ATTN: SAROS
MASTROPA AND GORVIKIA
Posted Image Foreign Department of Austiana
To the Honorable Leaders of Saros, Mastropa and Gorvikia

Dearest Leaders,

The Republic of Austiana is under siege by her southern adversaries, Cielo and Gliegen. In our time of need, we carefully and respectfully ask for the nations of Saros and Gorvikia to lend a hand in the defence of Austiana and her people.

I ask that a representative delegation from both of your countries arrive in Castratene as soon as possible for a formal discussion on current matters. All visiting delegates shall have transport, security, accomodation and all other matters dealt with by the Foreign Department prior to their arrival.

I must note that President Powell is presently in Oretio, Cielo, meeting with the Queen of that nation. As a result, he may be unable to attend this meeting and therefore we respectfully inform you that heads of state are welcome, but not required at this meeting. Rather, this meeting is being conducted by the Chief Counsel and the Foreign Department.

Furthermore, the Republic of Austiana requests that Saros and Gorvikia send any available military assets and personnel to Austiana as soon as possible, as conflict may very well be right around the corner. This of course should be done on the basis of what each of your nations thinks is reasonable and is prepared to deploy. Further details regarding this matter will be discussed formerly at our meeting.

For your efforts in meeting in Castratene and your support in conflict, your nations shall be exorbitantly rewarded with land, finance, future unconditional Austianese military support and of course the sense of satisfaction one would gain from defeating the imperialist Western League in conflict.

With the greatest of respect and gratitude,

Whitmore grew frustrated at Voiotias continued ability to stagnate conversation with his endless questions and his lack of actual contribution to the conference. Furthermore, the reluctance to speak or commit to anything particular suggested by Whitmore by the other delegates only further enraged the Chief Counsel. Impatience, anger and the feeling of betrayal upon hearing the news from Cielo rallied within Whitmore a sense of outrage that he rarely felt.

Abruptly, he slammed his fist on the table and stood up aggressively, looking at the shocked delegates around the table.

"I have hereby concluded this conference is no longer worth pursuing." Whitmore proclaimed, loudly and with fiery eyes darting across the room, "I am afraid to say the provisions made to get you gentlemen here today were foolish expenses made by the state of Austiana that we shall never reclaim. None of you men present any actual value to our nation. We called upon you in our time of need with humility and respect, and yet you all arrive in our nation's capital with a disdain for our government and solely selfish motivations. I am disgusted at the demeanour and attitudes of many of you. Not a single delegate present presented any constructive manner to deal with the issues, only the mere and meek rejection of every single reasonable and rational proposition suggested by the Austianese government."

Whitmore waved to security personnel and Austianese officials. The Chief Counsel did not feel at all bad about lumping in the more pleasant delegates from Saros and Gorvikia with those from Mastropa. Nonetheless, their demeanour had instilled within Whitmore a sense of insecurity and mildly justified anger.

"Your diplomatic visas are to be renounced by the government." Whitmore glared at the men, still seated, "Prior to this conference I would have thought that to make a threat to all you present that our government would be inclined to join the Western League to merely spite you would be something abhorrent and unthinkable. But with recent developments, and in light of the offensive and obscene behaviour of most of you, I think such a thought is rather appealing. You all ought to be embarassed. It is not my concern if this diplomatic incident results in the cessation of relations between out nations. I am inclined to respect the people of Saros, Gorvikia and Mastropa and their appropriate heads of state. The conduct of each of you is unbecoming of your roles as official representatives."

As the various delegates began to rise in their seats and leave, ushered by security and Austianese officials, Whitmore added.

"You shall all leave our nation at once!" The Chief Counsel ordered, satisfied with his rant, "And I do hope to never have to meet or see any of you individually on our sovereign territory, or in yours, ever. Shame on you all, and good riddance!"

As the flurry exited the room and into the various motorcades, Whitmore's adrenaline slowly subsided and the Chief Counsel approached the telephone and dialled the number for the Foreign Secretary.

"Davis, yes, it's Whitmore." He began, "We need an immediate readjustment of our foreign policy."

The Real Slim Shady

Bergfulk felt his blood boil at the childish display by Whitmore as he and the Gorvikian delegation rose from their seats. His normally calm demeanor was now gone, and he had now taken on the characteristics of the Chancellor.

"I would like to thank for you sufficiently wasting all of our time here, Chief Counsel," said Bergfulk, sharply, as he grabbed his coat. "You ask us, no, beg us, 'Please oh please, protect us from the threat of Gliegen and Cielo! We are wholly incompetent and incapable of defending ourselves!'" Bergfulk said in a mocking tone, "To be frank, I believe I speak for the Chancellor that it's a victory in our book when such a cesspool decides to cut ties with the Republic.

"Do not ask of anything from Gorvikia again, ever," continued Bergfulk. He began to turn to leave, but stopped himself, "And, Chief Counsel, one last thing."

Bergfulk stepped up close to Whitmore, "If, after today, you choose to strengthen ties with....how should I put it, less desirable nations, my best advice for you would be to tread lightly."

The Foreign Minister stepped back, quickly glancing at the Sarosian and Mastropan delegations before exiting with the Gorvikian delegation before exiting the building and entering a black SUV in his motorcade. He pulled out his phone as the motorcade pulled away, dialing Chancellor Merkhov's residence.

"Emondtos, it's Davod. We have a situation."

Kiryx Voiotias stared at the chief counsel for a moment. “My first impressions were obviously correct,” he said finally. “You suffer from a complete and utter lack of direction.” The kiryx got to his feet and shrugged on his jacket, unconcerned about the armed guards that had arrived to escort him out of the room. “I second Minister Bergfulk: We came here at your invitation, after promises made in your name. We asked for clarification about your aims, only to confront a policy reversal and the scrapping of the one solid plan you had in hand. I’m afraid that other nations cannot do your thinking for you… well, unless you enjoy the thought of becoming someone else’s province as much as you hoped to make Solterra your own.”

The kiryx turned away—he doubted that Whitmore had even bothered listening, given his apparent rage—and walked briskly through the door of the meeting room, tailed by Austianese security forces. Exiting the building, he glanced around in the hopes of finding and speaking with Minister Bergfulk privately, only to see the Gorvikian vehicles pulling away from the curb. “Damn,” he muttered to himself, turning toward the Mastropan diplomatic car that was patiently waiting for him. He waved it off for now and reached into his jacket pocket for a phone. “Chrysanthi,” he said as soon as he put it to his ear, “please alert the Gorvikian Embassy that they may be given quick orders to relocate—as will you and the rest of ours, for that matter—and also ask that they put us in contact with Foreign Minister Bergfulk before he arrives at the airport. Please ask that he delay his flight until we have spoken face-to-face. With luck, I will have company when I arrive at the airport as well.”

“Yes, Kyrie,” the woman on the other end agreed. “Is there anything else?”

Kiryx Voiotias frowned as he turned to face the door of the building, waiting for the Sarosian delegate, Magister Vaharis. “Please alert Epistatis Mesolongias that Austiana is… unreliable. Chief Counsel Whitmore has just severed diplomatic ties with us and threatened to join the Western League.”

“…I will certainly let him know.”

Magister Vaharis stood last, after the rest of the delegates, looking at Whitmore. The young men he had brought, struck by this unexpected turn of events, rose slowly with him. At first, Vaharis's expression was serious, but before long the sheer levity of the situation reached him. He laughed openly at Whitmore.

Vaharis did not have much of a flair for the arts, but he did remember one monologue from a famous Cieloan play, which translated well enough into the language they shared with their northern neighbors. Adapting it to the situation at hand, Vaharis told Whitmore:

"Many a thousand widows
Shall this Whitmore's mock, mock out of their dear husbands;
Mock mothers from their sons, mock castles down;
And some are yet ungotten and unborn
That shall have cause to curse Whitmore's scorn.
Your jest will savour but of shallow wit,
When thousands weep more than did laugh at it."

With that, Vaharis left. He made a mental note to contact the Gorvikian foreign service and apologize on behalf of Saros for asking them to attend this event, which ended up being a waste of time. That said, even if a waste of time, it at least gave the three nations time to prepare the necessary response, which Whitmore seemed not to anticipate.

In the halls exiting the building, Vaharis found Kiryx Voiotias waiting for him. In his usual style, Vaharis jumped right in.

"Kiryx Voiotias. I must apologize for the role Saros had in bringing you here, to this disorganized rout of a nation, where our time was wasted and we were insulted to our faces. All for trying to help these poor, stupid bastards, too. Well, this has been troubling. Clearly our nations will need to confer further on this matter. This dishonor cannot go unanswered. Not by dignified nations."

Indeed, Vaharis knew that, when word of this indignity reached the ears of Lord Septish, the young lord would react with anger. Whitmore's childish actions today, Vaharis knew, would reverberate farther than he could possibly have anticipated.

“No apology is required on Saros’s account, I’m sure,” Voiotias replied easily. “The instabilities of this strange government seem to run deep; while one might have predicted at the beginning of the day that this meeting might be a waste of time, I don’t think anyone could have imagined that Austiana would toss its only friendships away in such a childish tantrum. One wonders if this ‘chief counsel’ actually has the authority to do it.” The kiryx shrugged. “It is no matter, I suppose. At the very least, we know that the government of Austiana cannot be expected to fulfill its responsibilities.”

He eyed Magister Vaharis seriously. “On the other matter you bring up, however, I completely agree. I have already asked the Mastropan Embassy to contact the Gorvikians, including Minister Bergfulk, and ask that they meet us at the airport. If your government would permit, I would be pleased if we could continue this particular summit in more pleasant climes… Council City, perhaps?” Voiotias allowed himself to smile slightly. “Which isn’t to say that we’ll probably have most of the preliminaries taken care of on the plane ride itself, if we travel together.”

The kiryx motioned toward the still-waiting Achaian diplomatic car, where the driver had gotten out and opened the back seat door. “Would you care to join me, Magister?”

Magister Vaharis could not help but let out something of a laugh as he and made his way toward the car. "You know, Kiryx, they warn small children against getting in cars with Achaians. But I think such an arrangement would be most fitting." Vaharis shoed his attendants away, onto their own flight home, as he entered Voiotias' car.
