I remember downloading the Demo to this game many years ago. I loved it, but the price was a bit steep for me. Thanks to Humble Bundle, I got it for practically nothing. Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure Story: 10/10 Excellent story told mainly thru animated cutscenes, but also through in game dialogue and mini-games. IDK why they haven't just adapted this into a full length movie cause I'd buy it. The plot uses a lot of video game logic, despite taking place in a semi-realistic world. Basically We have our pre-pubescent protagonist, Phantom R, who is trying to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. However due to Phantom R's "illegal activities" the entire police department is out to get him. One day he stumbles on some secret society's plot to resurrect Napoleon so he can take over the world. And in the midst of this plot is a 10 year old girl whom he saves and together they try to crack the mystery together. Gameplay: 8/10 Okay this game has a variety of Gameplays. First you have your overworld map. Similar to Mario bros 3. Move with the D-Pad to enter each area. Once in an area, use the touch screen to explore and interact with it. You obtain missions and objectives this way. As you try to solve mysteries or just make people happy. Now where the game truly shines is in it's Rhythm games. And these are very random. From using the touch screen, to the gyro-sensors, to buttons. The game keeps mixing it up to add a different play experience each and every time. The rhythm games also differ in difficulty. So there is always that. Level Design: 5/10 I guess the area's are more like Point & click games. Since the game takes place in Paris, France, all we see are illustrations of real world places. Not bad, but not original either. Characters: 9/10 This game has plenty of characters. Most of which appear frequently. But as for Main Characters, We have Phantom R, Charlie, Marie, & Napoleon. Our 3 Main Characters all seem to be under the age of 13. And yes, as the story progresses we learn about them and what made them who they are. The story also wraps up nicely in the end. Which is good, because it's a long game and you really do get to feel for them. Music: 11/10 What's a good Rhytm game without excellent Music. Rhythm Thief delivers some excellent catchy tunes. Granted it comes at the expense of so much 3DS memory, but totally worth it. You also get to unlock the songs and listen to them when you want. Music is not just for the games, it sets the tone for the games story and animated cutscenes. Bosses: 7/10 The Boss Battles in this game appear in the form of, you guessed, more Rhythm games. While there is a re-ocurring boss, most bosses have their own unique feel to them. Truly gives you a feel of a fight. And yet... the final Boss felt kinda easy for me. But the pre-final boss fight was epic. FYI the Pre-final boss fight is the conclusion of the re-ocurring Boss. And honestly it couldn't have been more perfect, or difficult. Abilities: 8.5/10 Well since it's a rhythm game, the abilities are limited to the games itself. Nonetheless here is a list of Phantom R's skill set: Excellent Dancer, Master Thief, Parkour, Dog Show Trainer, 5-star Souz Chef, Butler, Fencing, Soccer Champ, Safe Cracker, Martial Artist, Escape Artist, And able to make superman jumps because reasons.... I warned you about the Video game logic didn't I? Despite all, his OP status just makes him all the more loveable. Kinda like a 12 year old Batman. Replay Value: 10/10 Honestly, when I downloaded the Demo years ago, I never stopped playing it. Right down to when I used up all my replays. So I'm sure I'll be playing this game for years to come. Trying to S rank each individual rhytm game, or attempting the hard mode and marathon modes. Overall: 10/10 At the end of the day, Rhythm Thief is a fun game. A fun game with a great story and great music. Hopefully SEGA will hurry up and make the sequel... but it's SEGA so I'm not holding my breath. I totally recommend this game to anyone, especially to fans of rhythm games. Oh and on a sidenote, Why doesn't this game have a Miiverse Community? I wanted to share so many moments but couldn't. ![]() Edited by Greymon57, Sep 15 2016, 12:00 PM.

I used to have the physical copy for this game, but I ended up trading it in. It's been awhile since I played it so my memory is fuzzy, but I remember not liking it too much. I'm glad you enjoyed it though Grey, nice review .

*LeGasp* How could you? Meh, to each their own. I'm not usually a fan of rhythm games. This one kept me hooked. IDK if it was the storyline, or all the potential waifu's that the game choose not implement. Seriously, so many flirty girls that DIDN'T end up with Rafael. I'd make that the sequel. "Rhythm Thief & the Stolen Hearts" make it happen SEGA. |
