Anax Kerameikos nodded as he reached the end of the letter. “Nice and flattering… That much hasn’t changed.” He glanced up at the various officials sitting in his office. “This will be a delicate matter. Greeting the Gileadan delegation with a simple ambassador will likely not be taken well.” Minister Pagkrati raised an eyebrow. “We’re currently at odds with stated Gileadan policy, sir,” he pointed out. “And we immediately overturned the last agreement we made with King Gregorius. Ignoring that no one here necessarily wants to be berated by a foreign power, what reasons do we have to speak with Gilead in any case now?” “We are indeed at odds with Gileadan policy,” Kerameikos said, “and our representative will be happy enough to explain that to Gregorius’s when the time comes. Nonetheless, while we have acted to express our frustration with Gilead in meaningful ways, the obvious consequence has been noticeably raised tensions between ourselves and Gilead--and no matter how we would wish it otherwise, Gilead remains a major power with several powerful friends. We are safer now than we were only weeks ago because we have friends of our own, but even with the League on our side, I have no interest in fighting a preventable war.” The anax turned to Basileus Kifisia. “This missive doesn’t tell us who will arrive on Gregorius’s behalf, though I’m willing to guess that the king himself won’t be joining us here in Kerkyra. Considering the flattering tone of the letter, as well as our last session in Gilead, prepare for someone important regardless. Even if it isn’t, I’d like Gregorius to realize that the disdain we hold for his policies and the distrust we have for his nation do not prevent us from discussing matters in as civilized an atmosphere as possible.” Kerameikos considered the matter for a moment before he added, “You will take care of this personally, Kifisia.” The basileus frowned, but she nodded regardless. “Yes, sir.” Kerameikos took another sheet of stationery from the stack on his desk and fetched a pen. “You know where this goes, Kypseli,” he said without looking up as he began to write.

Perched over the mountain of clouds above them, the Deputy Ministers of both Commerce and Foreign affairs flew across the fluid airs surmounting the Reval below. Pretty soon they'd fly over the Victorium and Ramadanhiran Seas, both of which had increased Gileadan naval activity, but non really noticeable. The area was being monitored via satellite and every other "clean" method as tension in region escalated ever so gradually. At last, they made it to Achaian Peloponnese and were well rested after the long ride, even after their less than smooth exit from HeavenGate Int'l where another low pressure system was wreaking havoc on the coastal area. Both men put on their fresh suits and best smiles to greet their hosts. Both men were a bit peeved at having to come to this foreign country which brazenly discounted Gileadan friendship, but they had their orders and knew their priorities. "Just another job," they told themselves silently. With steps full of a lackadaisical confidence, they went down the steps leading down and out of the plane with hands extended once they reached the base. |

Basileus Kifisia waited beside the diplomatic car and considered the various ways that the following discussion could simply collapse. There were, it occurred to her, many types of hostile diplomacy. There was the experience of brash insults and fiery tempers; there was hate-filled silence; there was the demand and the counter demand. And then, the basileus thought as she girded herself, there was the technique of the Gileadan diplomat and government official: smiles and politeness, masking political cunning and military might that Gilead had yet to overtly display, but which could never be forgotten. The negotiations had yet to even begin, and Kifisia was already tensing up, imagining just how many layers of insincerity would be laid down before some truthful understanding could be reached. As the two Gileadan ambassadors stepped onto the tarmac, the basileus stepped forward to greet them. “Gentlemen, welcome to Kerkyra,” she said, shaking their offered hands. “I hope your flight was pleasant.” Motioning to the car, where the driver held the door open for the diplomats, the basileus said, “Please make yourselves at home. We will be at the Megaron shortly.” |

The two men nodded and grinned as they were led to the car which would escort them to the Megaron. The most "optimistic" of the two was the Deputy Minister of Commerce. He figured that the Peloponnese would be open to any endeavor expanding their internal revenue and exports while retaining an independent market. He also figured that the League of Croons, or at least that's what he called them, would probably coerce the Peloponnese into becoming its manufacturing workhorse. Admittedly, Gilead would probably do the same thing, but in a different manner. His thoughts were interrupted when his fellow Deputy Minister nudged him to notice the architecture of the Achaian capital. Both were impressed, not to the point of gawking, but impressed nonetheless. Much more than they could say for Medai which looked like a futile attempt at a miniature version of Gilead itself. They both laughed at the mutual thought. | ||

As the diplomatic car approached the Megaron, Basileus Kifisia allowed herself a moment of gratification that the Gileadan representatives showed some interest in the scenery of Kerkyra. She could only assume it was entertaining for them, considering that they had chosen not to speak for the ride in favor of looking out the windows, and while she would have liked to know whether they approved or not, it was useful at least to know that Achaian Peloponnese was not beneath the notice of these dignitaries. The basileus silently chided herself for this sense of accomplishment--to pander to foreigners for their fleeting interest was a mark of weakness, not a show of strength--but at least she could affirm to herself that she would have felt this pride regardless of who these delegates were, or where they had come from. The car pulled in front of the main doors to the Megaron at last, and one of the officers at the door immediately arrived beside it to hold the door open. Kifisia noted that the officers were tense today, and understood completely, but none of them were anything less than professional otherwise. Turning to the Gileadan diplomats across from her, the basileus smiled. “Welcome to the Megaron,” she said. “We have set up the office of Ambassador Rodos for our talks; the ambassador will meet us inside. Shall we?” |

Jeremy Carter, Deputy Minister of Commerce, was the first to exit the car. This was the second time he had felt the warm Achaian air brush up against his smooth, freshly shaven face. It reminded him of his childhood days in Faraway, Solterra. Dean Summers, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, followed behind him and was almost disgusted by the warmth, and he longed for the cool air of HeavenGate to return to caress him. When the basileus spoke, both men agreed with a nod and promptly followed her. |

Kifisia led the Gileadan delegates past the officers guarding the entrance of the Megaron and stepped into the entrance hall. The open space was bustling as always, but one man in particular was calmly standing in the middle of the room, waiting as the basileus and her companions approached. “Sirs,” Kifisia began, “this is Ambassador Rodos. I have asked him to act as my aide today.” “It is good to meet you both, gentlemen,” Rodos said with a nod to each of the delegates. He did not smile. “I am looking forward to seeing how far we can come today.” Hopefully, he thought to himself, these discussions would last much longer than his previous aborted attempt at Gileadan diplomacy. He could only assume that these delegates wouldn’t simply quit talking when they were guests far from home, rather than the other way around; they would have no reason to waste their own time like that. The basileus motioned toward one of the corridors leading out of the entrance hall. “If you will come this way, please,” she said, leading the group onward. Within a moment, they had already reached Ambassador Rodos’s office--after all, like all ambassadorial offices in the Megaron, it was situated as near to the entrance, and as far away from the sensitive areas of the building, as possible--and Basileus Kifisia led the way inside. A side table had been set for four, and Kifisia motioned toward it as she held the office door open for the diplomats following her inside. “I hope this will serve for our purposes, gentlemen,” the basileus said as she closed the door behind the group and took her own seat at the table. “Shall we begin?” |

The Deputy Ministers looked at each other after hearing the question, then Jeremy nodded and began. "Firstly, we thank you all for your hospitality. His Majesty's sends his best in regards and hopes that bountiful fruits shall come of this meeting. I am Jeremy Carter, Deputy Minister of Commerce for the United Kingdom of Gileadan States. I've been informed that previous economic promises have been annulled by your government, is this correct?" |

Kifisia raised an eyebrow at the deputy minister’s phrasing. “Previous treaty agreements have been annulled in the interest of national and regional security. That is correct.”

"I simply wanted to be sure we had an accurate report. Now then, before we all begin talking, what is your nation's official stance with the United Kingdom? Are you open to alternate trade agreements, etc? Or does your new-found alliance to Greater Victorium lessened the appeal to trade with us?" Both Deputy Minister's has inquisitive looks on their faces. They assumed that Peloponnese was done with Gilead almost entirely, but the fact that this meeting was being held negated that belief. The incoming answer would solve the conundrum, hopefully. |

“Trade with Gilead is no longer in Achaian Peloponnese’s best interests,” the basileus confirmed. “Our new trading partners are, for the most part, closer to our shores. More to the point, we share the same interests. The Megaron is more comfortable dealing with partners it feels it can trust.” Kifisia gave the Gileadan envoys a curious look. “Indeed, I suppose I should ask the same of yourselves. What is the United Kingdom of Gilead’s stance toward Achaian Peloponnese, and toward the Victorium region? Just how worried should the anax be about those Gileadan naval patrols we’ve been observing in our seas?” |

The Econ Dept Minister's eyebrows arched in worry as his head slightly pulled back in surprise at the Achaian's statement. "I can assure you that our vast international trading system would prove beneficial to any nation desiring increased exports, or imports for that matter. We have connections on each continent and we do our best to keep tariffs, hmm, manageable for all parties involved. This is why Auvernia's puppet state of Acadia has decided to join the Trade Association of North Gilead. They know the benefits of such a partnership." Before Jeremy could go on and any further and say more than what was necessary, his brother deputy minister interjected. "Your Excellencies, I am Dean Summers, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the United Kingdom. It was quite a surprise to my ministry when we learned of your nation's subtle change in attitude towards our own. You see, while our mainland may be thousands of miles away from yours, our presence is not quite so far away, and we thought this to be understood. Furthermore, we hold no ill-will towards Greater Victorium. Nevertheless, the actions of Dawinia concerning the once free state of Rendaria and the actions of Austiana regarding the once democratic state of New Vasconia burns at our deep respect for national sovereignty as it derives from those governed. While that may sound a bit comical coming from a monarchy, own own king was once a democratically elected president and much of our government remains democratic, and the parts of our United Kingdom are welcome to leave when they please, with notice, of course. So, you may rest assured that no matter the rhetoric fed to you from your Victoriumite neighbors, Gilead will respect your nation's sovereignty and is open to trade with you and others, so long as they have the same respect for a nation's sovereignty as we do." |

The basileus nodded to Deputy Minister Summers. “I am very glad to hear that the United Kingdom of Gilead bears no ill will toward the Victorium region,” she said. “You may rest assured in turn that the Victorium region, or at least those elements of it with which we have aligned ourselves, bears no ill will toward Gilead--no ill will, I should say, that is not a direct response to the actions of Gilead itself. The organization that we have formed among ourselves, the League of Castratene, is a purely defensive alliance; it exists to insulate and protect its members from outside actors whose policies do not align with our own. The League is no threat to Gilead as long as Gilead is not a threat to the League.” Kifisia leaned forward. “That said,” she began, “I must say that your nation’s respect for national sovereignty has been well documented. Not by us, thankfully, and not even by our ‘Victoriumite neighbors’; rather, by Izalith. Our Ambassador Delos made quite a report regarding Queen Charlotte Lordran’s presentation to the Union of Nations. He also explained that Crown Prince Gregory of Gilead made no effort to refute the information Queen Charlotte presented there.” Glancing at the other Gileadan diplomat, the basileus added, “With that in mind, sir, Achaian Peloponnese finds your assurances of Gileadan connections ‘on every continent’ more threatening than relieving.” |

"His Majesty had informed me that this particular situation had been spoken of with your Anax, no? Well, anyway, as I stated, Gilead respects 'national sovereignty as it derives from those governed'. In other words, we only hold respect for "sovereignty" if we believe the governed to be free to express dissent against the government and effect change without persecution. Anything else is just about dictatorial, opposing Gileadan, no, human interests. According to our own intelligence reports from Izalith as well as the weird illegal drugs streaming form their supposedly closed borders, Izalith was hiding something from the world. Our people sat idly by for so long, but as more and more of their illegal drugs flooded our streets, the nation's youth became ever fascinated with the seemingly alien substances. Crime rates, unlike in the case of our legalization of marijuana, skyrocketed as people laid themselves out on the streets and screamed, "Beam me up, Great Spider Mother! The web is nigh!'." He took a moment to sigh and catch his breath, straightening out his tie as a mental distraction. "Anyway, as you can see, all of this caused us to resort to less than desirable measures so as to catch some gleaming strip of the truth. So, there was no reason for the Crown Prince to counter the child ruler's words since yes, Gilead spied on Izalith in fear of allowing the country to poison the continent. This is far from the case in Achaian Pelopponese. We're sure your government has its secrets, as all governments do; however, they are not on the detrimental level at which we thought Izalith's to be at. And your people, from what we've seen so far, aren't oppressed. Gilead sees no danger in your country, and we'd like to resume trade for our mutual benefit." |
