The people gathered at the table were of a comical sort. A bishop, a general, and a prince enter a Capitol conference room. Specifically, it was the Bishop of Kilojowia, General Geosif Kirno, and Prince Nikolas. All three of which were closely tied to Queen Dorthea in her preparations before ascending to the throne. If you have a sharp eye, and a knack for political intrigue, then you’d say that these three would be the most powerful men in the country save for the Queen herself. Dorthea was concerned as to the security of the country’s claimed borders, and as such made preparations for an increasing military presence on the peripherals. In the long term, these islands would expand the country’s strategic depth, and could prove valuable land for entrepreneurs. As a self-proclaimed ‘Capitalist’s Paradise’, Burgjano would make decisive actions to further plans her economic expansion.

Practically since its founding, Burgjano had made claims to surrounding islands. The major claims were to the islands of Ralk, Rholm, and Rhaligik Islands. While many of the smaller islands and Ralk have since become very obviously controlled by Burgjano, the Rholm and especially the Rhaligik islands have seen little to no direct government influence or development on them. While their story with Victorumite influences and philosophy is complicated, the Burgjano government had been content with letting their claims to these islands deteriorate somewhat thanks to the support of the Union of Gilead. The old Prince Jotlich had trusted the nearby superpower to use her navy to prevent other nations from bringing government to the anarchic island in return for Burgjano's close ties and largely exclusive economic dealings. Since Burgjano has become as economically strong as it is, her government believes it is now time to bring hard control to her Peripherals themselves. Their first target is Rhaligik. Burgjano does not have a large navy, but they only need methods of transport; they would not need many warships for this task. And besides, they were not fighting an army, they were fighting untrained native wanna-bes and anarchists who don't know the first thing about organized warfare. Sure their soldiers were not much better trained, or equipped (haha!), but they were willing to fulfil their objective the Burgjano way: Throwing the bodies of complaining draftees and undesirables at the problem until it solves itself!

As the cold, or at least colder, air of night blew over the sea, the fading red light of sunset may have given away a strange sight to natives with sharp eyes. For most of them, seeing a ship was a rare sign of the Gods, and one not exactly associated with bountiful hunts, and for some who came from the northern villages, it was the capitalists of the north interfering again with their anarchistic paradise. Still, one of the native tribals thought he saw the sight of the ill omen. He tried to warn his people, but as the only one who had seen it, he was ignored. Besides, the latest hunts were actually relatively bountiful for once, so such an ill omen could not have come, could it?

Steaming towards the island of Rhaligik was a relatively small flotilla of ships. These consisted of cargo ships, two light Burgjanoan warships, and a moderately sized cruise liner whose use was requested from corporations on the island at market price. It would have perhaps seemed comical to a country with amphibious assault ships on hand, but Burgjano does not have substantial naval assets. However, in this scale, it was not very fiscally wasteful. This sort of method was used fairly commonly by the government to ferry troops. While they often prefered to use their small stock of transport planes to ferry troops, they paid cruise lines to ferry troops fairly often. In this case, the ships were not just carrying the usual Burgjanoan regulars, but half were conscripted by the government into the Guarda Patriotas, a special regiment of conscripts that is targeted to be purposefully filled with between 15-40% undesirable peoples. This could include dissenters, people of countering political parties (liberals, communists/socialists, even moderate conservatives), minorities, etc. The GP is infamous in hushed whispers as a place where the government dumps these people as cannon fodder. The undesirables are scattered throughout the regiment under the command of carefully appointed commanders. It was not uncommon for these commanders to be retired 'inquisitors'. In this case, the part of the GP that was sent (only a part of the regiment was sent) was about 23% undesirables, and made up about half of the troops being sent to Rhaligik. The other half of the troops were Burgjanoan regulars.

On the Island of Rholm, things were moving quicker and more easily. The island already had a few outposts, and so the troops, who were entirely regulars, landed in the southeastern outpost, close to Ralk. In fact, many of the troops were shifted directly from Ralk to Rholm. The troops sent were also much fewer, only about 150 to Rhaligik's 720. Most of the people sent were builders rather than soldiers. On Rholm, the government simply planned to expand presant outposts and found two more further north. Rholm was smaller than Rhaligik, and was not inhabited by tribals, but was long sense a site for Burgjanoan trade. In recent times, companies had lobbied for further infrastructure on the island to better extract its resources, which was exactly this operation's plan on Rholm.

Back in the capital, agreements were made. Tracks of land in the two islands were auctioned off to the highest bidder, restricted only to corporations with substantial investment in the country. A handful of promising local companies and some Gileadian Megacorps participated in the competitive auction. While the land was not as good as Ralk, and was not fit for large scale agriculture, there were certainly uses to it. Several eager geologic groups gathered at the auction to sell their services to the auctioneers to investigate the natural resources of the islands in detail. Even a local ranching corporation was interested in a grassy plateau in the interior of Rhaligik. Many megacorps signed on the the Fábricas Reforma Social program that Burgjano offered on the island. The auction was hosted by Prince Nikolas, who boasted about the government's intentions for cultivating profit and pacifying the natives of Rhaligik.

In the cool air of dusk, the ships pulled up close to the shore. A handful of smaller ships following the flotilla began to ferry people and supplies to the beach. This process would take some time, as the military did not have the luxury of specialized equipment for such a landing, and there was no infrastructure in place on Rhaligik. The beach was bare, and gently sloped upward further inland. It faded into a large stretch of plains, before reaching up to a line of shield volcanoes making up the spine of the island. Most of the nearby area was flat plains, which suited the disembarking troops well. Further inland, however, the tribals would be able to set up a more effective gorilla defence. The military plan in place was to set up overnight, then make a mechanized push south into the tribals' core villages. From this initial strike, they would fan out and suppress any insurgency that the natives would initiate. The troops were under orders to kill any natives they find; the operation was a planned genocide. The natives were uneducated, illiterate, and did not speak a commonly known language; they were totally useless to the country as laborers or workers. They were decided to be a complete drain on national resources and potential, and must be wiped out.

Throughout the night, soldiers and supplies were shipped from the flotilla to the beach. A small group of people, about 80 in total, all regulars, were positioned around the base camp to form a perimeter. Some of the first supplies brought ashore were for these guards. These men set up machine gun emplacements on nearby hills and stood up spotlights to search the area. By this time there was no point trying to hide, the lights and noise of the ships and base camp were enough to let them be noticed. It was just a matter of time before some filthy tribal scum came to probe the perimeter.

While this went on, nearby native villages came together to discuss the miraculous event. The chieftains claimed it was a blessing from the gods. They were prosperous with hunts lately, and now the gods provide them with prey that comes to them? How marvelous! The chiefs riled up the men, and sent a group of their best scouts out to bring back a head of one of the invaders. As they slowly made their way out of the regional main village, they were surrounded by celebrating villagers. Women threw bead necklaces onto their heads, rubbed their faces with the blood of fish, and preformed lavish rituals to celebrate their glory. In high moods, the men left the village, and sunk into their experienced sneaking patterns. As intelligent and cautious men, they would be of course be very careful. Several times men had come from beyond to invade their paradise, weather they were ambitious capitalists from Gilead, traders from Burgjano, or one of the old Expeditions from Oeslan. Every time in the past, they failed to uproot the diverse cast of Rhaligikians from the interior of the island, and were eventually worn down by ambushes. Curious times, these were. Clearly the gods had grown bored.

Sitting on a chair on the south part of the perimeter line was a soldier named Joseph. As one of the soldiers 'lucky' enough to be drawn as part of the perimeter guards, he was sitting on this little plastic chair for the past four hours. Jesus Christ, he thought, this is so boring! Usually no one cares if I pull out some cards or a can, but since we're in a 'combat zone', they won't let me draw in the dirt, much less play games to pass the time. It's just stupid tribals, not some competent force! Instead, Joseph spent the last four hours doing little but complaining silently in his head. Even the regular troops of Burgjano weren't as disciplined as those of other countries. You might begin to understand why the government does not provide life insurance, if any insurance at all, for its soldiers. Joseph looked back at the base camp. Behind him simple towers had been erected on higher points by engineers, and were fitted with floodlights pointed inwards. Even from here, Joseph could hear the distant sounds of machinery as the Logistical Corps did its work. He would also occasionally hear the roar of a aircraft flying overhead, or one of the military's precious utility helicopters patrolling beyond the perimeter with infra-red cameras. It may have been a little bit concerning how infrequently he heard this was, but Joseph was too busy cursing his CO for confiscating his card deck, The Bastard!. Why couldn't they just go in guns blazing? Why are they taking so long? Had he paid more attention to his training, he might have remembered the lectures on logistics, supply chains, and the grave importance of logistics on the modern army, but he had been too busy whispering jokes with his buddies. Oh well, Burgjano was used to poor quality troops. Even with her small size, Burgjano was confident she had enough warm bodies to smother any problems she faced. If people began to complain about it back home, she would have even more bodies to throw.

The Royal Engineer Corps was perhaps the most serious branch of the armed forces apart from the Guardiões da Coroa. While Burgjano was confident in its manpower, it can be difficult to harness that manpower if you can't feed them. As such, it was more careful about its engineers than its soldiers. Engineers got useful benefits, actually competitive training, and were one of the few classes of people that the government actually cared about. You could almost think they were on par with volunteer armies if you didn't look close or for long. They even had some basic standards in the members they let in! I know this may be hard to believe, but trust me, they actually might have been taught something in their lives. Anyway, while soldiers like Joseph complained, the REC were putting together the FOB and setting up supply plans for when the troops began to march: Where do these beans go, where do we haul this ammo, etc. Of course, they complained and delayed too, they hated how the troops would bother them every hour "Are we ready yet?", "You were supposed to have that done an hour ago.", "Where's my food?", etc. As if they could expect anyone in the Burgjanoan military to finish something on time. Still, they were almost on the last shipment from the flotilla. Now they just had to get everything ready in the FOB before they could consider moving out. Maybe they would be done before 10:00.

Meanwhile, the men dispatched to meet the Burgjanoans were approaching the perimeter. Every once in a while, the God of War would begin to rumble in the distance, and they would hide. Some of the more enlightened from the western villages knew its source, but were respectul for northern traditions. It usually would not take long for him to pass over them. The men were happy anyway, his presence meant battle was near, and battle meant food and loot. Just like all those times before, these foreigners were gifts by the God of the Sea for the island people.

In the west of Rhaligik, people did things a little different from the Northern Villages. Unlike the northerners, who loved to go far into the wilderness on hunts and live in villages, living the 'native lifestyle', the easterners were more a society of anarchists. They came from many nations and often smuggled themselves onto Rhaligik to join the glorious anarchists collective. While the northerners liked to remain isolated in huts, the anarchists retained limited contact with the outside world. Small trading ships would occasionally come by to sell the anarchists resources in exchange for hand made artifacts to be sold in tourist traps across the Devinarian. While they did not allow tourists or visitors to resist being overwhelmed, a small amount of them had set up shop in the alleys of towns in neighboring areas to sell trinkets and pass on the 'Rhaligik way'. There are many stories of their clashes with the Burgjanoan government, many of which are mistaken for humor, but suffice it to say they not only hated government, but hated the Burgjanoan government in particular. Upon hearing word from the northern tribes, they realized that the 'capitalist oppressors' of the north were coming for another fight with them. Many of them gathered together in a meeting to discuss what to do.

Kile stared off: "Why does the government always need to get its hands on everything, man? Why can't it leave our little paradise alone!"

One of the messengers from the northerners spoke, "The Gods are testing us. We must show the superiority of our moral methods and wipe out them out before their big-canoes bring more."

From beyond the window, they heard the dreaded voice of the most annoying man on Rhaligik, "Goddammit Carlos, you were just brought in by boat a year and a half ago! You lived by a harbor!"

Kile breathed a sigh of annoyance. "Shut up Arnold, it's the Rhaligik way to accept all ways of life, wheather neo-tribalism, anarchism, or whatever you want. Also, his name is Blinding Feet, don't speak to him by his old name."

Arnold opened the door and stepped inside. Half of the gathering moaned, the other half dropped their heads in annoyance. "Either way, what are we going to do about these guys?"

Kile smiled. "While I guess the shipments won't be coming anymore, our last one brought a healthy quantity of dynamite. We've still got our guns, our land, and we'll make them bleed dry, like we've always done."

Soaring through the air, a group of four Burgjanoan attack aircraft flew over the Devinarian Sea towards the largest anarchistic commune on the west of Rhaligik. It's primary purpose was to cut off Rhaligik by disrupting its only substantial 'port'. Two of the aircraft would dump swaths of white phosphorous on supply piles, while the other two would drop bombs to blow up the equipment in the 'port'. They flew at height, not fearing anti-aircraft defenses. As they gained sight of the coast, they armed their ordnance, and as they flew in sight of the commune, they were spotted. Some of the anarchists panicked and ran, and others fired their hand weapons, but the aircraft were flying too high to be hit. The aircraft released their ordnance, the harbor and a small smuggling ship in dock were hit by the high explosives, while some supply piles burst in smoke, their munitions and arms burning. The aircraft quickly turned around to return to their air base on Ralk. The 'harbor' was still recoverable, although would probably be a frequent site for bombing, but the supplies slowly burned for hours. Very little could be salvaged from the burned piles, and the spectacular burning made the population wary. They had worried that Burgjano would be in for a second round of trying to recover the island, and now that their military had become more modernized, the invasion seemed soon. Now that it was here, though, many locals were terrified. They were not soldiers! Still, many others were fiercely protective of their way of life, and would not give it up easily.

Further west, the early Rhaligik scouting force had reached the Burgjanoan landing point. The heft up their rifles, and opened fire on the perimeter. The regulars where startled. They had been briefed that the locals would probably use good firearms, but they still thought of them as uncivilized tribals. After a moment, they began to resist. Fighting on the perimeter lasted for three hours, and showed no signs of slowing down, but the scouting force never penetrated to the FOB inside. The engineers and men in the FOB continued their work, though perhaps a bit faster. In three hours, their work was complete, and the soldiers in the FOB grouped up and began to set out.

The scouting force drifted from bush to bush, hill to hill. They had trained all their life to be superb marksmen. While they more often practiced on static targets, or the rare animal, the quality of their training far outshone the Burgjanoan regulars. At first, they were devastating the Burgjanoans. They were shot from hills far away, and never saw their deaths coming. The first Rhaligik loss only occured after the blood of over a dozen Burgjanoans soaked Rhaligik ground. However, as the firefight drew on, the Burgjanoans adapted their tactics, and began to respect the Rhaligiks more. The Burgjanoans also gained more support. The Rhaligiks had trouble when Burgjano's second hand helicoptors found them using IR vision, and lit them up with spotlights. Burgjanoan APCs also began to roll out to harass and disrupt the Rhaligiks, who saw that it was their time to retreat. A few of the bravest, and possibly craziest, members of their team stayed behind to harass the Burgjanoans. About an hour later, as they were close to being wiped out, the Burgjanoan regiments set off. Much larger than the perimeter guard, they quickly pushed through the last remnants of the Rhaligiks left behind. Operation Red Sunrise was to begin in earnest.

Meanwhile, to the West, one of Burgjano's small contingent of patrol vessels floated below the horizon of Rhaligik's western coast. Her radar sung, and caught the hull of a cargo vessel heading out of port. A stubborn captain hoped to make money selling supplies and transporting Rhaligiks from abroad back to the island when he noticed Burgjano's military closing into the island. Unfortunately for him, his timing was a little too slow. He decided that the earlier start of bombing was too hot for him, and started to flee out of port. Back aboard the patrol vessel, her small caliber gun rotated into position and began to fire. The first shot skimmed a over the cargo ship, terrifying the crew as it screamed through the air. The captain attempted to maneuver, but the cargo ship was not designed for dodging shells, and the patrol vessel had plenty of time to fire all the shells they wanted. After a few more homing shots, one screamed into the bow of the cargo ship, raining several crew members with molten shrapnel. The crew lost control and panicked, several throwing themselves off the ship and into the ocean. Another round screamed into the lower hull, the ship groaning as structure collapsed and water rushed in. The blast also hit one of the fuel tanks, starting an inferno in the bowels of the ship that quickly began to spread upwards. The captain attempted to get some control over his crew, but his efforts were halted when a shell crashed into the superstructure only three meters below him. This shell started another fire, right in the superstructure of the cargo ship. Most of those left alive on the ship were either killed by the blast, or were trapped under collapsing structure. A final shell struck the rear of the ship, opening another great rupture for water to rush inwards, and cracking the axles of the ships engines, destroying them. At this point an couple of Burgjanoan aircraft had arrived on a mission to destroy any ships left in the port. The two ships that decided to wait longer were hit by napalm and other violent burning mixtures that burned the ships. While they were arguably salvageable, the equipment in port was already too damaged. The patrol vessel ceased its attack after the aircraft told it that the ship was a burning wreck. For a few minutes, the ship drifted in the middle of the port harbor, burning brightly. Her entire deck was aflame, and her structure was either melting or buckling as she collapsed. The fires were only stopped as she fell below the waves, a clump of burned and broken metal. Only two of the original sixteen crew members survived, one of which died two days later from his burns and injuries from falling into the ocean. The residents of the port were horrified at this gratuitous violence, and few could forget the screams coming from the horrible vessel.

For the second time since the initial breakoff of the Governor of Rhaligik, troops of Burgjano marched through Rhaligik plains. The advance of the main force was slow and on foot, but ahead of them advanced expeditions were launched. Where possible, they would advance forward, pushing enemy forces into the heart of the island, while the main body relentlessly advanced behind them. This wasn't the safest way of advancing, especially considering their enemies. Already enemy pockets hid and harassed the advancing force from the rear. The command considered enduring these harrassments acceptable, since time was more important than bodies to Burgjano. In response, Burgjano punished the resistance through brutal, controversial means. Napalm and even the horrific White Phosphorous were used in gratuitous quantities. Perhaps other nations would reference the use of downright hellfire on unprepared and sometimes debatably 'civilian' targets. Even some Burgjanoan troops were horrified when they heard the horrific screams and saw molten bodies lying in little pitch black sections of burned soil. Luckily for the women and children of Rhaligik, many of the villages and towns on the island were planned to be spared at least some of the hellfire and death. Unluckily for them, they were arrested as rebels and turned over to Fábricas Reforma Social makeshift camps being set up by engineers advancing behind the main force, the first of which was attached to the FOB. Some of them would remain on FRS facilities on the island, some would be sent to FRS facilities back in Burgjano, and the least lucky would be sent to a special department of the FRS, the Programa de Treinamento de Trabalho a 'volunteer program where the misfits of society pay their dues and prepare to reenter the workforce by participating with generous companies'. Some might call it slavery, but Burgjano likes to call it punishment for rebellion.

Leaving behind smoke and fire in their wake, the Burgjanoan forces begun to come upon the core of the Traditionalists. Almost five days had passed from landing, and many people had been killed. Out of the original 720 troops who originally landed, about 30 had been killed, and 50 injured, but more soldiers had come to reinforce. The losses on the other side were higher. The Traditionalists had a hard time pulling back injured forces, so their death count was as high as 95, and only about 20 injured soldiers managed to fall back to the core. The majority of the deaths, though, were not soldiers. Their numbers were not recorded, and many were cremated in the fires, but the civilian death count was most likely about 1000. Traditionalist forces were demoralized, as they retreated into the mountains watching villages burned without mercy. Up until this point, their core areas were only lightly attacked, but now that they had started to become full with soldiers and civilians working to help the war effort or regrouping together, the Burgjanoan air force struck. Perhaps journalists around the world would report on this horrific massacre, but since previous smaller acts had gone relatively silent, Burgjano did not fear international backlash.

A group of twelve aircraft, the largest group bombing so far, flew over the burning grass of the northern plain under a half moon. As they came upon the mountains, they armed their munitions. Lookouts for the core area spotted the aircraft, and set fire to their alarm stations, and the core broke into a panic. It was too late, however, as the bombers flew over the ridge and dropped their munitions into the crowds of panicking people. The majority of the forces, set up around the core, were unharmed, but were horrified. The entire valley lit up as bright as day, napalm and white phosphorous spreading over the area in the wind. The screams of hundreds to thousands of burning men, women, and children could be heard far and wide. Entire villages and towns were drowned in flame like water. It seemed even bare rock burned in the inferno. Even worse, the Burgjanoan army began to sling white phosphorous mortars at an accelerated pace over all of the ridges, filling in any places not already engulfed by flame. The inferno lasted for hours, further aircraft passing overhead adding more hellfire to keep it going. Even ten hours later, screams could still be heard sporadically by survivors being overcome by advancing fire. Even outskirt towns of the anarchists and socialists could see the night sky lit up in the horizon. The inferno only died over a day later, along with what could be thousands of people. What was once the core of the Traditionalists was a black bare wasteland, still smoldering with remnants of the nightmarish inferno. The smell of burned flesh saturated the air, almost as a fallout. The Burgjanoans continued to advance.

Message to the Government of the Kingdom of Burgjano

Office of the
President of the Union of Gileadan States

To Dorothea Arjano, Queen of Burgjano:

As agreed between our nations during the latest meeting between the ambassador of Burgjano and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Gileadan States, elements of the UGS Task Force 50, Fifth Fleet, have taken up station around the home islands of the Kingdom of Burgjano to maintain the safety of the kingdom during its operations elsewhere. In accordance with our traditional alliance, the Union remains dedicated to the security of the Kingdom of Burgjano, and will do its utmost to prevent danger or disaster from visiting themselves upon the home islands.

However, we in the Union are in shock after learning of the actions of Your Majesty’s armed forces in Rhaligik. Deliberately targeting a civilian population is abhorred in all circumstances, but Gilead finds the use of horrific weapons such as white phosphorus on innocents to be beyond all hope of defense. Our anger is compounded by our knowledge that the people of Rhaligik have done nothing to warrant aggression of any kind from any nation, so that their slaughter can be blamed on no one at all but the government and military of Burgjano.

The office of President Addison Banks wholeheartedly condemns the barbaric and unconscionable actions of the armed forces of the Kingdom of Burgjano. While our government maintains its support for Burgjano in terms of its own safety and security, neither we nor our people can tolerate this unwholesome aggression against a civilian population, especially one near to our own borders. Any further such actions against civilian centers will necessitate a defense of Rhaligik’s innocents by the armed forces of the Union.

General Kirno looked up from the paper sent to him from the embassy in Genoa. He sighed in disappointment. This was the fundamental issue with democracy, at least to Gen. Kirno. It locks the government down, and keeps them from making sensible, rational choices. The people of Gilead were pampered, and so disillusioned of scale and the worth of a human life that they thought violence was evil. They think genocide is a horrible thing, when really it's a wonderful tool for stabilizing and cleaning a country. You can't just allow rebels to sit on your land spreading horrible, wrong ideas. It is always difficult to kill an idea. Dangerous ideas spread like a disease, and like a disease, sometimes the best way to stop it is to quarantine and kill it off. Millions of people die every year. Their current plans would only kill fifteen thousand, twenty thousand, or maybe thirty thousand. Those numbers are insignificant in the grander scheme of things. Why is genocide such a terrible thing, especially on such a small and irrelevant people, and ones that are actively rebelling? And somehow they think that using white phosphorous is a bad thing? Who cares how people die! It doesn't matter if they die in agonizing torture or a painless injection. WP is an incendiary weapon, not chemical warfare or nuclear bombardment. What if a few thousand rebels die under white phosphorous. The ideas indoctrinated in them were permanent and they could not be saved from the infection of their wrong ideas. It was their choice to rebel against the government. It is our sovereign land, we have every right to do whatever we want on it, even if it means forcing them into re-education camps where they have to labor for profits to government officials like some reasonable and rational general. Oh well, we'll play by their childish and naive rules for now. It'll cost a lot more lives and time, but we will just send more of the Guarda Patriotas in there to die for us. If we run late on cleaning up the island, then it will be their fault for slowing us down for no rational reason because a few pretty little princesses complained about nonsense like 'human rights'. How much longer will we have to appease a country so thoroughly infected with chaotic, insane ideas?

A short time later, the two operating airbases in Ralk were in mild chaos. The entire air campaign schedule was disintegrating as over half of the missions were canceled and the logistics department ran from building to building screaming obscenities rapid fire at every person they saw. "How the FUCK do you expect us to switch from incendiaries to conventional explosives and redesign the entire MOTHERFUCKING, GOAT HUMPING air campaign in any short amount of GODDAMN time at all!!!!!!!! Planes sat in hangers unfueled as the schedule was torn up and redrafted. Napalm and WP was almost haphazardly wheeled over to an out of the way corner of the pavement. A few bombing missions would slowly trickle out over the next few hours, some of which were mistakenly still holding incendiaries. This caused several of the pilots to engage in a white-hot bitching contest that further slowed the transitional process and escalated into a fistfight that resulted in 26 people being sent to hospitals, three hours of wasted time, two million dollars in equitment damage, and seventeen people being sacked. In a day or two, though, things had become to settle down. Four more people were fired due to incompetence, and much of the personnel had settled down in their usual, calmer, long-term rivalries. Less aircraft were taking part in the campaign, freeing more to patrol, and those that were were using much less napalm, very little white phosphorous (actually using it for its intended role, smoke generation), and an awful lot more typical explosives. They even targeted less non-fighting populations.

For now, the Burgjanoan armies continued at the expected pace, able to march through the Traditionalists' core easily, and began to move towards the Socialists and Anarchists, but in time they would slow down die to guerilla warfare they they weren't allowed to just burn down like before. The army purposefully avoided the center of the massacre, but the smell of burnt flesh and the wasteland nearby had a measurable impact on the Burgjanoans. Many of their soldiers swore that the government was evil to commit such a heinous crime, and several attempted to desert. The holocaust in the core was, however, effective, and knocked the Traditionalists out of the campaign as a cohesive fighting force. They would continue to harass and fight the Burgjanoans, but were so devastated that they could no longer form a cohesive army.

Phase One of Burgjano's Rhaligik Campaign was complete at the end of the first week. The Traditionalists were knocked out as a full threat to Burgjanoan advancement. Of course, this was the easy part. Burgjano's controversial bombing turned out to be as effective as had been hoped, but now this was being limited by foreign diplomatic influence. Plans were shifted, but Phase Two would continue. Phase two involved separating the majority of the army into three parts, two to the Socialists in the south, and one to the anarchists in the west. The western front would push down to the port settlement and receive reinforcements from the sea. The southern front would push more straightforwardly south to capture settlements and clear out hostile defences. Meanwhile, a few more troops had arrived through the FOB. These forces would patrol captured territory and hunt down the remnants of the Traditionalists. They would also oversee the shuffling of captured Rhaligiks to camps being deployed near the north and through the FOB to camps on Jano and Ralk. Those that resisted were taken away and put on a special list, where they were secretly scheduled to head to a secluded prison to be tortured along with other 'unrehabilitatable' political dissenters. The operation included a great number of Oficiais de Reeducação, a branch of the secret police otherwise known in hushed voices as inquisitors. The ORs were given a great deal of autonomy as to how they operated, and were trained and brainwashed much more than an average military member. The secret police have quietly done the crown's dirty work for years, suppressing dissent, preforming thought police, and occasional rounding up active dissenters like striker groups, sometimes under different names. They were, of course, much less blatant as dropping hellfire on people, and were often Burgjano's choice for quiet work.

Meanwhile, bombing runs had begun to come out regularly again. Defensible terrain was cleaned by conventional HE bombs, only occasionally being wiped by swaths of napalm. The Burgjano troops began to encounter the fringe patrols of the Anarchists and the Socialists. The Anarchists were not expected to be as difficult as the Socialists, and were expected to be closer to hillbillies with guns to the organized groups of fighters that the Socialists were expected to have at their disposal. Additionally, further reinforcements began to come in through the FOB. A few groups of regulars would be the first to arrive, to make up for the expected rise in cost, and back on Jano calls were put out for reserves of the Guarda Patriotas to be sent over and for more to be enlisted.

Meanwhile, down on the ground of Rhaligik, an armored company drove across a southern section of the Rhaligik Basin. About a mile ahead of them, a squad of M1A1Bs, an export variant of the Gileadian tank, advanced, searching for targets. Ahead of them, they spotted a concrete bunker, a perimeter outpost of the Socialists' defences. The lead tank turned its turret and fired a high-explosive shell into the bunker, ripping a hole into its side. It then opened up with its coaxial machine gun, saturating the bunker with fire as it continued to advance. Unfortunately, a rolling hill blocked its vision beyond the bunker. The tank squadron, four tanks strong, drove up to the hill. They slowed down as they neared it, and the lead tank stuck the very top of its turret over the hill. On the other side was a Socialist ambush. Before it had a chance to reverse, an RPG buried itself in the hill directly in front of the tank.

Within the tank, the gunner surveyed the ambush laid out ahead of the tank. Trenches and more bunkers dotted the landscape from the reverse of the hilline they were on, up to another hillline about half a mile away. The far hilline was cratered somewhat from earlier bombings, but much of its fortifications remained. The commander yelled out, "Ambush, ambush! Taking fire!" The gunner took a snapshot at one of the bunkers, blowing a section of wall away, and the driver put the tank into reverse. Another RPG screamed towards the tank, this time flying just over it, but the tank had fallen back behind the hill.

Artillery support was ordered from the FOB. Some of the artillery shifted from targeting a known Socialist base further south to the Basin. Calculations were made, and the artillery began to send shells downrange.

Meanwhile, back in the Basin, reinforcements had arrived from the company in the form of APCs and another tank squadron. As the artillery began to pound the far line of fortifications with HE and smoke, the tanks popped smoke over the ridge and advanced. Peeking their turrets over the ridge, they used their infrared scopes to look for targets. They began to fire their high explosives into the enemy bunkers and trenches.

Under this covering fire, the Burgjanoan APCs drove over the ridge in a close group, launching smoke as they went. An occasional RPG was fired at the tanks and APCs. One of the RPGs found its mark on one of the Burgjanoan APCs within the smoke cloud. The HEAT warhead cut a small hole through the thin armor, and instantly killed everyone inside through its plasma jet stream. The APC slowly came to a stop on the side of the advance, an ominous black circle on its front.

The rest of the APCs, though, managed to make it near the trenchline, and unloaded their troops. They let rip with their machine guns on the trenches and bunkers as the troops stormed the first trench. The resulting fighting was long and exhausting. The troops would storm the trench lines, jumping down into them under weak fire. They would then slowly and cautiously clear out the trenches. Above them, the APCs and tanks continued their suppression, occasionally receiving RPG fire. By the time the area was cleared out, almost seven hours later, a second APC was destroyed by RPG fire, 33 Burgjanoans had been killed, and 37 had been injured. As the first real combat with the Socialist's forces, this encounter would be an example for the losses in further combat with fortified Socialist positions.

By the start of the 11th day of fighting, the Burgjanoan troops were in full battle with the Socialists and the Anarchists. So far the Anarchists had shown themselves to be worse at fighting than the Traditionalists. The Traditionalists were experienced from their self-sustaining lifestyle. Many of them knew how to hunt, and the bolt-action rifle was a key aspect of the lives of many of them. They knew their land well, and as such proved themselves to be a much better opponent than the Burgjanoans had initially expected. The anarchists on the other hand, were less skilled at fighting the Burgjanoans. Unlike the Traditionalists, and especially the socialists, they were unorganized and not skilled at fighting. The battles in the east were progressing easier than expected, and the fighting was more similar to putting down the rare insurgency by 'rednecks' in the rural parts of Jano. On the southern front, however, the Socialists were putting up a strong resistance. The Socialists were well organized, and used deceptions and strategy against the Burgjanoans. Progress was slowed by guerilla warfare by retreating Socialists, and assaulting fortified and dug in bastions in strategic and tactical positions designed to limit the Burgjanoans' mobility. Now that the southern front had passed over the Rhaligik Basin and into the rolling hills of the south, the terrain was more defensible for the Socialists.

A second base had been set-up just north of the Rhaligik basin, the Basin FOB, to support the advancing troops of the southern front. Burgjanoan engineers had been making basic roads throughout the advance of the forces, and many of them converged at this FOB. Already Burgjanoan casualties were arriving in-mass. Some of the commanders and other leaders were worried by the spike of losses since engaging the Socialists, but General Kirno had ordered the Guardas up to the front to relieve some of the regular divisions. It was preferable for the casualties to be them.

Meanwhile, back on Jano, camps were being filled with captured Rhaligiks. Many of the Rhals, as they would be called, would be sent off to the south of Jano and the interior to work in direct resource gathering labor like mines, while others would be sent to Ralk and the Arterea river basin to produce food. Some of them would work in the dreadful government factories to produce the ammunition to kill their friends back on Rhaligik, but most were sent to labor on collecting raw resources, since that gave them less opportunity to commit sabotage. A large amount of the Rhals were partnered with private companies, who were given generous flexibilities regarding their treatment with almost no financial cost in terms of salaries beyond initial fees to be licensed and a small monthly bureaucratic fee. Of course, nominally, the government asked the companies to respect the Rhal's rights as prisoners, but the justice system was known to be lax in enforcing any of these rights and protections, as they always were with these sorts of things.

It was the end of the second week. Progress against the Anarchists was proceeding ahead of schedule, and that against the Socialists was behind.

In the west, fighting was less traditional, but was predominantly guerilla warfare. Unfortunately, Burgjano's previous methods would have worked well here, breaking the morale of the anarchist insurgents under the ravenous hunger cleansing hellfire. Against the Socialists, it would have united them in their struggles, but the anarchists rely on their own confidence, and their hero ideas would be useless when all they would be fighting was fire dropped safely from above. Still, the Burgjanoans did not intend to leave a single Rhaligik alive and free, and General Kirno would make sure of that. Many of the Anarchists were actually good people, and wanted to protect the families they had brought with them or had begun on the island. Thus, the first target was the populated areas near the port area. Soldiers on the flanks would move before the final push to encircle the populated areas, preventing large-scale escape. The civilians would be captured, and conscripted into the labor systems. The civilians would be traitors, so they would never again be free. Those too weak to work for the glory of the Queen would not be expected to last long, if they were even given the privilege of serving anyway.

In the south strategy was necessary. The Socialists fought hard, and together. They were more organized than the Burgjanoans, and were already taking fewer losses than them. What one might not expect, though, is that regular units would be sent west against the Anarchists (or simply pulled back into the reserves) while large numbers of conscripted Guardas were brought to the front. This, of course, caused the casualties to increase. Back home the police were rounding up communities suspected to be composed of liberals, republicanists(for a republic), socialists, etc. The poor slums of Jano were being thrown against the Socialists, quite ironically. Burgjano didn't care that their soldiers were taking substantial losses, even among the regulars. In a country of 30 million, a few hundred or thousand lost in conqur-restoring a shithole like Rhaligik was nothing. When it is to be over, they would calculate the campaign's cost on terms of BJDs(Burgjano Dollars), not lives. The important part of the campaign was showing the main islands that disorder is not tolerated, that rebellion will be crushed brutally, and possibly useful at extending Jano's strategic defensive perimeter.

In the east, the regulars were still being used. Some traditionalist remnants still clung to life, and Gen. Kirno intended to give them a rest from that struggle. Some regulars were tied up in the center and north holding captured territory against insurgency from survivors, but a small force was detached to push east to the coast.
