Last summer I reviewed the original Witch&Hero where I mentioned it's one of my favorite and most played games on the 3DS, and also on the toilet. So when I found out there was a sequel on the eshop, I jumped on it immediately.

Witch & Hero II

Story: 5.5/10 I'll give them credit. This game has more story than it's predecessor. But it's still a game that is not too heavy on the story. Essentially one year after the first game the Witch and the Hero fight some Demon which encases them in a magic crystal. Of course it would be a magic crystal, it's video games. Some unspecified time later a new duo, Little Witch & Little Hero, hear the legend of the first Witch & Hero and decide to rescue them.
The sequel does have more cutscenes.

Gameplay: 9.5/10 Okay the gameplay is mainly the same as the original with a few small tweaks that make a noticeable different. The main difference is that the witch can now move around. While that alone may not sound like much, it changes everything. Monsters now move faster and retreating the witch and navigating her through the heards is key and requires more complex strategies. The Little Witch can instantly open chests by opening them. It also made this an unintentional Co-op game. I mean you can still do single player, but co-op is more fun. Another change made is in the Little Witch's spells. She has two new spells, but the originals can still be unlocked.
In the first game you had to get the Holy Sword, which unleashed a finisher move, and in this game you search for the Holy Shield, which allows the Little Hero to absorb projectile attacks and fill the magic meter.
This game has 3 difficulty modes and 9 save files. You can transfer progress from one file/difficulty to the other. For this reason, there are more upgrades to buy and more EXP to obtain.

Level Design: 7/10 Like in the first game, each game is just a static square with no obstacles, just hordes of monsters. The first difficulty is kinda uninspired. But the other two get very hard and clever with the hordes and monster types. Pushing your skill and abilities to the end.

Characters: 2/10 Same as the previous game. Little Witch and Little Hero = Good, Demon = Evil. However we do learn something about the Original duo in the cutscenes. But I wont spoil.

Music: 7/10 The music did improve noticeably. But it's still on par with the original.

Bosses: 5/10 This game had better Boss strategies. Honestly, Bosses tend to come in hordes on this one. While still spawning regular hordes. Made them quite the feat.
Also the final boss posed a new kind of challenge.

Abilities: 7/10 We got a few extra abilities in this game such as: Extending spells/finishers by gathering magic with the Little Witch while in mid-spell. Converting projectile attacks into magic with Holy Shield. Moving Little Witch to lure Hordes towards her. Instant chest opening with Little Witch. Optional Co-op. Choosing which spells to bring with you. And just having both the Witch and Hero work together.

Replay Value: 10/10 I can see myself playing this game for years to come, just as I did with the original.

Overall: 10/10 Call me biased but I love this series. It's simple design and concept is all I need to have hours of fun. They greatly improved on the original formula. So if you loved the first game, do pick up this game.
