Back in the day, before micro-transactions and Smartphones, there was a little phone game known as snake. Out of all the games that came pre-loaded onto your phone, this was the only one truly worth playing. Seems like everyone who had it was playing it. As technology advanced this game got replaced by the candy crushes of this age. Well luckily "Snake 97" allows you to relive the glory days. Snake 97 (mobile) Story: N/A No story whatsoever. Gameplay: 6.5/10 The game has an Arcade-ish feel. You are a snake in a square, there are dots in the square. Eat dots to enlarge the snake, careful not to hit any corner, or yourself. Really it's a game about making trick corners, and speedy reflexes. But it's more to it than that. If you want to go for the highscore, then you need to have a strategy. These high score strategies were not simple. You needed dedication and patience. Slow down the games speed, and zig zag next to yourself to avoid creating an obstacle of yourself. You also needed skill making corners, as the buttons weren't as responsive as a controller. Also this version has a neat interface. It transforms your screen into a retro Nokia phone. And push the buttons just as you would have back in the day. Level Design: 1/10 Well this game has no real levels. Except it does feature an alternate upgraded version of the game. This version has 4 maps, and an updated looking snake and apples. The maps are extremely basic, but they add enough of a variant to make gameplay different. Characters: 0/10 Hungry Snake, that is all. Music: N/A Bosses: N/A Abilities: 1/10 You can turn on 90 degree angles. Also you grow per dot eaten. Replay Value: 8/10 Even in today's vast library for mobile gaming, this one is still my most played game. Average Sum: 3.3/10 Overall Experience: 8.5/10 Okay why the stark contrast? I'm rating Snake for what it is, a phone game from the 90's. Most of those games were terrible, this one stood the test of time. It wasn't bad. It was very good and addicting. While it is missing elements from consoles that would have made this much better, it's important to understand the medium and limited technology it was originally programmed on. Also the fact that it can hold it's own against the tons of next gen shovelware out there is a testament all it's own. |
