I guess I'll review all of the Humble Bundle games, so consider this Grey's Humble Review Bundle. Or Grey's Indie Summer 2. Let's address the elephant in the Room. Freedom Planet is a Sonic the Hedgehog clone that was made by members of the Sonic fan community. The dreaded Sonic Fan community.... Whatever let's go. Freedom Planet Story: 7.5/10 Okay so the story for Freedom Planet can only be described as "Sonic Fan Fiction". Except team Sonic is all female. So the story begins in Not-China when Not-Eggman kills off an OC King and steals the OC Prince without permission. We then find out that Not-Sonic and Not-Tails just so happened to be around Not-Angel Island as the Not-Badnicks decided to steal the Not-Master Emerald. The story is told thru cutscenes.... oh so long cutscenes. The tone of the cutscenes is inconsistent, one minute it's dark, the next minute it's lighthearted, then funny, then serious, then emotional. You can never truly prepare yourself. Like in true Sonic Fan Fiction there are a lot of elements that just don't belong in the story. They should have been cut for content, but doing so would have hurt their fragile Sonic-Fan heart. Overall the story works. I know I ragged on it a lot. But once you can get past the cringe factor, it's a half-decent story. Long, convoluted and unnecessary, but not terrible. Gameplay: 9.5/10 Remember the good ol' days when Sonic didn't suck? I sure do. And if you are me you consider Sonic 3+Knuckles to be the Pinnacle of Sonic's career. Sega doesn't seem how to capture that 3+K feeling, but these sonic fans managed to pull it off. I legit felt like I was playing some sort of 3+K 2.0 and that's no easy feat. Not only that but the controls were designed to use a D-Pad and 3 buttons... 3 buttons like the Genesis controller. The gameplay is fast, controls are tight (even offering sensitivity tweaking), the music and backgrounds are amazing. As much as I love to rag on Sonic Fans, they did it. They made a good game. Level Design: 10/10 These levels were amazing and fun. It had many worlds like Not-Green Hill, Not-Hidden Temple, Chinatown Casino, and dare I say it, original ones as well. At least I think they were original. I haven't played every game. Each level had it's own personality, and beautiful attention to detail. Once again, they outdid themselves. Characters: 6.5/10 Now these aren't just any characters. No, they are Original Characters that they created and that you don't have the right to use without permission. DON'T STEAL. First off We have Lilac our Not-Sonic who is totally Original cause she is purple and has braids, while Sonic is blue and braidless. See? Totally Original. Also we have Torque our Not-Tails a side character who pilots an airplane that isn't the Tornado and gives you helpful hints on your quest. Carol the Not-Knuckles who can wall jump, totally different that knuckles wall climbing. And finally Milla our Not-Cream. She is actually kinda original with a gimmick. We fight Brevon the Not-Eggman who seems to be inspired by the "freedom fighters" version of eggman. Also they gave Brevon a Unibrow that resembles eggman's mustache, only upside down. We also see a Not-Shadow, Not-Metal Sonic, and tons of OC's that they just had to squeeze in. IN FACT, All this originality in Character Creation has inspired me to make my own Original Character that belongs to me and you guys can't use without permission. PLEASE DON'T STEAL. So Excuse me as I go to Furry Doll maker. Spoiler: click to toggle Okay now back to the review. the characters aren't all bad. Despite lacking originality in some areas, they are very unique in others. The games long cutscenes makes sure to show case many of their qualities and backstory that you didn't need to know, and that doesn't help advance the plot in anyway. But if there is a word to describe them, it's endearing. Specially Mayor Zao, he is a riot. Music: 10/10 This game has an amazing Soundtrack. I could hear it all day. Not sure who composed it, but truly it's chiptunes at it's finest. Plus it felt like something that would have been on the Genesis. Bosses: 9/10 The bosses were plentiful in this game. Each level had at least one present. They truly presented a challenge. Even though some had a pattern that could easily be memorized, others were brutally hard. And towards the end of the game, they are just downright impossible. Luckily the game has a casual mode for those toddlers who aren't up for the challenge. It allows them to be invincible during boss battle. Abilities: 7/10 So basically there is movement and your 3 buttons. 1 button is for jumping, 1 is for attacking, and the other for a special. Also each character has a secondary jump command. The specials are different for each character and include Boosting, Lighting kicks, and shielding. While there are no super forms, Carol does have a motorbike that allows for different gameplay. Replay Value: 10/10 The game has 3 characters, 4 difficulty levels, 3 modes, achievements & trophies. So yeah, I can see myself coming back to this one many times in the future. Overall: 9/10 I don't know why Sega can't pull it off, cause these guys did it. A true love letter to the classics. While there may be some issues with Fandom, the game is great on it's own. My main complaint is that there isn't a co-op mode. What is a Genesis Sonic game without a playable co-op Tails? But I digress. Freedom Planet is well worth the $15 price tag. Edited by Greymon57, Sep 15 2016, 12:06 PM.

I was never really a big fan of the 2D Sonic playstyle, so I'll probably end up passing on this game. Great review none the less Grey! |
