The League of Castratene Summit: Day II

Antonío makes his way into the meeting room again, just as before the day before. His head was pounding, not so intense, but enough to warrant him to take anti-headache pills anyway. Perhaps he shouldn't had stayed out so late the night before. He sits down in his assigned seat, now just looking around the room; empty. Seems he was either very early or everyone else is very late.

His suit crimples as he leans forward and places his head on the table, atop his folded arms, just to 'rest his eyes', until some time would pass. It was a finely-made and tailored suit; high-collared and black in colour, with a white shirt, lightly trimmed with golden thread, intertwined with red threading. Although he did not choose to wear his crown to this summit, he opted to wear the collared-insignia and pinned livery badge of the two highest - and most important - orders of Dawinia, the Orden del Toisón de Oro (Order of The Golden Fleece) and Orden del Sagrado Corazón de Dawínia (Order of The Sacred Heart of Dawinia).

A few minutes later, he hears murmurs coming from the corridor, promoting him to sit up and fix himself, back to a more presentable manner. The voices come closer and closer, and eventually in comes Fernando and Bernhard, engaged in a great discussion. Upon seeing Antonío already seated, they cease their discussion.

"I'll be sure to tell him after the closing today," said Fernando, as he takes his seat; Bernhard just nods.

"Good Morning, gentlemen; I hope your nights were grand," said Antonío, turning back and forth to the two, suspiciously.

"I'll tell you later," started Fernando, "It's--"

More of the League's members entered the room, interrupting his responses. He'd have to wait to see what the commotion was about.

Lefkada sipped at the bottle of water in her hand as she walked through the Austianese palace toward the meeting room. Beside her, Colonel Oileus, who was acting as her aide for this second day, looked over at her in some worry. “How is your head, Ambassador?”

“It will survive for this meeting,” she said shortly. “As long as we don’t begin shouting, I will have no trouble.”

Oileus nodded as he and the ambassador reached the conference room. Nodding at the Austianese king and the Dawinian royals already present, the two Achaians took their seats from the day before. Lefkada immediately leaned back and rested her eyes, praying to Makaria that the meeting proved interesting enough to keep her awake.

Louis woke up from his sleep in a good mood. He came into the conference, quite pleased with himself. Paul was the chosen lackey for today's procedures. He carried Auvernian documents in a folder, although he might not need much for today's procedure.

Louis saw Lefkada sitting down, and he took the opportunity to tell her 'Good morning'. He nodded as he left her, and then came up to Antonio and Bernhard, and said good morning to them as well. He sat with Paul, awaiting the discussion to begin.

Cathair stepped into the conference room, a young man in a green cloak following at his heels. Noticing that not everyone had arrived yet he moved to his seat, nodding a greeting to the Dawinians beside him and sat down and waited for the meeting to continue.

Andrew came into the room, taking a seat next to the representatives from Itius as in the previous meeting, hoping that perhaps somebody like the Izalithian representative might sit next. It was always more fun to sit next to people who spoke only when needed. He greeted the ones already present in the room.

The two Izalithian representatives followed the Valkany delegation by a few minutes. Miorill made the effort to greet everyone politely.
Telvan didn't bother because she couldn't remember anyone's names. She was literally here to add a sense of Izalith's keen interest in mutual interactions present. She hoped Konigmark might finally speak up or a nation might bring up something of particular interest to her. If not she would be issued the cruel fate of listening to politicians natter on.
Her objective was to secure the trade network, she would facilitate that. Everything else was irrelevant. Maybe that's why she was actually sent?

Seeing that all have made it back here, this morning, Antonío clears his throat, beginning to address the room.

"I bid you all a good morning; glad to see that everyone has made it back here without any let or hinderance."

He pauses for a moment, not a second had passed without a pulsation of dull pain/discomfort.

"Without further ado, let us continue the second part of this esteemed League. If I do recall correctly from yesterday, we recessed before we can discuss militaristic ideas/plans/etc. I yield the floor to whomever would like to start us off today."

Lefkada sighed. This would not be an easy discussion, based on the previous day’s disagreements. “If I may ask a question to clarify,” she began, “are we discussing mutual defense treaties, military cooperation, or simply a general defense of the region?” The ambassador shrugged. “There is so much that could fall under the category of ‘military plans.’”

Antonío starts to think for a moment; she's right, the topic is quite vast, making it a minor challenge to where to even begin.

"I would, hm...we can start with the defense of the continental region, to which we may chime in with how we wish to contribute to it. Multilateral defense treaties, cooperation, and more; I hope that we'd be able to venture all venues that will help bolster and secure the region."

“Continental defense,” mused Lefkada softly. She glanced at Colonel Oileus for a moment before turning back to the gathered delegates. “Obviously Achaian Peloponnese is most worried about the undue influence of distant nations whose interests do not align with our own. Gilead’s unwanted eyes are the first example, and any ally that Gilead has in the world must be viewed with some level of suspicion, either as a puppet or as a willing proponent of this kind of action. But… despite debating the worst-case scenario yesterday, I remain hopeful that Gilead’s actions will remain a diplomatic, rather than a military, concern. We will need to prepare for Gilead and any of its friends, of course, but there are doubtless other, more pressing threats to the League and the continent. Verskana, for instance, will certainly want to bring its influence to bear on our League before Gilead has the opportunity--and Gilead is already trying, according to information I was given last night.” Lefkada refrained from glancing at Prince Louis. “We must be prepared to block these possible antagonists from threatening our alliance. Diplomatically, that simply means standing strong together. Militarily, though, the matter is not quite so simple.”

Colonel Oileus leaned forward. “Considering the closest threat first: To fight Verskana on land, we must hope that Verskana weakens itself against the unaligned nations standing between it and Austiana. We know that Rusnya is a prominent arms manufacturer, for instance, but we have less information about its active armed services. Rendaria, of course, is defended by its sovereign and feudal landlords--but having been defeated once, we must assume that it can be easily defeated again, considering that its defense will have to be organized from afar. We must assume, therefore, that any Verskanan invasion into Victorium will come via Rendaria, directly harming our members with holdings there, but also providing the quickest route and smallest obstacle between the Verskanan army and the borders of Austiana.” Oileus scowled. “Speaking as an Achaian, I can almost guarantee that my nation will be unable to support any action taking place in that territory. We are simply too far distant.”

The colonel relaxed slightly. “At sea, the matter in the east is much easier. Verskana has a single port in its western territory, Stavropol; the Verskanan fleet can only reach the open ocean after traversing the Cherwarz Sea, and thereafter the Victorium or the Ramadanhirian. While territories that lie on the Cherwarz Sea are certainly vulnerable to the Verskanan fleet regardless--and we can only assume that New Vasconia will be one of Verskana’s first objectives in any such assault,” Oileus added with a glance toward King Bernhard, “I am relatively confident that Victorium’s collective navies can restrict the Verskanan fleet to the Cherwarz Sea alone. The bottleneck between New Vasconia and Sotherus will be easy enough to defend, assuming that we are able to hold it before the Verskanans reach it.”

Colonel Oileus considered the matter for a moment. “So much for the Verskanans,” he said. “They will be difficult on land, but on sea we have a much better likelihood of matching them. Achaian Peloponnese has no other serious land-based concerns, from the east or otherwise: Our neighbors have been quiet for the most part, mainly peaceful, and not particularly threatening. Our nearest source of concern at the moment comes from Ramadanhir, simply because it controls the Sundra Canal and can restrict passage between the Cathay Ocean and the Ramadanhirian Sea if it so desires. So far, it has chosen to do no such thing; indeed, despite months of observing Ramadanhir and attempting to communicate with its government, we have seen very little activity from that quarter at all. But we have been led to understand that Ramadanhir is, or at least was, an ally of Gilead in days past. It is wise to prepare for a scenario in which Ramadanhir moves to block all shipping from the Sundra that does not align itself with Gilead and its allies.” Oileus looked over to Emperor Antonio and Prince Fernando. “Assuming that Dawinian interests in the Sundra are equal to the Megaron’s, I am confident that any attempt to restrict shipping in the Sundra will only be turned against Ramadanhir, and that by the time Gilead or its other allies arrive to press their claims on the canal, it will already be in the League’s hands.”

“As far as we can predict, the eastern approaches to Victorium by sea are reasonably secure,” Lefkada concluded. “I have some worries regarding our ability to spread our naval forces thin enough to cover both approaches and still guard the Reval Ocean in the west, of course--that must be the province of our other members, I fear. Nonetheless, assuming that our land forces are prepared for another long war in Rendaria and New Vasconia, I feel that the threat presented by our eastern neighbors, while perhaps more immediate, is not necessarily as pressing.” The ambassador scowled. “Nonetheless, we must be sure that, should Verskana attempt to compete with Gilead for our… attention, we do not find ourselves crushed between the two.”

“I wish that I could share your same hope,” started Fernando, “pertaining to Gilead, however, it seems to always be a cloak-and-dagger/sleight-of-hand routine with them. With diplomacy, we can always, most likely, count on their faux-kindness and empathy to accompany any dealings with us, more so now that we have banded together in a more formal setting.”

Fernando looks to Antonío, seeing if he were to object or interject; however none was there.

“Just as we say in Dawinia, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Your words carry with it a lot of weight, due to the fact that we might as well have targets on our nations. Gilead et al should be worrisome and not cast off as something that may just past.”

“Verskana shouldn’t really pose a threat to us,” added Antonío, “as we pose no threat to them. Out of all of us present today, two of us, Austiana and Dawinia, have already befriended, or at least sated, the Verskanans, reaching a binding treaty of non-aggression and cooperation. However, as, pardon, the two big players are removed from that equation, it leaves the rest of the League in the dark, susceptible to Verskanan influence and possible interference. Then again, the League does stand at a higher position and would supersede their NAP if they attack a member state.

He thought for a second before continuing.

“From what it seems anyway, Verskana would be more interested in warmer relations with it’s neighbours, rather than fight. There’s just too much economic stability that rests on having, at least, somewhat cordial relations with the West. Now, as you mention Colonel,” Antonío said, turning his attention to Colonel Oileus,” they would have to mount a coordinated land/air mission to achieve their goals, if war was to erupt. That single port Cherwarz Sea is susbetiaple to an easy blockade at the narrow strait that lies between the Vasconian province and State of Sotherus.”

Fernando picked up the conversation again.

“Ramadanhir...I’m glad that your bring them up, Colonel. Although they pose no direct, and immediate, threat to the League, they hold one key component that we utilize frequently, the canal. Recent history has proved that they intend no harm to us, however, just as you’ve mentioned, they were once close to whom we do have deep suspicions about, and that in itself, can raise a red flag.”

As he was talking, Antonío was thinking a mile a minute. ‘Demilitarization isn’t an option now...Continental defense is of the utmost importance...Parliament has to be brought in for the long-haul..pray for the League’s success for the future.” He interrupted his brother while he was talking.

“I just want to say that I was thinking to implement demilitarization policies, upon my arrival back to Dawinia, to try and restore my nation to its pre-fascist state, however, I do see the major importance and implications of what we, as the League, face, and with that, I will cancel that. Whether the threat comes today, next week, or next month, we must all be prepared for such an intrusion on our sovereign lands. The League’s interests are my interests, and I will see to it that we, as a member nation, can contribute to, sustain, and see the success of this organization."

'Well at last', Louis thought. 'The lion won't be declawed.' Louis took a sip of water, wishing that it was wine, but it seems that wine at 10 AM was not an Austianese custom, unlike Auvernia, where a breakfast wine was not unheard of. "That it is good to hear Your Majesty. While the canals poses great risk, I should raise the question of the North Sea. Do we have a plan should any foreign goon tries to interfere in the North Sea?" Louis stole a look at Cathair.

Even though the meeting was finely drifting into her line of work Telvan was still uninterested. It was just leader types coming up with excuses and validating each other to achieve military build up.

Miorill sat patiently and continued adding notes down concerning the trade negotiation results as that was what Izalith as a nation was much more interested in.

"In the event of a war in Victorum Izalith would be fit to begin sending some form of military assistance. That is all we can muster due to geographical constraints unless we offer salvation to a portion of land in Suran deemed unfitly governed by the UN and gain some type of beach head to aid in this however I imagine the logistics will be quite unfavorable."

OOC: Talking about white space. Need an IC reason why there is all this white space dang it. lol

“The North Sea is a very defensible area should anyone decide to interfere. Naval action against us from the Reval would be unwise with the threat of the Dawinian, Auvernian and Itusian Navies. Moving a fleet around Verskana sounds like a long route. The easiest route would be to run the large gap between Innis Tíle and Brághad Albainn”.

“As for Itius itself our navies are prepared and we have many potential sailors ready to be drafted if needed.”

Antonío looks around the room, as silence befell all present. It seems that all that was pertinent and most pressing to discuss was already mentioned, talked about, and dealt with. Before more time could pass, he speaks up, rising from his chair to address the room.

"Well, it seems that we have come to a natural close of discussion here. If I may say so, I am quite pleased on how we were able to come together with one idea and build upon that, for the sake and security of our nations. Regionalism is paramount to achieving continental security and that was demonstrated here these two days, unlike what we bore witness to on a more global scale in Legantus. However, that was then, and this is now. And we have proven that a group of nations can come together for a common cause."

"Indeed," interjected Fernando, "we can all return home knowing that we have achieved what's been tried and failed at. We are, in a way, pioneers, and that, my friends, is something that is worthy of celebration."

Fernando begins to applause on the last of his word, getting all in the room to follow suit. A few moments later, Antonío puts his hand up to quell the room.

"Now then, we may call this flagship meeting to a close and go on our way. Stay vigilant, stay strong, and stay diligent."

With that, Fernando and Antonío being to start the process of gathering their various items scattered across their area of the table, before they were to finally bid their farewells to the foreign delegations that have attended. All in all, it was a good and worth summit.
