What do you get when you take Grand Theft Auto and blend it with an overload of 80's and 90's references? Only one of the greatest/weirdest games out there. It's hard to explain this game, other than "My childhood on steroids". Let's dive right in. Retro City Rampage DX Story: 10/10 Once again it's hard to explain this game's story. It's like a parody, or compilation of parodies, of everything 80's. And for that it's a 10/10. But basically our main character "The Player" is sent back in time, presumably to the late 80's or early 90's, and he has to figure out a way back home by collecting pieces of a time machine. He collect's them by going on random missions that has him living thru the best Pop Culture/gaming parodies of that era. From being batman, to swimming thru the NES TMNT Dam, to going on missions with Solid Snake, going to the "saved by the bell" high school, and working with the ghost busters. It's random, it's weird, it's funny, and often times NSFW. Yet it works. It's a love letter to those of us who grew up in that time, and I loved every second of it. Gameplay: 7/10 The game play is simple & basic. And for an 80's inspired game that's all you really need. You get an inventory for weapons similar to zelda games. Except that if you die outside of a mission then you will lose your entire inventory. Still the weapons are varied, the vehicles are many, and the missions are diverse. Your missions can be anything from fighthing the ninja turtles, to cleaning up a night club, to competing in a game show. It may not sound like much, but the dialogue and humor is on point. Level design: 8/10 The game doesn't really have levels. It has missions. The missions do often contain mission-only areas. And like everything else in the game, it's full with references and trivia. Yet these areas do pose a good challenge. So overall they are pretty good. Characters: 9/10 The characters are pretty 2 Dimensional. But they are HILARIOUS. Keep in mind they are all parodies. So the point here isn't to get you to understand them, but rather to make fun of pre-existing characters. And boy did they deliver. So again, they are not memorable characters, just excellent parodies. Music: 10/10 This game has a ton of music. And it's all amazing. Many of these tracks are references to pre-existing music. Such as the Megaman 2 intro theme, the 60's batman theme, and many others. But also has many original tracks. Many composers, great music. Bosses: 6/10 Not many bosses. And the ones are a bit overpowered. But it's fine. It adds to the random nature of the game. Abilities: 10/10 Too many to name the all. But here are some of them: Guns, swords, explosives, batarangs, super stomps, P-Wing, Robocop, Batman, Hi-jacking cars/tanks/helicopters, etc. Replay Value: 10/10 Because of the amazing dialogue and challenges. I find myself returning to this game over and over again. Plus the free roaming is great to see the references built into the geography. Overall: 9.5/10 This game delivers. And I recommend it to everyone... everyone who lived thru the mid 80's to late 90's. If you are currently a teenager, you may not get the jokes. So this game may not be for you. But if you are like me, then this game is not only fun, it's nostalgic. Definitely a must buy. Edited by Greymon57, Sep 15 2016, 01:00 PM.
