T.A.N.G. - Acadia

The Gileadan representatives to the Trade Association of North Gilead (T.A.N.G.) as well as the Unified Trade Zone met among themselves to discuss whether or not to finally invite Acadia to the organization. Steven Sharp, the Minister of Commerce and Head of the UTZ, was present.

Minister Sharp was a proponent of the invitation, but TANG was worried that bringing Acadia closer to Gilead's sphere of influence would antagonize Auvernia and its allies new and old. When the President of TANG, Jeffery McDonald, brought up this issue, Sharp's serious persona gave way to a brief laugh as he placed his note-taking pen down.

The Minister, through his modern designed spectacles, softly peered at the man and responded as follows, "His Majesty has made it clear, and I completely agree with him, that Victorium should and never will deter Gilead from going forward with its ventures. This is not two centuries ago when they dictated our every move," he began to address the entire audience, "Do not forgot our place as the foremost of powers on Noverra, for if we falter, others will surely seize the opportunity."

Many of those present had felt that Gilead had been faltering for a while with the King in reclusion and the Ministers acting on their own agendas.

Almost sensing their thoughts, the Minister then stated, "Our King has returned to his post. Everyone gets lost sometimes, but that's when they need support the most. Now, I do have other matters to attend to. I hope that you, Mr. President of the TANG will make the right decision in the matter."

The Gileadan TANG representative and the UTZ continued their talks, but most of them had already been moved by the Minister's words either by fear of working against him or respect for his leadership. The only real issue at hand was convincing the other nations of TANG to agree, but they would handle that if and only if Acadia would agree with the invitation.

Nouvelle Arres was a large city, the largest one under the flag of the Auvernian Commonweath. It was the first settlement the Acadia Company, which settled in the area in the 1503. From there, the city sprawled outwards from the bay that was its womb, a troubled bloom to a city of 10 million, a fourth of the nation's population. The Stadtholder of the Republic was a position occupied by Vallenders. They oversaw the construction of shipyards, and maintained various Auvernian architects - the old town was designed on a Cartesian grid. At the center of the city, the parade ground was home to the main city buildings: the Government House, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory, The Archbishop's Palace, Dominion House, and the City Hall.

While the city moved through the motions of its daily life, Michel van Bronkhorst read the Gileadian letter to his superior, The Stadtholder, and his peers, the Consuls Alba Auerbach, Casper Southwell, and Julia Layton. Michel ran trough the letter quickly, and placed the letter slowly on the table as he finished reading. Esdras looked out of the windows of the Stadtholder's Chambers. "After centuries of co-existing, they finally offered a hand in friendship." Esdras turned around and sat in his big chair. "It seems so," said Alba Auerbach. "Such a free trade agreement would be beneficial to the Commonwealth. We've purchased grain and other crops from Gilead since they expanded into the center of the continent many years ago. Tariffs have proved difficult for us and Auvernia to pay. If we summit the Commonwealth into this Trade Union, we would freed of such tariffs, and we could see some more cash in our coffers as a result."

Casper, sitting on the chair closest to Esdras said, "It is quite unusual. They would lose money when they lose the tariffs on us." Alba soon quipped, "Or we could use that money we save on foodstuffs and more, and sell it to say, Victorium. That League of Crowns summit is going on. The King told us that his men would return with a powerful trade union in Victorium. We could exploit that opening to our benefit!"

RESPUBLICA ACADIAE

Esteemed Sir,

We are pleased that your trade organization has given us permission to join you. Our nation has existed largely as a major trade port for the Auvernian Commonwealth, and a major center for various shipbuilding corporations in the region. In addition, various Gileadian goods enter our nation from the rail links in the west, and are sent to
Victorium.

In terms of actually of setting a meeting, we are completely free to meet in Nouvelle Arres.

Stadtholder of the Acadian Republic

President McDonald of T.A.N.G. agreed to meet the Acadian government in Nouvelle Arres to discuss their possible entry into the organization. Before his arrival, he held another meeting with the UTZ and the Gileadan Commerce Ministry and walked away with an understanding that he did not represent T.A.N.G. solely, nor did he have permission to speak for the King of Gilead. A fine balance was laid out and anything different could result in an abrupt end to his career.

Nouvelle Arres

After his short plane trip to the Acadia' capital city, McDonald took it upon his self to to make notes concerning the infrastructure, then he began calculating random estimates on various things such as the necessary workforce, etc for upgrading the major Acadian highway system and connecting it to the Gileadan and Medaian ones.

Eventually he made his way to the meeting location.

The Chamberlain met the President at the entrance of the Throne Room. The Throne was used by the King when he opened the Senate and swore in the Consuls, but its true purpose was for the former Viceroys of Acadia, who used the throne room originally. The Chamberlain greeted the president, and turned to the door. He struck the floor with a staff, which let the guards know that the doors needed to be opened.

The doors creaked open, and the duo made their way in. There was a hallway, which lead to the Throne Room. Guards lined the sides of the hall, watching over the procession. The Chamberlain struck the floor again, which opened the Throne Room doors.

The Stadtholder and his consuls stood there, ready to greet the president.

President McDonald thanked the Chamberlain then promptly entered the throne room to meet the Stadtholder and his consuls with a slight bow.

"I thank you for having granted this audience, your Excellencies," he began, "May we begin?"

"Certainly.", said the stadtholder said. He led him a side room, and the consuls followed. It was a room adorned in baroque filigree and with portraits. Ezra sat at the head of the table, with the consuls seated to the left or right of him and the president with at the other end. Behind the president, there was a portrait of Louis XVIII, that stared Ezra right in the face. His great-great-grandfather stared at him, alongside numerous viceroys and Stadtholders. They sat, poised and ready for the Judgement of Ezra Cortes.

"So, Mr. President, where would you like to start?"

Entering the room, the President couldn't help but draw a stark comparison for the how both Gilead and Acadia took care in memorializing its previous leaders across various government systems in its halls and rooms of power. Then again, he thought, all nations probably do just that in order to forge a connection with their pasts.

Hearing the Stadtholder's question, McDonald briefly smiled as he began to answer.

"Well, Your Excellency, the Trade Association of North Gileada has excluded Acadia for over the past decade of its existence, as you know. Our reasoning has been, until recently, that the Kingdom of Auvernia would stand objective to any such formal cooperation between Acadia and an entity with heavy influence from Gilead itself. Yet, we recognize now the ignorance in underestimating the autonomy of your republic and desire to move forward. As a first and monumental step, I would like to see the addition of Acadia to the organization so that the bountiful profits of free trade may be enjoyed across the entirety of North Gilead. Not only would this be written on paper, but the organization would work with all member-states to fun an upgrade to the Acadian highway system to support the expected influx of industrial traffic. A good start, if any, in my opinion."

Ezra was confuzzled. Auvernia standing in the way? The Kingdom would have been glad to let such a trade union exist. Nonetheless, Ezra retorted, "I openly accept such a motion. However I should say that such a highway system would be unpropitious. Our highways are well maintained, and are built in the Auvernian manner. The reputation of the Auvernian civil planners, engineers, and architects are known around the world for their excellence. Hence, their output would be of equal quality. However, I do suggest that we rehabilitate the Acadian Rail Corridor. We receive most of your goods from that rail corridor. It is not our national interest to upgrade the highways, as they are already on par with your highways."

The President laughed internally at the notion that Acadia's highways system could measure to that of Gilead's, but he wasn't about to seep animosity into the conversation. Rather, he accepted the new proposal.

"Ah, then forgive my ignorance on the matter. At any rate, assisting in this, er, rehabilitation would be of great interest to the organization just as well. Furthermore, I do wish to reiterate that no...agreement...made here today will not be immediately binding. I represent myself as President of the T.A.N.G. at this time. However, I will bring whatever final terms we come up with today to the organization's decision making body for analysis and advisement. Nevertheless, I can say that the vast majority of those with a say in the matter are in favor of the addition of Acadia. "

Ezra was confused again. "I'm sorry, if you do not possess at least some control of this organization, who does? I'd like to see your 'decision-making body' in action, if you don't mind. I'd like to meet these people."

McDonald's brows lifted in silent frustration.

"Of course, mine is the final voice in decisions made for the organization; however, I am not at liberty to simply add member-states at my discretion or task great amounts of funds in my interest. As President, I am the head of the North Gileadan Trade Commission and there must be a majority of votes in the commission before I can approve any agreement we can come to here today. Then, the appropriate formalities would be carried out per usual."

He felt just a tad offended at the question he was asked, but positivity was his friend in the moment, or so that's what he told himself.

Alba was confused, perhaps not as much as Ezra. She made a forthright statement, "Sir, you have mentioned the Trade Association, and now you have brought forth a Trade Comission. Is this Trade Comission your deliberative body?"

Casper soon joined Alba as well. "I think I speak for all the consuls here when I say all of us would like to join your trade group. Even the king himself would like this to happen. However, I cannot understand why only you have come. Where are the other members? Why are you here? This meeting, up until now has been fruitless, as nothing would come of it, because it is all tentative".

He nodded his head respectfully and responded.

"The Commission is the supervising authority of the Association, managing membership, etc. Now, I do believe that when I initially proposed all of this to the Stadtholder, I informed him that this meeting was to be informal in respect to the fact I am but one part of the T.A.N.G. decision making process. However, rest assured that I have had the majority of my proposals accepted by the Commission and ratified by all states. This is why I am confident to meet you all here without the attendance of the rest of the Commission. I'd rather not pull them away from their other work if not necessary. Whatever agreement we come to here today should be expected to be accepted by the Commission shortly afterwords given reason."

He was ready to move away from what he considered a challenge to his influence as President of the Commission, though the Acadians seemed genuine in their questioning.

"Your Excellencies have expressed the desire for aid in upgrading, or 'rehabilitating' your rail system for increased trade capacity. I'm sure this would especially go by well with Gilead because rail has been its primary focus as for as transportation goes since 2005 when the 7.1 earthquake struck the central provinces and left so many in disarray. Now, our rail systems tower above all, and we would like our neighbors to share in that to a mutual benefit."

'More tentative nonsense.', thought Ezra."Yes, the rail corridor is need of extra tracks to handle the increased traffic. Our other lines, predominately commuter based do not need such 'upgrades', as you call them.", said Ezra. He smiled, and said "Your Excellency, I thank for coming here and presenting your ideas to us." . He was not amused with the presentation of the president. But he would let him play this out. "If we are admitted, do we have a final say on the matter?"

The President was glad to have things move on.

"Why, of course," he explained, even though he didn't feel he should have the need to, "The Republic's decision, in whatever process is due, will be respected. If you decide it is against your interests to join, the Commission and I will respectfully acknowledge that. On the other hand, if you find that it would indeed be in your interests to join, which I am confident it is, it rests with the Commission to decide whether or not your are added to the Association, which, and excuse me for forgetting to add this, would give you full membership and representation in the Commission equal to all other member-states.
