Anax Kerameikos glanced up as Basileus Kypseli from the Office of Observation and Communication entered his office. “Good news or bad?” the anax demanded, reaching out for the document in Kypseli’s hand. The basileus shook his head and handed the anax his message. “Neither, sir,” he said. “Just… strange.” Kerameikos took the paper in his hand and looked at the prominent coat of arms. He raised an eyebrow. “I assume there is a reason that you didn’t simply throw this letter into the nearest fire,” he said. Basileus Kypseli nodded to the paper. “Achaian standing policy refuses to enter discussions with the Empire of Valkany due to former insults,” he said. “It appears that someone alerted the Valkanians themselves to that.” “So it seems,” agreed the anax as he finished reading. He laid the letter down on his desk for a long moment as he considered the issue. “Please send for Minister Peiraias and Basileus Kifisia, Kypseli. It seems that we will need to readjust our diplomatic stance toward Valkany, if only to find out why they seem so… I think it is not inaccurate to say ‘desperate,’ in this case, to reclaim our favor.” Basileus Kypseli quickly nodded as Kerameikos turned toward his stack of stationery and wrote out a reply. The basileus returned after a few moments with the Minister of the Exterior and the Basileus of International Political Outreach, who didn’t bother to hide her curiosity. “Sir, the Valkanians actually apologized?” she asked. Kerameikos glanced up from his reply. “In a rather spectacular way, according to their crown prince.” The anax motioned for the basileus to take the message and read it herself; considering that she had been personally insulted by the Valkanian diplomat, he felt that she had that right. Minister Peiraias read the message over the basileus’s shoulder. “I assume that this is in response to the matter in Konigmark?” he asked. “I have to assume so,” Kerameikos said. “Ambassador Rodos reported that Crown Prince Andrew already intended to apologize to us prior to that date, but considering that he had had plenty of time to do such a thing before his father’s abdication and neither he nor his father chose to bother… I tend to believe that Valkany was not aware of the seriousness of their breach until it was brought to their diplomat’s attention.” Basileus Kifisia shook her head as she passed the message on to the minister. “Valkany is clearly yearning for support in its moments of weakness. Two regime changes, a foreign war in the midst of economic troubles, and a spate of building and wasteful spending by the outgoing government… I can only imagine the troubles that such a nation is currently experiencing. Prince Andrew must be well aware of his vulnerability.” “That is true enough,” the anax agreed. “And the drastic measures to which Prince Andrew has resorted in order to persuade us of his sincerity only understate the vulnerability of his nation. Nonetheless, Achaian Peloponnese has its own issues to deal with.” He handed his completed reply to Basileus Kypseli. “Send this in response to Prince Andrew, please. Achaian Peloponnese will no longer reject Valkanian communication entirely, but we are not about to make any firm friendships with a nation whose leaders cannot lead, and whose people cannot be ruled.” Kerameikos glanced at the map on the wall of his office. “Let Valkany come to us if Prince Andrew so desires, but we have no reason to seek him out.”
