Proventia, Aurelia, The Legantian Alliance

Silvanus stood behind the podium, the familiar lights of the cameras shining and almost drowning out everything beyond the surface’s edge. He resisted the urge to look behind him at the six flags hanging limply from their poles, and the single blue-gold flag draped out of sight above them. He focused on preventing his hands from fidgeting, and simply waited.

Above the white-gold glow of the TV lights a single subdued red light sprang to life. Silvanus checked almost absentmindedly that his tie was straight and his suit was wrinkleless. The light blinked green, and Silvanus waited a half-breath before beginning.

“My Fellow Legantians, Citizens of Ullir and Vasio, Lero and Dellinger, Aurelia and Caturix. I come here today to inform you of a most momentous decision made by the Alliance Council. For generations, our peoples have remained separate, distinct. Since our alliance was formed and our Council made whole with the leaders of all our nations, we have known our peoples would not remain separate for very much longer. Now, at last, we know when that day will be.”

Silvanus paused slightly, taking a breath before continuing. “Our Council has decided that our Nations will finally come together and become one. The process has been underway for some time, with our economies, militaries, and transportation systems becoming more interconnected every day. Now our central governments will follow suit. On January Third of this upcoming year, elections will be held for seats on the newly formed Legantian parliament. I implore you all to set that day aside, and to choose your representative carefully.”

“My Fellow Legantians, this will be a time of both trial and opportunity. We must work together towards the brighter future this Union will bring. My Fellow Legantians, let us look together towards the new dawn. Goodnight.”

The single light blinked red again, and the lights of the camera flashed off as a sheet, bringing the room into seeming darkness. The various camera crews, who before had been hidden by the bright glow of their charges, filtered off to the sides and out of the room. Silvanus took the page containing both the transcript of his speech and the latest reports on the military integration of the various Legantian states, and slipped behind the flags at the back of the room. Behind him, almost unnoticed, men began hauling the flags out as the blue and gold ensign of the new Legantian state flowed down to fill their place.

Meleagros watched through his binoculars as the Decapitan tanks began a speedy charge, breaking into three groups as they did so and attempting to weave through incoming fire. For the front rank, which was understandably a bit more spread out, this was moderately successful, but the more clustered forces behind them had less room to maneuver and became much easier targets. The resulting casualties might not have seemed impressive compared to the number of tanks still charging, but the general was pleased to see several smoking hulks remain behind.

Those shells that missed the tanks were just as important as those that hit, of course. “Keep firing in front of those groups,” Meleagros ordered through his radio. “Put as many craters as you can in front of them. Slow them down as much as possible.” Their speed was impressive, but it was becoming harder and harder to maintain it when craters forced the tanks to either navigate around or dip in and out… a slow-down at the front that only became more magnified toward the rear, where tanks slowed down not just to navigate the hazards, but simply to wait for the tanks ahead of them to navigate the hazards first. More and more tanks fell to mortar fire for that reason alone.

The rest kept coming.

[I am engaging the "Second" Group]

Ladislaus's convoy entered the inner city, while being feted by his mercenaries. The Command Post of the Nemacian army was placed in an old post office not far from the city's medieval core. The Nordenstraße, the city's major arterial thoroughfare that exited from the city's former north gate. It was constructed in the 1880's, as the city expanded beyond the city walls and its glacis, which was now the large and spacious city park that separated the Old Town from the new town.

"My King!", yelled Balasz, as the convoy roared towards the palace. He waved his beret, feeling accomplished. "Sir!", exclaimed a soldier "The tanks are in place in the Glacis, and the half of the infantry has been placed inside the buildings, The rest are being retired into the inner city. As the convoy roared away, Balasz's radio crackled, emitted some message from the front line.

The Nemacians abandoned the watchtowers erected alongside the Outer Ringstraße, and had opted to hide in surrounding buildings. The watchtowers were by now sitting ducks - the obvious first target, and were now desolate. Solders fitted with helmet mounted thermal scopes spotting the incoming Sagaies via infrared vision. The heat of the Sagaies gave away their position, and Otto Krakauer looked down his scope, and prepared to take the opening shot. Other surrounding nests confirmed they had visuals on the incoming Sagaies. Now was time. He fired his , and hit the first incoming Sagaie.

The other nests soon followed, firing upon the moving Sagaies from their elevated position on the second and third stories of the buildings they occupied. The infantry on the ground awaited the rest of the Sagaies to pass, to fall into the tire spikes laid into the streets.

As Sergei walked into each of the many barracks in which his mercenaries were being housed, the mercenaries stood to attention in respect. They could perhaps see something different about the way he walked, now that Ivan had died. His initial shock having worn off, Sergei was angry. Coming to each barracks one by one, Sergei made an announcement.

"Company captains will have a meeting in my quarters in one hour."

At this meeting, Sergei laid out his intentions to the leaders of his company.

"Alright, kameradski, I'll level with you. I'm angry. I'm very angry, and I want to take it out on something. So I've volunteered us for a dangerous mission."

From the foot of his own bunk, Sergei unfolded a large map of Kaisergrad. The fifteen captains gathered around, crowded and jostling for position in the crowded room. On it, Sergei had placed the positions of the Decapitans in electrical tape, and friendly forces in blue tape.

"The Decapitans have broken their forces into five groups, surrounding the city and trying to push in and strangle us. One of them you already engaged, when you helped the new King and I get down the Nordenstrasse. Two of these groups are already being engaged. Here, in the southwestern quarter of the city, the Achaians are engaging the enemy in a big fight, throwing everything they've got toward them. The Decapitans will probably have to divert forces from the other groups to fight them at some point. The new king himself is overseeing the fight to the north, which will hold those forces up. Any reinforcements to the southwestern front will likely come from the east.

"What we'll be doing is making it difficult for the Decapitans to reinforce these fronts." Sergei pointed to the Kaisergrad beltway, the maze of highways and ramps that ringed the outside of the city.

"Gentlemen, we're going to mine the beltway and destroy the ramps leading into the city, from the cardinal east to the cardinal south. This will make it difficult, even impractical, for the Decapitans to approach the city in their APCs, because of this light forest surrounding the city here, before you get into the suburbs. With any luck, they'll send their infantry to approach the city on foot, through the suburbs. When and if they do, we'll be waiting for them, divided up into individual platoons spaced apart and ready to ambush them. We'll make good use of the residential districts, since the possibility of civilians still being there will keep the Decapitan Army from just straight up leveling us with artillery fire. We'll have some men stationed up in the houses with sniper rifles and put up some claymores attached to motion sensors on the streets themselves. When those claymores go off, I want a hail of bullets coming from the houses on that street to clean up whatever else is left." Sergei pointed to two random captains.

"Your companies will be in reserve to act as a quick reaction force for platoons that get too deep into the shit. You'll also be the ones coming with me, to destroy the beltway, so get ready, and bring a shit ton of C4."

Sergei rolled his map up. "If the Decapitans don't take the bait, then we mine the suburbs thoroughly and move out to another front. Either way, gentlemen, we're going to hit these Decaffeinated fucks, and hit them hard. Get your men ready, and don't forget to bring assign an RPG launcher and ammo to each platoon. If we encounter any vehicles, I want us to be ready."
