Operation Red Sunrise; Securing Neglected Territorial Claims

The people gathered at the table were of a comical sort. A bishop, a general, and a prince enter a Capitol conference room. Specifically, it was the Bishop of Kilojowia, General Geosif Kirno, and Prince Nikolas. All three of which were closely tied to Queen Dorthea in her preparations before ascending to the throne. If you have a sharp eye, and a knack for political intrigue, then you’d say that these three would be the most powerful men in the country save for the Queen herself. Dorthea was concerned as to the security of the country’s claimed borders, and as such made preparations for an increasing military presence on the peripherals. In the long term, these islands would expand the country’s strategic depth, and could prove valuable land for entrepreneurs. As a self-proclaimed ‘Capitalist’s Paradise’, Burgjano would make decisive actions to further plans her economic expansion.

Practically since its founding, Burgjano had made claims to surrounding islands. The major claims were to the islands of Ralk, Rholm, and Rhaligik Islands. While many of the smaller islands and Ralk have since become very obviously controlled by Burgjano, the Rholm and especially the Rhaligik islands have seen little to no direct government influence or development on them. While their story with Victorumite influences and philosophy is complicated, the Burgjano government had been content with letting their claims to these islands deteriorate somewhat thanks to the support of the Union of Gilead. The old Prince Jotlich had trusted the nearby superpower to use her navy to prevent other nations from bringing government to the anarchic island in return for Burgjano's close ties and largely exclusive economic dealings. Since Burgjano has become as economically strong as it is, her government believes it is now time to bring hard control to her Peripherals themselves. Their first target is Rhaligik. Burgjano does not have a large navy, but they only need methods of transport; they would not need many warships for this task. And besides, they were not fighting an army, they were fighting untrained native wanna-bes and anarchists who don't know the first thing about organized warfare. Sure their soldiers were not much better trained, or equipped (haha!), but they were willing to fulfil their objective the Burgjano way: Throwing the bodies of complaining draftees and undesirables at the problem until it solves itself!

As the cold, or at least colder, air of night blew over the sea, the fading red light of sunset may have given away a strange sight to natives with sharp eyes. For most of them, seeing a ship was a rare sign of the Gods, and one not exactly associated with bountiful hunts, and for some who came from the northern villages, it was the capitalists of the north interfering again with their anarchistic paradise. Still, one of the native tribals thought he saw the sight of the ill omen. He tried to warn his people, but as the only one who had seen it, he was ignored. Besides, the latest hunts were actually relatively bountiful for once, so such an ill omen could not have come, could it?

Men and women ran through the pockets of forest, babies cried, and the sound of panic roared constantly in the background. The Anarchists' core was in terrible existential danger, but there was nowhere to go for the many people who lingered when scouts came with warnings of a Burgjanoan encirclement. A day earlier a Burgjanoan mechanized division broke out from the advancing lines, and led a rush to the sea. Moving quickly, they managed to cut off the Anarchists' primary core successfully trapping most of its population. It had finally begun to dawn on the population that they were trapped, and many had begun to panic. Many of the civilians armed themselves, hoping to at least die fighting rather than suffer whatever vile tortures Burgjano had planned for them. Many others hid in their homes, struggling to accept their doom. Many others lost control of themselves, and panicked, looting their friends and neighbors. Overall, the population descended into, well, anarchy. The defenders found it hard to hold off the Burgjanoans while the civilians behind them lost control. This gave the Burgjanoans the opportunity to surge forward, finally entering the populated areas and encountering the civilians.

The result of this encounter was wildly chaotic. The majority of the people did not want to fight, since they didn't want to risk their life, but many did. The Burgjanoans entered the 'town' two weeks and two days after landing on the island. A large number of the Burgjanoan forces would be tied up on this area, as the area would resist the occupation strongly for a long time. It would take at least a week for the area to be secured satisfactorily, and another afterwards for the entire population to be rounded up and distributed. After just a single day, 115 Burgjanoan troops would be dead to the town's resistance alone.

On the eastern front, Burgjanoan forces advanced, suppressing resistance from guerrillas. At first they focused on the coasts, where it would be harder to put up resistance. Still, progress was not blitzkreig speed, due to the small numbers of forces committed here. Most of the Burgjanoan forces were being dedicated to grinding down the Socialists' defenses. On both the Western and Southern fronts, progress slowed down as troops regrouped for what General Kirno hoped to be a hard push to break organized resistance, especially that of the Socialists.

It was now the end of the third week. Definate progress had been made, but the Burgjanoan advance had begun to visibly slow down. The push on the southern front had begun a few days ago, and managed to reach the sea and cut off a section of the Socialists, but they had managed to react and pulled out most of their forces there, saving their war efforts substantially. Some of their forces were successfully encircled, but most of them were rear guard purposefully remaining behind to allow the rest of their forces to pull back. As a result, the encirclement attempt was considered to be a failure, and now Burgjano had to accept a slowed down and costly assault on the Socialists' core. The east and west, however, brought good news. The Traditionalist remnants in the east were caught and annihilated, resulting in Burgjano occupying all of their land on the main island. General Kirno would now have to begin planning an assault on Rhaligik's minor islands, which thankfully were small save for the largest minor island, Poucia.

In the west, the Burgjanoans had made major strides. A regular mechanized regiment had pushed around the coast and had begun to move southwards to encircle the Anarchists from the west, north, and east. The Anarchists had begun to fall back, exchanging space for time, and taking up a defense in depth strategy. They were falling back to their secondary core, along with most of their population. They had created plans to fall back to their secondary, and hole up in its defensible terrain. The area was hilly and mildly wooded, and they would have multiple lines of defense before their last position in a village atop a tall hill. There they would have to make their last stand.

The Burgjanoans were encountering problems in the meantime. The entire island was prone to guerilla warfare, especially in the Traditionalists' former territory. Ambushes by survivors were common, and the occupied areas required a sizable amount of the troops in the campaign for now. The Burgjanoans hope to slowly return forces back to Jano over time as the survivors' numbers are depleted, but it would take time and would required the use of regular forces: Guardas units would be too dangerous to be kept idle on the island. For now the military continued to throw Guardas conscripts towards the island, but were also beginning to send regular conscripts as well. The losses during the campaign were growing large, already estimated to be between 4,000-7,000, primarily Guardas, but this only resolved General Kirno to finish the job. Currently the rest of the high government officials, such as Nikolas and Dorthea, agreed.

The fourth week. A bit over halfway through the schedule Gilead sent halfway through the first week. Once more Burjganoan forces had been slowing down, but the end was in sight! The Anarchists are fighting their last stand, and so are the Traditionalist survivors on the island Poucia. Even the Socialists are hanging on by a rope, their forces holding not far from their core.

In the west, the Anarchists draw their last breaths. When the mechanized regiment pushed from the west, the Anarchist forces broke and fell many positions back. In the process, two of their last few fighting groups were pinned down and encircled outside of their 'fortress'. As a result they are trapped and will soon be annihilated. The rest of their forces pulled back successfully to their secondary, and have set up for their last stand in the hill. Hopefully enough troops are in the west to assault it quickly and effectively, but Burgjanoan forces are spread thin on the island.

In the east, Kirno managed to pull down a few ships to carry troops and slowly cleared out the minor islands over the week. Eventually, it was time to attack Poucia. The forces were transported over the channel from Rhaligik, and managed to clear out resistance quickly. The survivors on the island were cut off long ago, and were running low on supplies. The last Traditionalists would be subdued soon!

In the south, of course, progress was harder. The Socialist forces still fought hard against Burgjanoan advances. As they were pushed back they only gained morale and vigor. Every Socialist soldier, down to the lowly infantryman, adamantly refused to let their core to fall to the Burgjanoans. As a result, a pair of mechanized regiments were sent on the east and west coasts of the peninsula, to flank around the core and loop back around behind the Socialists, followed by much of the infantry and Guardas that were left available on the southern front. The battle for the Socialsts' core would be hard fought.

It was now three days into the fifth week, and the campaign in Rhaligk was over. Four days ago, Burgjanoan troops in the east reached the sea, fully clearing out most of the Traditionalist elements on the minor islands and had since been occupying and mopping up any survivors hiding in the shadows. Three days ago, the Anarchists were pushed back atop their fortress hill, driven back by a pair of Guardas units supported by a mechanized regiment. They attempted to hold their last stand atop the hill, but the combination of bombing and pushing by the Burgjanoans managed to break the defense they had hastily prepared after just seven hours, leaving the last of the Anarchist civilians under Burgjanoan control. Finally, a day ago, the Burgjanoan forces managed to flank behind the socialists' core and attacked from the rear. Under attack from all sides, it was only a matter of hours before the Burgjanoans broke through in the south, pushing northward into their core. When the northern defenses noticed the break, they attempted to turn some of their forces back around to stop the flank attack, which gave the Burgjanoan forces in the north the opportunity to break the last cohesive Socialst defenses. The resulting chaos took all day before the Burgjanoans cleared out most of the significant Socialist units, and began to occupy their core.

Of course, this is not the end of Burgjanoan occupation of Rhaligik, many tasks needed to be done to manage the captured Rhaligiks and secure the island from insurgency by survivors, which could take a while, but Operation Red Sunrise was complete. Many of the Guardas and other conscripts were beginning to head north to return home. The logistics following the operation would also be hefty, involving the movement of a thousands of captured Rhaligiks to complexes back on the other islands or to various places on Rhaligik. While much of the war-time logistical structures would be dismantled and shipped back, much of the logistical infrastructure would remain to supply the occupation and rebuilding of infrastructure on Rhaligik. On the fourth day of the fifth week, when the Queen would announce the end of Operation Red Sunrise and the annexation of the island, the new Governor of Rhaligik, a man named Fabião, stepped foot on the island. For the first time in many decades, the Governorship of Rhaligik was under the Crown of Burgjano.
