When I was a wee little kid, my parents taught me never to look a gifted horse in the mouth. And well, that lesson applies a lot to my review. Mighty Gunvolt was absolutely FREE. It didn't cost a thing. So while reviewing this game, I will keep that in mind and factor it into my opinions. Mighty Gunvolt features stiff controls, With levels that are short and uninspired. Basically it's an NES game... just not a very good one. If it were released in the 80's, It would never become a classic. Now that's not to say the game is bad. The boss battles were decent, even if one of the bosses was an 8-Bit hentai tentacle monster. The 8 bit graphics and chiptunes are fairly impressive. There was a typo at the end scren, unsure if accidental or intentional. The characters are a nice feature. You can choose between 3 playable characters, each with similar but not identical abilities. Overall the gameplay is similar to megaman. And you won't use the different abilities much. Nonetheless here they are:
The slightly different playstyles allow for different strategies, kinda reminded me of SMB2. However the main problem is that such potential is wasted. As I said before the levels are uninspired, and they are so short and easy. The game is over before you know it. Even with 3 playable characters there isn't much replay value. This is most likely because they knew it would be free. It feels like a game that someone programmed in their basement. Basically the game is just incomplete. If they were to go back and create better levels, then this game might be worth it. If they went back and added secrets that can be collected we would have more replay value. If they added some Co-oP mode and a hard difficulty I would be in heaven. But Mighty Gunvolt as it is right now, it feels like a demo in Alpha state. But it's free. So I'm not complaining. Still I feel like this game should be free for everyone. Now Inti Creates has stated that they plan DLC levels, and that might turn the tables. No information has been given on how the DLC will work. However I can see this as being a "Free-to-Play" game. Where you pay for decent levels. Or maybe not. Maybe they will give the DLC for free to current owners, and charge everyone else for a FULL game. I won't give this game a number rating. The reason being the game is just not finished. Maybe in the future I'll come back and continue this. But for now Mighty Gunvolt is a game that we received for free, and for that reason I will not look a gifted horse in the mouth. Well it seems we have info on the DLC for this game. DLC will be $2.99 and will include 4 new levels. But does that mean everyone will be able to purchase this game? Will people who own the 1.0 version get a discount for the DLC? Who knows, but it seems my guess of paying for decent levels seems to be the case. |

UPDATE: I figured out that the DLC could be bought by accessing you eshop download history, updating the game, then using the in-game store to purchase it. So without further ado, I shall review the DLC content. Sigh... The DLC suffered from the same issues as the main campaign. The level design does seem a bit more thought out this time. Yet the levels are too short and generic. I was able to do a speed run through them on my first run. Also it seems that they all use recycled assets, except for the Highway level. The bosses are still pretty OP, and that is perhaps the only real challenge from this game. The DLC does add new enemies, but mainly uses campaign enemies. Perhaps the best part is that you get two new bosses from Mighty No.9: the fire boss and scissor boss. So it's kinda like getting a free taste of that game. Well you know, if by free you mean $2.99 for DLC and $3.99 for the full game. Also it seems that Beck got a few sound FX and animation updates. So yeah. Do I feel the money is worth it? Uhm... no. And yet, there are worse games on the eShop for that same price. So it's not the worse use of your money, but it's definitely not the best either. |
