(RU) That concludes the broadcast of today's session of the Floor and I am joined now by our political correspondent Mr. Bur Vicht. Bur, hello (BV) Hello (RU) Welcome to the PIRgov studio. So we saw a fair bit of outrage from quite a few Representatives there after Veritas made their announcement, is there any real credibility to what they are trying to do? (BV) It is an interesting proposal and it is certainly one that a few Representatives feel strongly about, both for and against, and none more so than the Minister of Education, because of course she has provided the bill with the necessary House endorsement to get it voted on (RU) So with Iyala Duf's endorsement in mind, do you think that despite the vocal opposition the bill has a chance of being passed? (BV) I think it really depends on what happens over the next few days, so the Representatives have time to think it over after the initial shock, and to weigh up the public reaction to the announcement, in the coming week we will get a much clearer picture of where this bill is going, of who thinks what about it, and of course of its chances (RU) Did you catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister's reaction during the announcement, I think we can just play it for you again now, here it is (BV) Yes, yes, raising his eyebrows in almost disbelief but I am not convinced that this is a disapproving reaction, he seems interested in what Veritas are proposing and given the hardline position of the Reformists, particularly after they introduced the Democratic Restructuring Act back in March, he might even get behind the bill (RU) What would that mean for the bill's chances? (BV) It would massively improve them, to have the Prime Minister and a House member both endorsing the bill it's popularity among the Reformists would skyrocket and of course looking at the numbers, there are almost five times more Reformists on the Floor than there are Veritas, it would be a fantastic position to be in (RU) What about a public reaction? Is it too early to comment on something this divisive? (BV) Well, yes, immediately you can see this is going to cause big waves in public opinion even if it doesn't get passed the announcement alone, you can straight away see what kind of camps are going to be forming, you'll have the hard reform lot saying it will improve the country, you'll have the purist democrats saying it's a miscarriage of democracy and that's not even considering the over 65s, the actual affected party in all of this, I don't think they're going to take it lying down at all (RU) And looking to the future, if the bill is passed and if it isn't? (BV) In both cases of the bill getting passed and not the first noticeable effect will be on the 2018 Electoral Month, where if it fails to pass we will see a massive swing, certainly away from Veritas and, if the Prime Minister or other Reformists endorse it we will see a swing away from them as well, the Reformists will lose ground. If the bill does pass then the swing in the larger parties might be mitigated slightly and we'll see the smaller parties, particularly the Conservatives and the People's Party, losing support because of course they will have lost their voters (RU) Okay, Bur, thank you, if we could go back now to my initial question regarding the credibility of the bill, is there any possibility of legal challenge or perhaps setting negative precedents? (BV) There is no real legal or legislative precedent already in place for proposals such as this so this really will be pioneering if it is passed, and yes you're right that could be negative, it could open the door to similar acts that restrict the franchise more and more. The only thing that comes to mind as a possible trendsetter for this bill is the second qualification to the Government Voting Charter, back in the 1920s, which lowered the age of enfranchisement for women to 16, to be the same as for men, but obviously that operates at the other end of the spectrum to this bill. But there is also the possibility of future qualification to this bill, if it is passed, it could be a very temporary piece of legislation just to get us out of this sort of period of unease, it's not even been 2 years since the end of the Autarchy yet so there is still some work to do to shake that oppression off (RU) Thank you very much, Bur Vicht our political correspondent. If you are just joining us our main headline today is Veritas' announcement of their planned Political Progression Preservation Act, which proposes to disenfranchise all over 65s currently eligible to vote, allegedly to expedite Oleiwin's departure from the shadow of the Assel Regime. The proposal has received the endorsement of House member Iyala Duf, the Minister of Education, and so will be voted upon by the Floor on an as yet unannounced date. You're watching PIRgov |
