Proventia, Aurelia, The Legantian Alliance

Silvanus stood behind the podium, the familiar lights of the cameras shining and almost drowning out everything beyond the surface’s edge. He resisted the urge to look behind him at the six flags hanging limply from their poles, and the single blue-gold flag draped out of sight above them. He focused on preventing his hands from fidgeting, and simply waited.

Above the white-gold glow of the TV lights a single subdued red light sprang to life. Silvanus checked almost absentmindedly that his tie was straight and his suit was wrinkleless. The light blinked green, and Silvanus waited a half-breath before beginning.

“My Fellow Legantians, Citizens of Ullir and Vasio, Lero and Dellinger, Aurelia and Caturix. I come here today to inform you of a most momentous decision made by the Alliance Council. For generations, our peoples have remained separate, distinct. Since our alliance was formed and our Council made whole with the leaders of all our nations, we have known our peoples would not remain separate for very much longer. Now, at last, we know when that day will be.”

Silvanus paused slightly, taking a breath before continuing. “Our Council has decided that our Nations will finally come together and become one. The process has been underway for some time, with our economies, militaries, and transportation systems becoming more interconnected every day. Now our central governments will follow suit. On January Third of this upcoming year, elections will be held for seats on the newly formed Legantian parliament. I implore you all to set that day aside, and to choose your representative carefully.”

“My Fellow Legantians, this will be a time of both trial and opportunity. We must work together towards the brighter future this Union will bring. My Fellow Legantians, let us look together towards the new dawn. Goodnight.”

The single light blinked red again, and the lights of the camera flashed off as a sheet, bringing the room into seeming darkness. The various camera crews, who before had been hidden by the bright glow of their charges, filtered off to the sides and out of the room. Silvanus took the page containing both the transcript of his speech and the latest reports on the military integration of the various Legantian states, and slipped behind the flags at the back of the room. Behind him, almost unnoticed, men began hauling the flags out as the blue and gold ensign of the new Legantian state flowed down to fill their place.

The war had turned decisively in the favor of the Alliance. Major breakthroughs in the Southern front had led to a collapse of the entire UMC front line, resulting in a withdrawal of all frontline UMC units back to behind the Sktete River, about twenty kilometers from Kaisergrad. This withdrawal to the "Sktete Line" was initiated along the areas of greatest contact, east of the town of Linkthoven, and was then continued down the southern front, where Alliance forces found themselves fighting into hilly and mountainous terrain bristling with prepared defensive positions. To the north, along the border with Lero, fighting had been less intense. The majority of force in the area had been withdrawn to strengthen the Sktete Line further south. This, however, proved to be a mistake. On the 23rd, at 0800 Local, Lero announced its intention to honor the Treaty of Alliance and declared war on the UMC. Skirmishes along the border flared like sparks from a flame and died just as quickly.

However, the quick death of these sparks told the commander of the UMC forces in the area, General Baldur Franke, that this wasn't a move the Lerotians had planned far in advance. A small recon thrust and its subsequent destruction told him that it wouldn't matter much longer. He therefore made a rash, yet logical decision. With two full divisions of badly-needed armor, he defected to the Alliance, declaring his immediate command the "Free Army of Cautrix". Reenforced by Lerotian army units now under Alliance command - a sign of the changing times - they pushed straight through their former comrades and captured three of the six vital bridges of the town of Weisstadat before loyal UMC troops could destroy them. This vital bridgehead shifted the focus of the campaign north, with both sides rushing what reserves they had to the town.

This was not to say the fighting died down elsewhere. The Alliance Second and Sixth Panzerdivisions under General Alexander Kohler engaged their UMC counterparts, the Löwe and Stahl Divisions, in a titanic clash of armor in the plains just west of the Sktete. By the 25th, approximately half of the Stahl division was left as burning husks, with the Löwe Division down to two-thirds its operational strength with only six Alliance Leopards destroyed and ten damaged.

What forces the UMC had left to spare, mercenaries or otherwise, were drawn back for a defense of the capitol. The Kaiser's government called on a major power - any major power - to preserve their independence.

Alliance forces in former UMC territory began hearing rumors of facilities where those who were "Possessed by Demons" were "Cured". Alliance Command dismissed the rumors as fantasy.

"It is good to meet you all," said Ladislaus, his hands emerging from his cloak. "I have a special desire to get rid of this so called 'Kaiser' of Cautrix from his throne..." The server came with another platter stacked with glasses of beer. She set them down, with Ladislaus keeping quiet, as to not spill this information into the ears of a complete stranger. "As I was saying, I would for you to kill the lord of Cautrix. It doesn't matter how he's killed, it just needs to be done." Ladislaus took a sip of the beer and awaited Ivan's words.

Ivan was silent for a moment before turning to Sergei.

"Sergei, did you know about this?"

Sergei took a drink before responding. "Of course I did, Ivan."

"And didn't tell me?"

Sergei shrugged. "I'm telling you now."

Ivan scoffed. "How are we supposed to kill the Kaiser?"

"Simple," Sergei answered. "We arrange an audience- somewhere of our choosing- and shoot him."

Ivan went wide eyed. "Somewhere of our choosing? How do you expect to do that? What makes you think he will come to us?"

"Ivan," Sergei explained. "Ten of our men halted an entire invasion force from Decapitane. We're kind of the man's last, best hope at this point. We most likely will have some pull over him."

"What of his guards?"

Sergei laughed and began to dial an encrypted number into his encrypted satellite phone. "We'll shoot them too. I'm arranging the meeting now."

Hostile UMC territory, 34 miles from Decapitane

It seemed to the new Marshall of the 3rd Section that the first invasion hadn't all been bad.

Of course, there was the large amount of death and humiliation at the hands of only 10 men, but now they knew how to take advantage of the terrain and their forces. Now, he and his forces were rolling in fifty ERC 90 Sagaie-2s that had been available on their second outing, plus 50 Nexter Aravis IMVs they had been able to acquire. The current army was perhaps smaller than the last, with only 550 men in total, but they were more agile, better protected, and more deadly. They had stormed through the last 30 miles of hostile territory.

Right now, though, the armada had stopped for a check of their maps, and were almost ready to go. The Marshall knew where they could go, and the way they were going, they would be in Kaisergrad in less than a week - without resistance, of course. This was not a holiday to Legantus. So, the driver of his Aravis turning the engine on, and strapping himself in, he had a grim thought.

They had previously been humiliated by a band of Zaliviyans. They had been forced to retreat out of the UMC. But now, they would be unstoppable.

Weisstadat, UMC side of the Skete river
May 26th, 2015

"Shit! Get in the building, Move, Move, Move!"

The crash of a T-80's main gun and the thundering of its machine guns punctuated Alexandre's frantic shouting. What was left of the dismounted platoon scrambled into the nearest building as the machine guns cut down what men had been unfortunate enough to have been caught in the center of the street. Since the UMC had lost the bridges, they had been throwing every unit they had left at them to force the Alliance troops out. Their defensive lines elsewhere were holding strong, thanks to well-hidden and well-supplied AGTM positions and the destruction of all other bridges across the river. The UMC push had managed to dislodge the Alliance toeholds on the other two bridges. The final bridge was barely two city blocks down from where the Alliance soldiers were pinned.

Thunder from the other side of the river announced the Alliance response. Two Leopard 2 A6s sat stopped in the center of the bridge, only the lead tank able to fire. Its cannon roared again, the shot once again deflecting off the T-80's applique armor. The UMC tank's attention turned to this greater threat as infantry surged around it and another tank crashed through a building.

From their positions inside the buildings, Alexandre's unit opened up with assault rifles and M3s.

The Alliance's position on the far side of the bridge was deteriorating by the minute.

Kaisergrad, UMC

This was not how he had planned it.

The war should have been quick and glorious, and then his nation allowed to do God's Work in peace. Instead, the Alliance had decided it was greater than God's Will and had forced this conflict to a point he had not foreseen. If this was one of His tests, it was surely the most difficult he had ever faced. Kaiser Wilhelm feared he would have to use measures God himself had forbidden.

There was a glimmer of hope he could avoid that, however. The mercenaries who had stopped the DeCapitine invasion had requested a meeting. He would be remiss to not meet with those who had saved his nation from a war on two fronts.

He did not see his butler's smile as he left with his bodyguard to their appointed meeting place.

Kaiser Forest
Rural Cautrix
Around 9 PM

Sergei and Ivan stood around with two men by their side. One of these very men was not a mercenary at all, but rather the future Kaiser of Cautrix. Ten more hid in the trees around them, forming a perimeter in the woods to wait for the Kaiser.

Ostensibly, the Kaiser Forest was a good place to meet. An ancient forested preserve in the northern reaches of the country, the gnarled trees had grown tall and thick here. Only those who knew the forest could navigate it. It was private, and secretive. But, with all these armed men around, it would also seem quite well protected. Nothing bad could possibly happen to the Kaiser here.

And so Sergei and Ivan waited, hoping that the Kaiser's bodyguards would not be overwhelming. Ten men would most likely be enough, but just in case, more mercenaries were held in reserve.

The Kaiser was driven up in a military vehicle. While he was nominally the head of the UMC military, it was his first time in one of the armored chariots that served as the workhorses of the Civil War. It was an... enlightening experience, to say the least.

His guards disembarked their vehicles first. Six men, armed with AN-94s and light body armor. They were watching the trees warily for signs of Alliance commando units, with wary glances being occasionally thrown skyward.

The Kaiser then exited the vehicle. He appeared grand, though to those who knew how the war was going it appeared more ego than actual power. He stepped forward, his protection scanning the woods and clutching their 94s nervously.

"You wished to speak with me?"

Ivan looked to Sergei. Sergei looked to Ivan.

Sergei let out a slight chuckle before addressing the Kaiser.

"Not particularly."

As Sergei raised and aimed his AK-47 with trained speed, so did all the other mercenaries, to his side and sitting in "duck blinds" high in the trees. Even Ladislaus von Neumarkt raised the weapon given to him by the mercenaries, albeit more slowly. As soon as the weapons were raised, the firefight began.

The Kaiser barely had the time to wonder what was happening before he was hit by assault rifle fire. His guards, surprised, still reacted quickly. Their rifles managed to bark a few times before they too were cut down by the hail of bullets from the trees.

The would-be agent of God did not even have a chance to lament his error in judgement before he found himself pulled into the black.

And so Kaiser Wilhelm of Cautrix passed into legend, to the sound of gunfire and laughter.

This laughter came specifically from a wiry Rusalian man, ecstatically bouncing around as the last of the Cautrixian soldiers hit the ground.

"Ha! Congratulations men!" Sergei called to the trees without looking to his rear. "Our first regicide, but likely not our last!"

Sergei bounded up to the dead Kaiser and snatched the crown off of his head. Surprisingly, it was not very gaudy. A simple golden band, set with patterned jewels around its circumference.

He turned back to face Ladislaus, who had come up behind him.

"Congratulations, Your Majesty," Sergei said as he plopped the Cautrixian crown upon the head of the new monarch. He then scanned the area behind Ladislaus. Something was not right.

He couldn't make out what was wrong until he looked to the ground, and saw Ivan's massive frame lying there, bloody, cold, and very dead.

Ladislaus walked around with the crown on his head for a few moments, until he took it off his head. He looked at the crown and threw it on the ground and trampled it with one swift blow from his boot. "Such trinkets are wasted on men like him, with no eye for statecraft! The poor fool."

Ladislaus walked towards some of the surviving men of the Cautrois Household Guard. "Gentlemen, I am your lord now. My name is Ladislaus von Neumarkt." He looked some wounded men, and turned to Sergei. "Let's get these boys to a medic. Can't have them die." He turned to the body of the dead Kaiser, a mercenary came up him and said "What shall we do with him?"

Ladislaus turned to him and said "We shall bury him in the family crypt." He retrieved his former crown and continued, "That being said, we must provide for his family."

[OOC: My men are under the impression that Kaiser Wilhelm is still alive]

Hostile UMC Territory, 2 miles from Kaisergrad

Relatively speaking, this journey had been easy.

They had sailed through the Legantian countryside with almost no resistance, reaching this point in under a week. The Marshall suspected it would get much harder to progress when they entered the city, however. They had stopped for bearings on a nearby hillside and had been surprised to note that they had arrived at their target.

"It's a bit run-down," the Marshall thought to himself.

It would be easy to take, too. However many troops their were, there was no competition against the horde of Sagaies parked behind him. They could simply enter from 5 different compass directions and have the Kaiser surrounded by the end of the day.

"Let's move, men! Time to go!" he cried. So, climbing into the passenger seat of his APC, the rumble of engine filled the morning air, and the Kaiser's doom rolled down the hillside.

By now, the men had loaded up the wounded and dead onto a empty supply truck, whilst Ladislaus and Sergei made their way to an armored vehicle. As the corpses were hauled into the truck for a proper burial, Ladislaus came upon the body of Ivan. He looked upon the face of Ivan, and simply muttered "Thank you." He turned to Sergei, "You and Ivan shall be given full state honors within the nation of Cautrix. Your duty to the Kingdom has been duly noted, and will be rewarded post haste."

As the duo returned to the armored car to begin the voyage home, an envoy from the city presented Ladislaus with news. "My Lord, the Decapitanes are within striking distance of the city of Kaysersberg, Commander Nemeth requests that you return at once!" Ladislaus boarded the APC while thinking to himself, "My first act as King is running away with my tail between my legs like some toy dog!" Indeed, Ladislaus was now king, but he felt like a leaf in the wind, beholden to Decapitain zephyrs.

"Balasz," began Ladislaus, "Spread the news to the city, that I am their new king! To all remaining folk and soldier alike!"

It hadn’t taken long after the kaiser’s order to retreat to Kaisergrad that the villagers had had enough. Meleagros hadn’t been surprised. Under his command they had fought in two battles, one of which was a short slaughter of the enemy, the other a long-term grind against another mercenary force well outside of its comfort zone. The men from Cainisaben weren’t used to taking orders, especially the orders of foreigners, but as long as those orders were the difference between life and death, they had put up with them. When Kaiser Wilhelm ordered all of his forces to converge on the capital, however, the villagers had finally decided that there was no further point to putting their lives on the line for the kaiser’s wayward dream. The vast majority bucked up their courage and demanded to be released from their service; the general, seeing the shadow of defeat looming, had no reason to deny a desperate lot their freedom, and sent them home. But he certainly welcomed the enlistment of the courageous, the ambitious, and the most foolish, those few villagers who thought that they had finally escaped their rural existence in Cainisaben, and were willing to fight under the banner of a doomed nation to see that dream come true.

The watching and waiting, though, nearly drove even the Achaian regulars mad. Kaisergrad was obviously intended to be Kaiser Wilhelm’s last stand, a gesture that Meleagros had seen to be futile as soon as the order to retreat had been issued. In the tense atmosphere, troops did their duties mechanically, wondering if this would be the last chance they would get to clean their pistols or service their vehicles before the opening shots were fired. Lesser minds were already close to the breaking point, and a few men had had to be taken out of the rotation for rest and relaxation away from their duties for a week or so in order to recover their nerves. As much as Meleagros hated to see such weakness in his men, he knew it was inevitable that he would encounter it from time to time, as he had already done in previous campaigns in the MEF. Thus, he had set up his camp within the city accordingly, with amenities designed to relax his men as much as possible in their stressful situation. The presvyteros had been invaluable here, setting up a temporary chapel in an abandoned bank nearby in order to comfort Makaria’s people and bolster their courage in this trying time.

Their distress, thankfully, didn’t dull their edge in any but the most desperate moments. The same could be said for the Caturixian regulars and whatever other mercenary groups that had joined the MEF in their Kaisergrad prison. Thus it wasn’t difficult to prepare when the report of strange noises coming from within spitting distance of the capital came through. Meleagros immediately sent back an instruction to get more specific information, and in the meantime set up additional lookouts to watch the hills abutting the Caturixian capital. He got his reports from both those lookouts and the scouts outside the city’s perimeter: There were tanks, lots of them, splitting up at least once and maybe more, all heading for Kaisergrad… and they displayed on their hulls an insignia, flag, and motto that the Achaians had already encountered once in this too-long campaign. It was one good thing in a sea of irritation. These people, at least, had a poor record of winning.

Meleagros immediately decided to head off the first Decapitan group to enter the city. Splitting his own forces into two, he ordered the smaller of the two forces to remain behind as a reserve—either for his own forces or for other defenders pressed by the other approaching Decapitan detachments—while his remaining two thousand men, with thirty APCs (twelve of which were equipped with mortar cannons), advanced to a suburban business area whose multistory towers allowed for a perfect vantage point. The streets below were already barricaded and well-fortified, as per the siege preparations that Kaiser Wilhelm had ordered upon the retreat; this was the case in all of the city’s outlying areas. It would be rather mad for any enemy to try to bring tanks into the city from this or any other point, but perhaps the Decapitans were willing to rely on their numbers to make up the difference in planning… Either way, Meleagros would be ready for this group, and no doubt his allies elsewhere in the city would be equally prepared for the others as they arrived.

Finally ready, the general sent the order to his mortars to fire on the Decapitans as they came into range. He couldn’t hide the APCs if he wanted to give them a good range, sadly, but he could at the very least make use of their cannons in the opening salvo, and he was more than happy to use their bulk to add to the bulwarks that made Kaisergrad all but impenetrable. Thus, as the explosions began in the midst of a too-confident enemy, Meleagros found himself smiling.

‘From the valley floor to the streets of Kaisergrad,’ he thought to himself, ‘you will simply never learn.’

Now only one and a half miles from the city and advancing, the Marshall commanded all. As the first shells hit the ground, the Marshall smiled, and put his plan into action.

"So the defender is a one trick pony," he thought, and issued orders. "One, straight on and manoeveur. Two, left. Three, right. Accelerate. Split so they don't take you all out. Enter when I say."

Right on cue, two packs of APCs peeled off the advancing army, and his own IMV sped up and started making gentle weaving curves. They would have to leave the condemned ones hit in the opening blast behind. The Marshall had been considering this possibility, and knew that mortars were much too slow for these to be seriously affected. He had a look at the speedometer and saw that they were doing almost 50 mph. They would be there in just over a minute.
