Random poll I felt like making. What kind of gameplay would you want if Retro or anyone makes another Metroid game? Which type of games are when Samus is at her prime? (Pun intended)

I think the best 2D games captured the concept best. They both have some weaker games, but 3D has the really bad one.

They've both had really good and really bad games. Although, as Exdeath pointed out, 3d has the worst.
Still, I don't think format particularly matters.
In the name of intellectualism, I will chastise you.

2D IMO, although if they managed a good mix of both that would be awesome. Other m sort of felt kinda like a move more towards 2D and 3D, but i think the guys at retro could move away from the prime style and give us something akin to donkey kong country returns but with metroid. Could you imagine the dynamic areas and overall look they could end up creating? It would be sweet.

I'm going with the third option, equal, cause both have their charm and weak points.

I, personally, can't form a proper opinion, since I've not had a chance to play Metroid Prime since my brother lost it (he loses too many things). However, I've played Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid and love those games.

Unfortunately I've only played Super Metroid out of the 2D games, but I have plenty of experience with 2D Metroidvania games to know I'd enjoy Fusion and Zero Mission just fine to say the least. I did play every 3D game in the series so far though, and while Prime is my favorite Metroid, I don't think any subsequent attempt was quite as enjoyable. Prime 2 is good but it has some stupid design choices that'd keep me from replaying it, Prime 3 bored me to tears and I dropped it 2 hours into the game, Other M is among the most dissapointing games I've played. So I'm inclining on voting 2D

I've mostly only played the 3D Metroid, so I'm sorta biased in that regard.

Although I have been able to play a few of the 2D Metroids. Fusion is my favorite 2D one. Followed by Super. I've also played the NES one, but I didn't like it much at all.

Overall, I'd probably have to say 2D Metroid is better. Super Metroid, Fusion, and Zero Mission are all great games, and Metroid 1 and 2 aren't half bad (although they've both aged pretty poorly).

Among the 3D games, the only one I really love is Prime 1. Prime 1 is easily my favorite game in the series (hell, it's even in my top 5 games of all time), but the other 3D games just don't hold up as well overall when compared to the 2D games. Prime 2 was okay at best, with some pretty odd design choices as well as being pretty damn boring in some areas, in my opinion. Prime 3 was a good game, but there were some aspects about it that keeps it from being as good or replayable as Prime 1 (there's probably a reason I've only played it once). Other M, while not a terrible game from a gameplay perspective, I felt could have been a lot better in several aspects and was a major disappointment considering how much hype was surrounding it.

I'll have to go with that option.

Looks like Nintendo has plans to make new games for both types!

The following comes from a Kotaku interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi...

Stephen Totilo, Kotaku: I can't ask you what's going on with Pikmin, because you've answered that for the last couple of years in a row. I can't ask you what's going on with Star Fox, because you answered that this year. So... what is going on with Metroid?

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo: The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you'll have to ask him.

Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo: So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them.

Bill Trinen, Nintendo — who had been translating for our interview: Mr. Miyamoto was prompting him to say, 'Which of these two styles do you like best?'

Totilo: It's been so long that I miss both of them. They're both great, but it's been a long time. The [2D] Metroid people don't really much anymore. The only one like that recently was a Batman game made for the 3DS and the Vita that was created by some guys who used to be at Retro. So I miss that style of game. As for Metroid Prime, nobody at all makes anything like that. So in other words, if you don't do it, no one will.

Miyamoto: This falls into your question before of remaking the same franchises.

Totilo: I'll get back to that in a second, but which of the two styles do you guys like better? The 2D or Metroid Prime?

Takahashi: I like them both. They both have a different style of appeal.

Miyamoto: I have the New Super Mario Bros. series [for 2D], so I like Prime. I think there's still a lot of new things that could be done with the Prime series.

Hope we see something for these sooner rather than later.

TGNGirl. Wait what
2D Metroid has kept me more interested then 3D, plus it pretty much created a genre, so I'm going with that.

and that news on both genre's having a future is great, I'm really interested in seeing my dream of a 3D 2D Metroid come true.

Welp , I've played at least a bit of every 2D metroid since my post here. While I can't say Metroid 1 and 2 do anything for me, I love Super and Zero Mission, and Fusion is also great. Whereas with the 3D games I only really liked the first Prime, so it's fair to say I like 2D better.

Looking back, I kind of wonder if that 2014 interview above had Samus Returns in mind...or at least they had plans for some 2D Metroid, since development on it began in 2015.

They mentioned making a 3D game, well clearly they were talking about Federation Force :wario:

2D, enjoyed Prime but 2D is how Samus is suppose to be played. Take it from an old... Old... OLD..... School Gamer, who stared with a Black and Green Screen and stick figures representing characters.
