It's silly and sad to see this game just being ripped apart. It's a freaking spinoff for crying out loud. If anything this just might mean we don't get ANY Metroid games cause "fans" will flip their shit if they don't get exactly what they want.
I agree with you, Cj, and as a long time Metroid fan, I am ashamed to be associated with the asshats bashing this game.

fuck, dude
if anything the fact this spinoff exists at all is proof that nintendo acknowledges metroid exists and wants to expand on its universe

Coming from a Kotaku interview with Reggie Fils-Aime...

On negative reaction to Nintendo’s unveiling of a new Metroid Prime spin-off game:

Fils-Aime: “Here’s what I would state: we know what our fans want. We will also push the envelope in developing something that we know is high-quality and that we know will deliver in the marketplace. The best example I can give you of this, and I think you will appreciate it, is Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. Remember when that art style was first shown. The uproar from the Zelda community was intensely negative. If there had been social media then, there probably would have been a petition to make that game go away.”

Totilo: “I guess you’ve seen the Metroid petition.”

Fils-Aime: “So, the game is developed, becomes one of the most beloved games of all time, one of the most highly-rated games of all time, so I use that example to say: ‘We know what we’re doing, trust us, play the game and then we can have a conversation.’”

Totilo: “And I’m not... Next Level Games is making it, and I believe in them, because Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon is fantastic. Mr. Tanabe has overseen many a great game. I think the question for me, which is a little different than what I’ve seen from some of our readers, I’m not so convinced that this game is going to be bad just because it doesn’t look like what I want. But my curiosity is: Do they [Nintendo] know that people still want a Samus Aran adventure?

Fils-Aime: “Absolutely.”

Totilo: “I was surprised there was no messaging that said, ‘Don’t worry, we know you’re interested in this as well....’”

Fils-Aime: “Look, we know that the fans want a straight Samus Aran game. We also know that the best way to launch a game like that is to surprise and delight them, to give them a launch date, in an environment like this let them play it vs. what other companies do which is to announce a project that you may not see for five, six years. It’s just not the way we do things. We know the community wants to see a straight-up Metroid game. We know it.”

The comparison to the Wind Waker backlash seems to fit. While I wasn't into Zelda games at that point, I heard some horror stories about the huge hatred for that reveal. The bad news for Federation Force is that it's much easier for hate to spread around and stick than back in the Wind Waker days. Hopefully soon we'll get some more gameplay videos or details that will calm the masses.

Wind Waker is a perfect comparison. Hopefully it really is just the internet being loud.

I agree, Zelda WW is a pretty good compassion, except that WW is a main game and this is a spin-off, so the people hating it are just small minded Retards... and I hope this game gets taken very seriously and has a lot of depth to it, if not, then it sells enough to warrant a sequel where they can expand on it.

Either way, I can't wait to play, between sessions of Fallout 4 that is, :P

The WW point is a pretty solid one, and ill straight up admit, i was one of the very bitter fans that was put off by it after having OOT and MM. Even after playing through it and enjoying it, i was still bitter, thinking the whole time through "is this what zelda is going to be from now on?". Now after cooling down for years, ive come around to it, and i enjoyed WWHD far more then i ever did the original version. So in some way i know where the hate comes from i suppose, but even then i was a kid, and now i can look back and be grateful that even though i wasnt ok with the art direction, i didnt let it stop me from enjoying an experience that turned out to be a great one. Hopefully people calm down, and prehaps re examine their stance on this, although i dont have much faith in the metroid fanbase, they still havent even let other m go (i enjoyed that one myself regardless of the hate it got).

LOL, pretty funny Vid, CJ. But in all seriousness, there is actual petitions to stop the release of Federation Force. Those Fuckers better not cause it to be stop, I am very interested in seeing how it develops as a game, and a spin-off Metroid game at that.

Coming from a Eurogamer interview with Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe...

"[Metroid Prime: Federation Force] is an attempt to expand the Metroid universe. As you can play with up to four players it wouldn't make sense to play as four Samus characters! The game will be focused on co-op, working together as a team with up to four players. And obviously it is available as a single-player experience as well. You have the option to choose load-outs for you to bring to the battle. However, you have to consider that there will be limitation for how much can carry as a character. If you carry the Super Missile then you're classed as a Warrior type. If you have lots of Repair Capsules you could focus on being a Healer type.

I've always been thinking about having a battle between the Galactic Federation and Space Pirates. The Metroid Prime series fits between Metroid 2 and Super Metroid, as you may be aware. So it falls under that same timeline, but looking at it from a different perspective. You may be able to see Samus in the game...

It's set on a planet which the Galactic Federation used, way back when. The plot involves a struggle to retake that planet. You find out that Space Pirates now reside there and are building a weapon to use against the Federation. Players will fight the Space Pirates to stop them.

Ideally I thought this game might be released around the same time as the New 3DS but it got a little delayed... It was begun around the time that I learned that the New 3DS was in development due to the inclusion of a C-pad, which would be perfect for an FPS."

After Metroid Prime Hunters, I don't think I could go back to stick aiming. Hopefully they have an option for the MPH controls :P .

Yeah, I hope so as well, I like using the Stylus to aim.

Stylus to aim sounds fun. Like I did Star Fox Command, I'd probably bring out the 3DS Stand for such a control scheme :P

The Stand doesn't work well with the 'new' 3DS XL, it keeps slipping, so you'll have to find a way to make it work. I use it when ever I am not playing my mine.

Also Stylus controls are pretty nifty, I enjoyed MPH more with it.

I'm surprised we've heard so little on this game since E3. I wonder if the negative fan reaction has anything to do with it. Hope we get some new info soon.

They probably delayed the game in secret, to add in a single player story as Samus, the plot written by Team Ninja developers.

Website open!

http://metroidprime.nintendo.com/

Also a few more details.

Quote:

Features:

Up to 4 players* take on a variety of co-op missions in this first-person, sci-fi shooter set in the Metroid Prime™ universe
Work solo or together as a team to clear out enemy-infested bases and complete objective-based missions against the Space Pirate menace

Customize your Mech with MODs and subweapons to define your role on the team

Also includes Metroid Prime™: Blast Ball, a 3-on-3 sci-fi sport in the Metroid Prime™ universe where players literally shoot the ball into their opponents’ goal to score

Aim using the Nintendo 3DS™ system’s gyroscope or use the C-Stick on the New Nintendo 3DS system for dual-analog control

Darn, no option for touch screen aiming like in Hunters :( . The gyro should be fine though, since it doesn't appear you'll be moving all that fast.
