“Further automation is possible,” Minister Pagkrati was saying, “but we would be better served building additional living space for the men who are stationed there—” A knock on Anax Kerameikos’s office door interrupted the minister’s report. Kerameikos glanced up. “Yes?” he called. Minister Peiraias opened the door and stepped into the office, followed by Basileus Kypseli; the latter held yet another sheet of paper in his hand, and Kerameikos wondered just what kind of news he was about to receive. “Sir,” Peiraias began, “Basileus Kypseli tells me that there has been an increase of signal traffic to the north. They appear to be official government communications.” Kypseli, standing beside the minister, nodded in support. Kerameikos narrowed his eyes. “Ramadanhir?” he asked. “We haven’t heard news regarding that nation for some time…” “No, sir,” Peiraias replied. “The communications originate from the islands south of Magourius. There is very little useful information to glean from them, but we do at least know that this nation answers to the name”—the minister glanced over at the paper in Kypseli’s hand—“‘Republic of Unimutani.’ They have either recently organized, or have only recently revealed themselves to the world.” “This has been happening with disturbing regularity lately,” Kerameikos murmured, looking at the map on his office wall. “And yet again, a nation appears almost within sight of Achaian Peloponnese. At least this time we have nothing to suggest that they will be an immediate threat.” The anax glared again, briefly, at the nation beside his own, before turning his attention to the islands that Peiraias had mentioned. “We have been looking for allies in the northern Ramadan Gulf since revealing ourselves to the rest of Noverra, but somehow we have only managed one attempt at negotiation, which failed. This…” The anax glanced up questioningly at the minister, who glanced over at Kypseli. “Unimutani, sir,” the basileus said. “This Unimutani,” Kerameikos continued, “provides us with another opportunity for local trade, as well as another potential ally who has no stake in the current war, and no desire to join in.” For what seems like the hundredth time, the anax pulled a sheet of stationery from the top of his apparently-never-ending stack and took up his pen again. “Kypseli, this message is to go to the Republic of Unimutani, as soon as you can determine who is authorized to speak for them.” “Yes, sir,” the basileus said, as Kerameikos wrote out his invitation.

![]() "Are you sure about this?" "Of course I'm sure!" "You don't' think we'll regret it?" "Why would we?" "It's been to long. It's about time we make ourselves known." "Do you think the world is ready?" "We haven't exactly been invisible now have we?" "True, but isolation has kept us safe for so long." "Too long." The Unimutani Republic Republic Hall, Udio City Prime Minister Asidi sat behind his desk, conversing in French with his Minister of Energy and Minister of Health. The topic of the day was the country's few remaining coal fired energy plants, whose chemical belching smokestacks were a thorn in Unimutani's environmental side. In response to the issue, the Asidi administration was considering several alternatives. Thermal Energy, Hydroelectric Energy, Wind & Solar Plants, and Nuclear Energy were the most likely choices, though the latter was unlikely due to the possibility of provoking an unfavored response from the people, who were determined to keep any more nuclear material out of Unimutani. There was a heavy knock on the door, and the conversation halted for a moment. Asidi granted permission for entry, and the Foreign Affairs Minister walked in, clutching a packet of news bulletins. His curious entry and obviously serious demeanor piqued Asidi's interest, and he motioned for the man to explain. “Prime Minister, I believe I have a topic of interest for you. It concerns the Achaian Peloponnese. As you know, for several months now my ministry, in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance & Commerce, has been shuffling through our files on the various nations of the world, trying to assemble a modern factbook.” He said, his French flawless unlike his counterparts, whose French bore strong traces of the Unimutani dialect. Prime Minister Buko nodded, aware of the joint research effort between the Ministries. He had expressed concern on a particular issue, and the project had been created to find an answer. "We were waiting to propose this until next week, but it seems fate had other ideas. Their leader Anax Kerameikos has reached out to us. He's offered to discuss relations with us and inquired about a visit to their capital." "It's no great secret that if we open ourselves to the world, we will need friends." Continued Tibiki, "Such is the way these things go. However, our sources indicate that the Achaian Peloponnese is one of the furthest things from a democracy. They are by far, however, the most active nation close to our borders, so it would not do us any good to insult them." Buko paused thoughtfully, considering Foreign Minister Tibiki's words. A new trade partner would be great, and the possible deals would allow him to combat the strength and influence of major corporations at home. The people, of course, would be likely to object. Buko doubted that many would go for the idea of cozying up to a dictator, but the fact that an autocratic regime existed so close to their borders further underlined the urgency in the Republic's program to return to the world stage. Economic security also came into play. It was good to have partners on the international scale, with actual deals written down and ratified. Still, Buko wondered if they were being taking advantage of. Diplomatic negotiations would have to be handled cautiously, and it was likely this could blow up in his face if talks went sour. Yet, Buko had to admit it was worth a try. Besides, nations as large and powerful as the Achaian Peloponnese had their own concerns, and might even be genuinely looking for a friend. "Alright," Buko agreed. "Contact their government and express our interest." Tibiki nodded. "Right away Prime Minister." He bowed, leaving the room. Prime Minister Asidi went back to his meeting, a new issue on his mind. Ambassador Paros considered the skyline of Kerkyra from the window of Anax Anafiotika Airport and wondered if this meeting, too, would somehow go wrong. While there were higher-level members of the government that Anax Kerameikos could have sent to this meeting with Prime Minister Asidi of Unimutani—and indeed, the anax had originally wanted to send Minister Peiraias himself, to show more respect to the visiting head of state—Paros had been available after the failure of his talks with Magourius, while the volatile situation in the rest of the world had led the basileis to persuade the anax to keep Peiraias at his side for the moment. Paros could only hope that these talks went much better than those he had last attempted. Unimutani, according to the public broadcast that the Office of Observation and Communication had intercepted for his use, seemed to be among the most peaceful nations in the world—perhaps problematically so. Achaian Peloponnese was not a warlike state by any means, but it was proud of its military, which was a central part of the nation’s government and social structure. It was anyone’s guess at the moment just how the prime minister of Unimutani would react to that fact. Hopefully he would accept it for the sake of building a mutual friendship. Considering Ambassador Paros’s last assignment, it was not as though nations much alike were necessarily going to agree, either. The ambassador turned his attention away from the skyline and toward the sky itself. The delegation would likely arrive sooner rather than later. He would need to be prepared to meet with them.
