Normally I wait a few days after completion to write a review. But the only other game I've beaten recently is "Swords & Soldiers II" and well... I really don't want to review that. Thomas was Alone Story: 10/10 The story is told thru narration. And well, I guess that makes it more of a storybook plot. The Narrator tells you not only what is currently happening on screen, but also things off screen. Things like fear, and hope, motivation, and thoughts. Despite the fact that characters are just rectangles, the narrator's description of them makes them seem so human, so alive. Gameplay: 9/10 The gameplay is essentially Runbow, just single player and without the color changing gimmick. You play as a variety of different colored rectangles. Each one has their own feel. Some jump higher than others, some are bigger, some wider, etc. So they don't all play the same. In each level you must find your way to the 'Portal' but each rectangle has it's own portal. You switch back and forth between them, as they work together to reach their portal. The difficulty never gets too hard. Although they do overuse instant death spikes. Still this is a game that is all about the gameplay. Good ol' 2D platforming, with a small focus on puzzle solving. My kind of game. Level Design: 8/10 The levels are great. Various designs, and puzzles. Never did it feel old or repetitive for me. On the contrary I was able to play the game all in one sitting. And still wanted more. But that is kinda a point against it, it's too short. I mean it has a decent amount of content, just wish it had more. But the levels are fresh, the narration made them feel alive. As I said they overuse the instant death spikes, and they do have instant death water. Well one rectangle is water-proof and floats. That ends up being a gimmick all on it's own. In the end, I was satisfied with the Levels in this game. Characters: 10/10 Despite being rectangles, they have so much personality. Christopher is bitter and hates other, John is a show off and loves attention, Laura is a fractured soul, Claire is the superhero, James is ashamed for being different, and of course Thomas is glad he isn't alone. The narration really makes you feel for them. The story goes dark, and light hearted, funny, and scary. These pixelated Rectangles had more personality and thought put into them than many characters in Big Named Games. Oh yeah, and the villain is called Grey... Music: 5/10 The music was all right. Relaxing. Sets a mood. Ambient music, y'know? Not the greatest, but pretty good. Bosses: NA There are none. Abilities: 5/10 So for the most part all you do is walk and jump. Each character has it's own speed, and jump height. Some have extra abilities, like floating on water, double jump, bouncy body, inverted gravity, and Jetpack. While they may not be the greatest of abilities, they do help spice up the gameplay. Replay Value: 8/10 I will definitely be revisiting this one with friends and family. Just to see their reactions to the puzzles and narration. Average Sum: 7.9/10 Overall Experience: 9/10 The game was enjoyable. I know I compared it to Runbow, but the narration and deeply fleshed out characters made me give it a higher score. But this game is a single player experience, meant to be taken in as a story that makes you think. And well they did a great job at that. As of right now this game is just $1 on the eshop. I recommend you buy it while the sale lasts. |
