Okay guys, this is the big one. The game we have been waiting for quite some time. the question on everyone's mind is, "Does it live up to the Hype?" Let's get to it, shall we? Shovel Knight First off, Hype is an interesting thing. We all expect something different out of it, and usually it ends in disappointment. I will admit that my expectations for this game were greater than the actual game. But I'm actually not disappointed. For the actual game is quite good. Gameplay: I love how this game plays out. First the tutorials treat you with respect, as the entire game gradually teaches you how to overcome obstacles. Second I love the emphasis on the shovel. The shovel is the main weapon. While you do find other items, they all deplete your limited magic meter. So secondary item use is limited. Third there are multiple armors. But they vaguely change the gameplay. If anything they just slightly tweak it, while keeping everything the same. What this means is that even with all upgrades you are not that different than the standard shovel. Level Design: Each level has it's own gimmick, visuals, play style, and enemies. This makes each level amazing in it's own way, while keeping the gameplay fresh. It never felt like I was playing too much of the same thing. On the contrary, there was so much variety. Music: Amazing! Characters: Not many in this game. But they all had a nice charm to them. Bosses: The bosses had randomized patterns and very different styles... Yet my main problem is how easy they were to defeat. I mean the biggest challenge is avoiding their randomized attacks. The fights themselves are a walk in the park. I'm not necessarily complaining. Just that I wanted a better challenge out of them. Story: Hmm... hard to say anything without spoiling. Spoiler: click to toggle I felt the story was very original. Definitely better than the average "Maiden in Distress" there are many parts which give off strong emotions. 8-Bit Glory? No... This game is hailed as an NES style classic, yet I disagree. The game was excellent in what it did and how it did it. There are many references to NES classics. And it truly borrowed from the classics without blatantly ripping them off. All of this is good. But the game looked more 16-bit than 8-bit. While the controls were simple, it felt like a new game and not like an old game. The level of difficulty was high like most NES games which gave it an NES illusion. In the end, the game is more like an NES 2.5. Which I feel worked in it's favor. Replay Value: Tons of it. Not only are there tons of secrets to find, but there is a new game+ mode, and tons of achievements. Finally I'd like to say that the games 3D effects look amazing. I don't normally play with 3D on, but for Shovel knight I made an exception. So I give this game the score of 10/10. Why so high? Strictly because no matter how hard i thought about it, I couldn't come up with one flaw. Great Job Yacht Club Games. i can't wait to see what game you bring us next.
