Last Year there was all this hype around Runbow, and I didn't really understand why. So when I saw this game added to the bundle I was quite pleased.
*My review does not include DLC stages.

Runbow

Story: 1/10 Well this game isn't really about story. But there were nice enough to include a story in two of it's modes. In adventure mode, The Colored Hues and Vals are shooting a movie when the Mono-chrome villainess 'Satura' decides to crash their shoot out of jealousy. Now it's up to the Hue & Val to stop her. In Bowhemoth mode, the Hues & Vals get swallowed by the Bowhemoth and must now delve deep into it's digestive system in order to escape.

Gameplay: 10/10 Now this is what the game is about. Gameplay. Just good ol' platforming, no gimmicks. Well there is one gimmick and I'm sure you all know what it is. The backgrounds change colors, and any time a platform is the same color as it's background the platform doesn't exist. In other words, if you can't see it then it's not there.
But besides that one gimmick the platforming here is solid. Like super solid. If you just like the Platforming genre, and you don't need explanations for it's world, then this game is for you. Tons of levels and tons of challenges. Not to mention varying modes and difficulties.

And yes this game is meant to be a party game so up to 9 players can join in. Although the more players on the screen the harder the challenges become. Still its great, nobody has to be bored waiting for their turn. As long as they have enough controllers, everyone should be able to play.

Level Design: 9/10 While the platforming is basic, the game has many different layouts. The main 4 themes in the game are "Forest/Waterfall", "Hawaiian Island/Volcano", "Prison Break", "Haunted Manor". It uses standard gaming tropes such as going up waterfalls, instant death spikes, etc. And many of the level designs tend to be very original. ...But at the same time a lot of these levels seem to be based off a Template. A template stage that is giving several variations. Granted some of the variations were quite unique. But it felt lazy to me. Overall there is enough variety to keep the levels feeling stale, so I'm not complaining too much.

Characters: 4/10 This game gives you a wide variety of characters from which to choose from.... unfortunately they all play exactly the same. Nonetheless the characters are all skins slapped on a Male or Female template. Hue is our Male template, Val is our female template, and Satura is our villainess. Being a graphic design major, I got the joke in their names. There are many indie character skins in this game as well. Many of which I knew off. Some were just new to me. The indie characters are nice, but don't really add anything to the overall play experience. Just a nice bonus

Music: 7/10 The music in this game is plentiful, and yet sounds the same. Not in a repetitive way. It's just the music mainly stays in the background. It's catchy but not memorable. It adds to the mood, but it's not a soundtrack you would want to listen independently.

Bosses: 5/10 Adventure mode has 5 boss stages. The first part of the stage is a hard challenge leading up to Satura. Then Satura tends to have room with faster chaging backgrounds and platforms and some sort of insta-kill mechanic. When you reach Satura, one punch will take care of her. So it's not so much a boss battle as a boss challenge.

Abilities: 4/10 You can walk, have a double jump, punch, and charged attack. That's pretty much it. If timed right your charge attack can be used as a triple jump. At first this 3rd jump is optional, but as the game's difficulty increases it becomes necessary. The abilities are very basic and bland, but like I said earlier the game is about platform jumping. So they are just enough.

Replay Value: 7/10 This isn't a memorable game, or epic game experience. It's a basic platformer that's actually fun to play. And for that reason I'm pretty sure I'll keep coming back to this game. Since I got it, I keep coming back to it on days when I don't know what I want to play. It's so simple that it tends to fit almost any mood. So yes, the game does have replay value, whether it's 1-P Adventure, or 9-P Online.

Overall: 7.5/10 Despite the fact that I absolutely loved this game, I'm rating it 7.5 due to how bare bones it is. I really do feel that it's basic design is what makes it great, and yet I couldn't really feel giving the game a higher rating. Runbow is a game that I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys platforming.

Seen a few videos of this game online, looked really fun. Have you seen that there is a 3DS version on the way Grey?
