simple alliance is the only thing we would want from the conclusion of this meeting,' and that alliance would be a one-way alliance, in which we would obligate ourselves to aid in their conflicts and not obligate Medai to do the opposite in ours." Alba closes her eyes and sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. "And to further prove our true intentions, I had even came with the message, straight from Emperor Antonio, 'Emperor Antonio has conceded he has erred and sees the flaws and implications his, pardon my language, as this is a direct quote, 'stupid mistakes' have caused.'" "And, might I add," interjected Antonio, "It is not within any of present or future plans to harm a nation that has had historical links to us; it is truly against our prerogative and established laws in my empire." |

Ambassador Delos considered Minister Suero’s words for a moment before sighing. Ignoring the statements of the Valkanian prime minister—considering the Dawinians’ words, attempting to silence them before the truth had been ascertained would only lead to more uncertainty—and ignoring the sinking feeling in his stomach, Delos said, “I find it very difficult to believe that President Freeland simply rejected diplomatic offerings of this kind out of hand, Minister Suero. If I may ask, what did the president really say?” |

Alba disregarded the Valkanian Prime Minister, as she began feeling like her word was not enough, as she would have no reason to lie. She did come directly from Medai to Legantus, following the meeting, but apparently, that wasn't enough. She flipped back to the near beginning of her folder. She began, now paraphrasing, as she couldn't take account word-for-word of what was said. "When I had offered to 'help bolster your nation's defences', he had simply responded, 'what do you mean,' to which I had further elaborated and also added the offer of further cooperation between our [Dawinia and Medai] governments, he had responded 'the alliance you wish for is not possible...although we wish to have friendly relations with you." She flips another page, repositioning her seating style. "And when I had even went as far as to offer this one-way alliance, in the end I was told, and I quote directly, 'Since [sic] you still have yet to tell me what's going to be expected of us, I will not accept your so-called 'alliance.' Good day.' And that was that. The end of the meeting. And this was right after he was yelling about Dawinia's sovereign right to engage in military exercises, in their own territory, and territory that was granted access into." |

"Seems perfectly normal to me. I do not udnerstand what your problem is. He didn't want an alliance with a militarist nation on the other side of the Reval Ocean that only a couple of months ago was engaged in all out war. An allaince such as this one would only serve to bind them into your sphere of influence and drag them into your wars as I previously mentioned. Please stop trying to somehow 'expose' Medai, because you're only making a fool of yourself, and in His Imperial Majesty's presence nontheless. Until the Medaian delegation confirms any of your claims they're as good as fairy tales to all of us. Now unless both Delegations have anything productive to add it would be in the best interest of this Union to halt this conversation lest we see another member, or two leave so soon." the Prime Minister turned to the Secretary General; "Do you not agree Your Excellency?" Delos frowned as he thought of the implications of the Dawinian accusation. The problem was not necessarily that President Freeland had considered Dawinia his enemy; indeed, that was to be expected. But if he had thrown away an offer of friendship in such a provocative way that he might as well have been calling war down on his nation—and on the few Achaian forces that the anax could spare to help defend it… Well, one thing was clear from the very beginning. Delos turned to the Valkanian delegate and asked, “Does the Empire of Valkany have a horse in this race? Because I can assure you that Achaian Peloponnese does. I intend to see the end of this conversation one way or the other, so that my report to my anax will be as complete as possible.” The ambassador turned again to the Median foreign minister. “Minister Hendricks, these are damning charges,” he said. “Anax Kerameikos cannot be asked to defend a nation that seeks out, rather than avoids, conflict with other nations. Our nations agreed together to stand neutral and apart from the factionalism that has taken over Noverra, so that those factions would have no reason to seek our destruction. We did not sign the Neutrality Pact together in order to antagonize the rest of the world.” The ambassador’s expression became more pleading. “Minister, please tell me that President Freeland would not have done such a thing.” |

The Valkanian Ambassador to the Union of Natios tried to speak once more but was interrupted and held back by the Prime Minister. "Let them go on. It will either cause Achain Peloponnese to get pissed off at Dawinia and come to our side or break their treaty with Medai and force Medai to come to our side. In any case we piss off the neutrals with our enemies and force them on our side." "Understood Sir. Let's pretend we lost our interest here, to 'calm things down'." |

Ambassador Delos considered the silence of Minister Hendricks for a long moment, before turning to the chamber as a whole. “I apologize for my outburst,” he said. “I shall return.” Giving a nod to both the Median and the Dawinian delegations, Delos turned to the door and strode out of the room, pulling his telephone from his pocket again as he did so. Cursing the lack of reception in the Paceum Complex, Delos didn’t stop until he was completely outside the building before dialing and putting the telephone to his ear. “Basileus Kifisia, madam,” he began, “please let me speak to the anax. I have news regarding Median relations with Dawinia.” Kifisia didn’t bother to respond; Delos heard a click before the anax’s voice came through from the other end. “Ambassador, what is your news?” “Sir, Dawinia’s foreign minister has publicly accused Medai’s President Freeland of insulting her and Dawinia as a whole during their most recent diplomatic exchange,” Delos said. “Medai’s Minister Hendricks here has said nothing since the accusation; I do not believe that she knows the facts of the matter herself, but nonetheless…” “What are the details of this discussion, as you understand them?” Kerameikos asked. Delos sighed. “According to the Dawinians—and I have no other words to go on—Foreign Minister Suero met with President Freeland earlier this morning and offered peace terms that were highly favorable to Medai. Minister Suero claimed to offer Dawinian technology and training, trade agreements, and promises to aid Medai in any conflict it should enter without asking for a reciprocal agreement from President Freeland. Rather than consider such an agreement, President Freeland rejected it out of hand.” “That is his prerogative,” Kerameikos reminded his diplomat. “Yes, sir,” Delos agreed. “However, again according to Suero, President Freeland became verbally aggressive—actually shouted at her, she said. She claims insult against Medai.” The ambassador heard his anax grind his teeth together on the other end of the line. “You say that Minister Hendricks has said nothing to defend her nation?” he asked. “She said nothing.” “And what are the chances for war occurring because of this?” Delos considered the question for a long while. “Minister Suero quoted herself during her meeting with President Freeland, where she supposedly claimed that Emperor Antonio had admitted to making a mistake in threatening Medai in the first place; this was, according to the minister, the purpose behind her meeting with Freeland, and the reason for Dawinia’s good terms. With that in mind, Dawinia will likely not pursue this insult to its final conclusion—certainly not while Gilead looms overhead. I believe that the risk of war coming to Medai is minimal at the moment.” “But without a filter on his mouth, Freeland will quickly drag his nation into a war with someone else if he isn’t careful.” Kerameikos sighed. “Find out what you can. If Hendricks says anything to you before the end of the meeting, I want to know about it. If she is as ignorant as you claim, I want you to ask her to contact President Freeland and determine the truth of the matter. If she says nothing, either to defend herself or otherwise…” The anax sighed again. “Again, let me know,” he said. “I will determine the best course of action as more information becomes clear.” “Of course, sir,” Ambassador Delos said. The phone clicked on the other end of the line, and the ambassador snapped it shut and put it back into his jacket pocket as he turned back toward the doors of the Paceum Complex and walked back to the meeting chamber. |

[OOC: Greg has been kind enough to hand over control of his Gileadan secretary general, Leonard Cohen, for the sake of moving this thread along. Greg retains control over Prince Gregory, who acts as a representative of Gilead.] Secretary General Cohen glared. “Honorable delegates!” he snapped. “Your Majesty,” he said, turning to Emperor Antonio, “please control your diplomat. I will not abide outbursts in this chamber. Any complaints you have with your fellow delegates can be addressed in the appropriate manner.” The secretary general turned his attention toward the Achaian delegate, who was trying to sneak back into the meeting unobserved. “You have no voice at this meeting, Ambassador,” Cohen growled. “Your nation has accepted observer status. At a later date you may sign the Union Charter and stand for a vote of your full membership, but until that time you will watch the proceedings here silently!” The secretary general eyed the squabbling delegates for a moment longer before turning his attention to the Valkanian delegation. “Prime Minister, Ambassador, thank you for attempting to calm these tensions,” he said. “In future, though, please allow the proper authority to take care of these issues.” Cohen blatantly ignored the fact that he, the ‘proper authority,’ had delayed his response for much longer than he should have, and had in fact ignored Valkany’s invitation to intervene; his mind had been elsewhere, sadly. “We have a vote on the floor to suspend the membership of Melzae from the Union of Nations,” he said, “and the votes are currently as follows: five votes to suspend, four votes to retain. I ask for any final votes at this time.” |

(OOC: Sorry about the delay in posting, I was on a vacation for 4 days. Otherwise I would've said something sooner.) Minister Hendricks simply sat there the entire time waiting for a chance to speak up. By the time she got it, everyone appeared ready to move on. However, she spoke up, feeling obligated to defend herself and her nation. "I'm not sure exactly what went on during that meeting. I wasn't there. If the President was yelling, he didn't have any intention of insulting anyone. He's just the kind of person who yells when he gets stressed out. That's how he handles it, how he always has, and probably always will. Because of this, I personally don't approve of him meeting with diplomats. He felt like it was important to meet with Minister Suero personally. "As for his refusal to be involved in said alliance, he probably didn't want anything to happen between the two of us right now. He likely wanted to simply leave things alone for a while so that there would be time for tensions to cool down. When he said he desired friendly relations, he meant in the future. In addition, he was probably worried you'd use whatever you offered us to gain some kind of control over us. Like the rest of our nation, he views Dawinia as an aggressor. I'm not sure whether or not you're offer left any room to attach strings. As I said earlier, I wasn't there. Being a cynical person anyway, he probably was worried you would find a way to work one in." She paused for a moment, then said. "Note that I'm not claiming he did or didn't do anything. All of that was speculation based off of what I've been told." She turned towards Secretary General Cohen. "Now that I've said my bit, I'm ready to get back to the agenda." |

Secretary General Cohen glared at Minister Hendricks, but as the minister appeared willing to leave the matter for later, he nodded sharply and turned back to the monitor in front of him. After a moment, he looked back up at the chamber. “Enough time has elapsed for everyone to make their decisions,” he announced. “By a vote of five to four, the membership of Melzae in the Union of Nations has been suspended. Melzae will be permitted to request its reinstatement in this body at a later date, pending a review of that nation’s previous actions and the stability of its current government.” Cohen looked down at his notes, purposely avoiding any scowls that might have flashed toward him from the chamber at this news. Looking at the agenda in front of him, the secretary general barely withheld a frown as he considered how much more time the already-long meeting was going to take due to impending debates. “The Union of Nations recognizes the political changes that have come over various nations in Victorium due to the effects of the current war there,” he began. “In particular, three formerly-independent nations have been invaded and occupied by neighboring states. Currently in the chamber are representatives from the former government of New Vasconia, one of the afflicted nations. Likewise, the Union of Nations includes Austiana and Dawinia, whose actions have precipitated this unfortunate shift in policy. Prior to any vote regarding the legitimacy of the current governments of New Vasconia, Rendaria, and Chanarya, I ask the representatives of the New Vasconian government in exile to say their piece. I would also like to hear from the Dawinian and Austianese delegations directly. I open the floor to Emmanuel Kokinos, who represents the Democratic Socialist Republic of New Vasconia.” The secretary general took his seat and purposely ignored the Achaian diplomat sneaking his phone out of his jacket pocket yet again; Cohen decided to make a suggestion to his successor to ban the things before the next meeting. |

Emmanuel stood up as the chamber turned its attention toward him. Finally, he thought. "Mr. Secretary-General," he began, "nations of the UN." "Some time ago, the peaceful, sovereign nation of New Vasconia was invaded by the imperialistic government of Austiana. Thousands of our people died and our country was swallowed whole by the then-fascist republic. Our people were subjugated and oppressed, our leaders humiliated, and our beliefs belittled. Numerous humans' rights violations were carried out by the former Austianese government under Gustav Klink. "And, now, after he's dead and buried, and a kingdom installed in his place, we still have no freedom. We were proclaimed a 'principality' as King Bernhard declared his sovereignty over us and crowned himself 'Prince of New Vasconia'--a position no Vasconian would ever willingly recognise. He has done nothing to restore us to our independence, our democracy, nor our place on the world stage. On behalf of the People of New Vasconia, and the government-in-exile, I ask that this body demand that the Kingdom of Austiana relinquish its illegal conquest and allow my government, the legitimate government, to return to our country--to our home." |

The Valkanian delegates noded in agreement. They had promised New Vasconia support and Valks are the kind that keep their word. No matter what the two invaders had to say, they had no place in New Vasconia, Rendaria or Chanarya in the first place. And while Dawinia had taken steps to free the new states, though not fully freeing them either for military reasons or for a sincere care about their stability, the Austianese on the other hand kept Vasconia under an iron heel, ridiculing the proud, ancient nation and showing their 'Principality' off like a prize. That Valkany would not stand for. |
