***BIAS WARNING*** Grey does not like Space shooters. Grey's bias may factor into the review score. Nano Assault EX Story: 1/10 Basically earth and or the universe is in danger for reasons unexplained and so the last hope lasts in a space station that will send an unnamed pilot into a human body, I think, for reasons unknown. Maybe the story was more laid out, IDK it doesn't matter. You visit cell clusters and collect DNA sequences. I'm not sure the story had a definitive ending. Gameplay: 6/10 Imagine Galaga fused with Mario Galaxy. You fly around these "cell clusters" searching for 3 DNA strands, along the way there are lots of enemies and bullet fire. One hit kills you, but luckily you have extra lives. The "cell cluster" design was an excellent Idea. Each cluster is like a mario galaxy planet. You always fly around the surface, no matter the shape of the cluster. It both adds an element of mystery, as well as terrible camera angles. But it works. You also have access to a map in case you become disoriented. And trust me you will. The rest is simple. You just shoot at everything that comes your way. Well the shooting itself is complicated. You can push the AXBY buttons to shoot in the direction of the screen the button points to. Push two adjacent buttons for diagonal shooting. This by itself is great. But since the clusters warp in odd shapes, your ships orientation always changes, but your line of fire always corresponds to the direction of input. It's confusing, definitely requires some getting used to. Level Design: 7/10 Not complaining on the designs of the clusters. As I mentioned before, many of them felt mysterious. Some were just dangerous and unfair, other's mildly pleasant. The simple fact that they didn't go with the traditional flat screen was definitely a plus, in my opinion anyways. Also there are Boss levels that take a 'Star fox' perspective to them. So a good way of adding variety. Characters: 0/10 Uhm, what characters? Music: 3.5/10 It's not bad... Just not good either. It's video game music. It fits the environment, it doesn't get old or repetitive. But it's no brilliant soundtrack either. Bosses: 6/10 This game had plenty of them, and often times it flipped the perspective and did many original things. They were challenging. And most of them require the 3D on to tell how far the bullets are from you. Abilities: 4/10 Well you can shoot.... and you have a range of secondary weapons. Not that you need them, the default secondary weapon is the best anyways. Oh and as you defeat enemies they sometimes drop blue gems. Collecting them allows you to level up, sort of. You get a higher extra life maximum. And other things like that. Replay Value: 3/10 In addition to the story mode, there is an arcade mode, boss rush mode, and a few unlockables. So I guess there is motive to go back to this game. But it's just not a genre that I'm into. Sorry. Overall: 5.5/10 Despite everything I enjoyed this game for what it was. But It's not something that I personally would recommend. I don't think I'll be coming back to this one. Graphics: 10/10 Normally I don't talk about graphics, or rate them. As I believe they don't really matter. But man are this game's visuals gorgeous. Like I truly enjoyed keeping the 3D on at all times while playing this. Best use of 3D I've seen on the 3DS. I've played Nano Assault Neo on Wii U and it was good. Shinen are wizards with making games look gorgeous on limited hardware. |
