I have heard great things of this game. Will it hold up? Gunman Clive Story: 1/10 Not much of a Story here. Girlfriend kidnapped, must rescue her. Gameplay: 6/10 Gunman Clive is a Jump&Shoot Sidescrolling Platform. You would think it would borrow inspiration from Megaman, but nope. This game does it's own thing. The main aspect of the gameplay is the levels, but I'll discuss that in the next category. The gameplay is basic platforming, with unforgiving elements. Sometimes it's easy paced, then it goes super cruel, then back to easy. Honestly I feel this game was hyped because of it's hand-drawn looking filter. The game looks gorgeous. But the gameplay was kinda generic. Still it's a decent platformer with 3 characters to choose from, each with different abillities. Level Design: 8/10 Okay so the levels are the best thing this game offers. It starts you off as a typical plaformer. But then it gets a bit... puzzley? I mean it's not puzzles, but it requires thinking. You can't just run in guns blazin' and expect to survive. Duck for cover behind barrels and boxes when necessary. Observe your enemies movements, shoot strategically. Precise jumping is required for many platforms. Well precise jumping and precise shooting. The levels are not that long. But they also don't have save points. When the difficulty ramps up, you will wish for savepoints. As you find yourself repeating the same challenges over and over again. Luckily you have unlimited lives. Still it gets frustrating. You memorize the layout of the level, even build a pattern, only to get to the last segment and die. Forcing you to the beginning. Still you get a great sense of accomplishment when you finish. Characters: 1/10 Characters have no backstory or personality. All we know is that Clive and Ms. Johnson are in some sort of relationship. And the duck is... well a duck. They have zero dimension to them. But I'm still giving them 1 point for have 3 characters. The difference in abilities make the levels feel a bit different. Music: 7/10 The soundtrack is allright. They weren't all great, but two stood out to me. One that reminded me of Gerudo Valley, and the other reminded me of Megaman. The rest were fine I guess. The western theme was felt throughout. Bosses: 4/10 Well I give them credit for trying. Honestly there was only one boss that I felt was original. The rest were just generic goons. The final boss was just two over-used tropes in platformers. Like they were good concepts originally, but have become so common in gaming that they just feel predictable and uninspired. The difficulty on the bosses wasn't that high either. Most bosses I would beat in 3 tries or less. The one exception being the Boss I felt was original. Abilities: 5/10 So Clive's abilities are running, jumping and shooting. Ms.Johnson walks, jumps, and shoots. While she can't run she can slow her descent from a jump. Kinda like Peach in SMB2, except she doesn't hover, she just falls slowly. The Duck runs and flaps. The Duck can't shoot, making it a truly pacifist character. That means no bosses for the duck. It's jump isn't very high, but it can flap a few times allowing it to reach higher heights than the other two. Clive and Ms.J can pick up random power-ups to upgrade their gun, but it's lost upon taking damage. Some of the power-ups include: Spread, Homing bullets, rapid fire bullets. The duck gets no power-ups. Replay Value: 3/10 The game has 3 difficulty settings, and 3 characters. That's a total of 9 possible combinations. Even so, this game just wasn't for me. I will say that for an extra challenge, trying the duck on hard might be fun. But really, I don't think I'll revisit this one much. Average Sum:4.25/10 Overall Experience: 4/10 It is a bit disappointing. I'd heard great things about this game. Yet it felt to me like something that should have been released on the early years of the GameBoy. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It seems that the fancy Filter and music may have fooled others into thinking this game was better than it truly was. Then again, any game that has 3 playable characters with different abilities is good in my book. But really this is the kind of game you play once and then move on. GET IN THE BAG NEBBY

I played this game and enjoyed it. It was super cheap which was nice at a time where the eShop was plagued with tons of overpriced games that were risky to take a chance at buying. Need to get the sequel someday, as it looks like a nice improvement. |

I'm glad you liked it Cj. And maybe my review was a bit harsh. It's not that the game was bad, I just feel it wasn't for me. Too short and too difficult. If it was easier with longer levels and savepoints I might have enjoyed it more, but then it wouldn't be the same game. I understand what it was trying to do, but it just missed the mark with me. The 3 characters were a nice addition, one of it's stronger parts. |
