The Crystalwing Army There are two main branches of the Army: the Military Branch and the Scientific Branch. The Scientific Branch has its own head that has full authority over that branch, and answers to the Crystal General himself. The Central branch is more offensive and defensive based, while the Scientific one only accepts the most intelligent members, and has its own hierarchy. There is only one way to enter the Army: to show that you have the potential to develop powers. Humans start developing powers when they're 12-14 years old, and they're always small things, like making a little wind, lighting a small spark, not getting wrinkles when you're in the water, hold you breath for a little longer than average, etc. All in all, it's sort of noticeable they exist, but they don't change anything mayor in someone's life. People that develop powers are the only ones that can enter the Army, but they're not required to do so; the final decision is theirs. If they don't join, their powers don't develop further, and they never will. If they do join, though, they need to fill a form on a certain date and pass some health exams, and then they're given the rank of Recruit. As long as you can pass the exams and prove you have powers, you can join at any age. Recruits can live both in Zhey or in their normal houses, and they need to train for one full year. Then, the Staff Sergeants evaluate them in personality and morals, and if they pass, they're taken to the cave where they can get an egg. If Recruits fail any of those exams or no egg calls to them, they're expelled from the Army. After they have their egg, they're moved to the rank of Soldiers. Since anyone with powers can be a Recruit but only the ones chosen by a dragon can be a Soldier, Soldiers have harsher training sessions that assume they're going to get into the Army. Their egg is also documented and they're informed of the breed that's going to hatch and how to take proper care of it. Soldiers are still under the supervision of Staff Sergeants. Once the egg hatches, Soldiers are given one month of vacation so they can become accustomed to their hatchling, and after that the training resumes with the two of them present. Then, the Soldier's most important mission will become and will always be to ensure the safety of their dragon. If the dragon dies before the blood pact, its partner is immediately expelled from the army, and no second chances are given. There have been rare cases where Recruits didn't feel any egg calling to them an they just picked up a random egg; those can always be detected since the dragon is always born dead. Until they're mature hatchlings, dragons need to be with their chosen human or they can't survive. Once the hatchling matures, the Soldier can make the blood pact with it. The blood pact only involves the dragon licking some of the human's blood, but it changes everything. Now, the dragon and the human can read each other's minds, and the human's powers grow exponentially. Their lives are also linked; if one dies, so does the other. Once the blood pact is completed, the Soldier receives a new kind of training that focuses on the development of his powers, and when the dragons grows into an adult (in other words, when it's two years old), the Soldier is given the Airman rank; the kind of rank (Airman, First Class Airman or Senior Airman) depends on the strength of his power and bond with the dragon. Airmen are the lowest rank considered official members of the Army, and the youngest ones are 16 years old. Airmen of the three ranks are all supervised by the Technical Sergeants. They train the Airmen and their dragons, teach them the rules of the Army, etc. They may also form small groups of Airmen and take the to the cities to show them how to patrol and deal with criminals, and when is it necessary to ask for help of higher ranks. Once they see that an Airman of either rank can hold his own and is prepared to be promoted, they recommend them to a Master Sergeant, who has the final decision. Airmen can choose to enter the Scientific Branch or remain in the Central one, but if the Master Sergeant disagrees, they either have to reconsider their choice or remain an Airmen until they're ready for what they want. Military Branch Ranks The three kinds of Sergeants (Staff, Technical and Master) are mainly teachers and administrators, and as such, aren't chosen for their power. Major Generals are the ones in charge of choosing them, since Sergeants are the ones most in contact with the new members and the ones that can influence them the most. Sergeants need to be able to control the new members, so they all have personality and charisma, and them and their dragons are powerful enough to control a crowd composed of young people and dragons. As such, there are cases where a Sergeant is more powerful than some of the middle ranks, but remains a Sergeant because of his teaching ability. Master Sergeants are the only rank where administrative proficiency is more important than power; they're chosen solely on their ability to manage large amounts of information, be good judges of character, and make good decisions over who should go where, so they're not chosen on their power in combat. They review Airmen candidates for promotion, and decide if their request to be moved to the Scientific Branch (where promotion is based on personality and intelligence instead of power) or be kept in the Central Branch (combat-oriented) should be accepted. If they approve of the candidate's promotion into the Central Branch, candidates are given the rank of Second Lieutenants. Second Lieutenants are then partnered with another Second and placed under the vigilance of a First Lieutenant. First Lieutenants are basically Second Lieutenants that have been longer in the army, and have learned how to properly handle arrests and low crimes; they're basically the police. Even if the Airmen and their superior are the ones to spot the crime, First and Second Lieutenants are the ones that escort the criminal to Zhey and arrange the trial, witness accounts, evidences, etc, often with the company of one or more members of the Scientific Branch. Each team (comprised by two Seconds and a First, and their three dragons) is under the supervision of a Captain, and are the lowest ranks allowed to use weapons. Captains act like judges: only the most objective and smart members are chosen for this position. The team they handle presents every little piece of evidence to him and his dragon, and after listening to the accused and witnesses, they're the ones that arm the case and decide both the verdict and sentence, though they need the approval of a member of the Higher Ranks to make them official. They're authorized to make arrests on the spot too, and every Captain must have spent at least two years as a First and/or Second Lieutenant to be considered for the position. Both Captains and Majors are chosen by a Brigadier General. Majors are chosen based on their teaching abilities and how good they are at using weapons and fighting with their dragons as a team. They teach combat techniques and which weapons are better suited for the other members, and teach the dragons about their powers and how to combine them with their human's. They also teach how to use the telepathic link to its maximum efficiency. Being powerful members, Majors take care of mayor crimes where arms are involved instead of the First and Second Lieutenant teams. When a member of any of these ranks and their dragon show to have intelligence, strong morals and strength in combat, they're considered for promotion. Lieutenant Colonels and all the higher ranks have the necessary authority to arrest people even without a clear motive, and issue an investigation later. Colonels are also the ones in charge of the different levels of the prison in Zhey, and as such, need to be strong enough to handle a large number of restrained but dangerous criminals. Each Colonel chooses a Lieutenant Colonel from lower ranks that reports only to them and helps with the administration of the prison. The breed of the dragon starts being considered too, and members with aggressive or large breeds as partners are rarely chosen due to the closed, underground status of the prison. Over Colonels are Brigadier Generals, the ones responsible of choosing Captains and deciding which Lieutenants should team up with each other under the supervision of which Captain. They are good judges of potential, and as so try to make the teams as diverse as possible to have an open enough view of each crime. They're the ones that assign the Colonels to the different levels of the prison, and that handle all the paperwork of each sector. Lastly, Major Generals are the ones that hold the maximum authority over the prison, and they both choose Colonels and Brigadier Generals and supervise the latter ones. Major Generals can have any breed of dragon as partner, as long as they have mastered battling together. Besides being in control of the prison, Major Generals are the ones that organize and send teams (often led by themselves) against the most dangerous crimes, and acts that border on or are directly considered terrorism. They are the highest Middle Rank. Lastly, the Higher Ranks are comprised of the most powerful and intelligent members of the Army. The General of the Air Force, or Crystal General, is the only position both hereditary and held only by one person. They in charge of and supervise the whole Army, and can decide the rules everyone must follow and override decision made by any other rank. The Crystal General and their dragon are usually also the most powerful member of the Army, and descend from the first Crystal General, the one that found the cave with the dragon eggs. The Crystal General is also the one that chooses the highest non-hereditary rank; all three Generals need to go through an exhaustive background check, health and physical exam, personality examination and compatibility with their dragon test to even be considered for the position. They report directly to the Crystal General, and are the most powerful members after him. Since the Crystal General can't handle everything himself, Generals help with all the administrative issues, though they have to inform the Crystal General of everything they do. Each General chooses a Lieutenant General based on their own standards, and the Lieutenant General helps his assigned General with everything. When Soldiers are ascended, they usually have the rank of Airman until they prove their worth to be of a higher rank. Members of the Army can also be demoted if they can't do a proper job, or if someone else is found to be more competent for the job; in that case, a demotion happens only if the number of people with the rank is full. Usually, all member of one rank report to the rank directly above, except on the cases explained above. Lower Ranks aren't allowed the use of weapons. All decisions made by Generals are absolute and can only be overridden by the Crystal General himself. If a member of the Army doesn't wish to continue serving, he can quit or retire anytime. He needs to fill forms for both him and his dragon, and agree that both of them be implanted with a microchip that informs the Army of their location. This is so corrupt members can't quit, go into hiding and then cause trouble. The microchip is made with biological materials and doesn't have the most minimum impact in either the human's or the dragon's lives. If a member is expelled, they have their powers restrained by using a kind of bracelet that also serves as a tracker. Depending on the reason of their expulsion, they're either free to go with their dragon or put into prison. The lowest levels of the prison have special facilities to contain dragons, since they're incarcerated too if their human is. To Sum it Up: Name of the rank (are taken/there are) - small description Higher Ranks: Higher Ranks are the most powerful of all, and they have authority over all the lower ranks General of the Air Force (Crystal General) (1/1) - Head of the whole army. The only hereditary position. General (2/3) - They supervise their assigned sections, handle and organize documents from them and make proposals about important army stuff. They're chosen directly by the Crystal General, and each of them choose the Lieutenant General under them. They also choose the Major Generals. Lieutenant General (0/3) - Something like personal secretaries for the Generals. They have control over their General's section, and mostly do the groundwork Generals are too busy or too important to do themselves. Each Lieutenant is chosen by the General they'll be helping. Middle Ranks: Middle Ranks can carry weapons, and starting from Lieutenant Colonels, each rank is stronger than the one below Major General (0/6) - Maximum authority over the prison. They administrate everything there, including sentences, and are the lowest ranks called when major criminals the level of terrorists arise. They choose Colonels and Brigadier Generals Brigadier General (1/8) - Administrates the prison. They also choose Majors and Captains, and are the ones that decide which Captain should handle which team. Colonel (0/12) - In charge of the different levels of the prison depending on their powers. Each of them chooses the Lieutenant Colonel under them. Lieutenant Colonel (0/12) - They handle the hard work of Colonels. Each one is chosen by the Colonel they're going to be under. Major (1/20) - Majors are masters of weapons, and teach their use and how to fight with a dragon to the three ranks below. They're also authorized to make arrests, and are the lowest ranks called when dangerous or armed criminals are spotted. Captain (0/25) - Each one is in charge of a team of a First and two Second Lieutenants, and they act as the judges of the cases the team investigates. First Lieutenant (0/25) - Each one is tasked with leading and teaching two Second Lieutenants how to properly handle and catalog evidence, investigate a case and make accusations and arrests. Second Lieutenant (0/50) - They're basically the police. They can make arrests and investigate the different cases. Lower Ranks: Master Sergeant (0/100) - They supervise the other Sergeants. They review the candidates for promotion and accept or reject them. Technical Sergeant (0/150) - They supervise all Airmen, Airmen First Class and Senior Airmen, and are responsible for them. They supervise them on patrols and decide when they're strong enough to be promoted or moved to the Scientific Branch. Staff Sergeant (0/170) - They supervise all Recruits and Soldiers and are responsible for them. That includes training sessions and making sure they pass all requirements before promotion. Senior Airman (0/250) - Slightly higher above Airmen First Class. They can go to the cities and patrol under supervision, and have authority over lower Airmen. Airman First Class (0/500) - Slightly higher above Airmen. They can go to the cities and patrol under supervision. Airman (0/1000) - Members with adult dragons. They're then taught the rules of the Army. Soldier (no limit (Soldiers are the ones with eggs or hatchlings)) - Soldiers both have harder training sessions than Recruits and start learning how to take proper care of their breed of dragon. They're automatically ascended to Airman, Airman First Class or Senior Airman when they make the blood pact with their dragon. Recruit (no limit (Recruits are the ones without an egg)) - Recruits train to improve their physical and mental condition. They're automatically ascended when they get their egg. Scientific Branch Ranks The Scientific Branch holds a different rank system than its Military counterpart, although it's still under the command of the General of the Airforce. When a Master Sergeant recommends an Airman for a post in the Scientific Branch, one of the Deans prepares a test to determine if they're really fit for the job. Administrative Ranks: Administrative Ranks basically oversee the whole Scientific Branch, and decide what projects should be worked on. Head of the Scientific Branch (1/1) - Head of the whole Scientific Branch. Responds directly to the General of the Airforce. Department Head (0/3) - They supervise each Department, needing to have knowledge about everything it encompasses. They choose the Department Managers and the Section Heads for their Department. Department Manager (0/3) - They do groundwork for the Department Heads. Research Ranks: Reaserch Ranks are the ones who actually work and research on the things assigned to them by the Administrative Ranks. Section Head (0/6) - Each one oversees one section, and they need to have knowledge about all specialties within it, to be able to determine which projects should go where and who should work on them. They choose the Section Managers and Floor Heads, and every promotion/demotion on their section has to go through them. Section Manager (0/8) - They manage each section, doing groundwork for the Section Heads. Floor Head (0/12) - They organize and oversee the floors, with the Managers acting as their "secretaries", so to speak. They need to have knowledge that would let them understand all of the work being done in their floor at any time. They choose the Floor Managers and Scientific Advisors. Floor Manager (0/12) - As their name implies, they manage the floors of each section, doing the groundwork for the Floor Heads. Scientific Advisor (0/20) - They overview each project, recording and organizing all the progress. They assign the teams of Interns and Assistants to a Lead Scientist, taking into account their knowledge, work habits and personalities. They also choose the Lead Scientists. Lead Scientist (0/25) - The ones doing the main and most difficult work within the projects. They get assigned a team of two Interns and one Assistant to work with. There are always a few of them working on each project, and they can choose what to work in, as long as it's within their section. They only need to have specific knowledge of the projects they undertake. They also decide when Interns should be promoted to Assistants. Assistant Scientist (0/25) - They are already experienced, and take part in the more difficult research where the Interns can only watch. Intern Scientist (0/50) - Scientists that have just "graduated". They get assigned to a certain Floor and Section within their specialty, where they learn how everything works from their higher ups. They are always within a team of two Interns and one Assistant, all overseen by a Lead Scientist. Instructive Ranks: Instructive Ranks are organized as a school where the new members are trained, so then a section and floor can be chosen for them. Dean of Instructors (0/100) - They supervise the whole school, and every promotion within it has to go through them. They're the ones to make the final call on who gets assigned where once they finish studying, and can decide to expel students and send them back to Soldiers at any point. Research Instructor (0/150) - The actual teachers. They teach courses depending on their knowledge, and are the ones to choose when Researcher Trainees can move on to Graduates, and which Section and Floor should that Graduate be assigned to. Assistant Instructor (0/170) - They act as assistant teachers for the Research Instructors, while learning how to teach from them. Researcher Graduate (0/250) - They take more specific courses in a specialty of their choice. Researcher Trainee (0/500) - They passed the exam, and start to study general courses. In this stage, they have to choose a field to specialize within. Researcher Candidate (0/1000) - Members who are approved by the Master Sergeants to take the exam. Scientific Branch (made by Main Protagonist :D) is still under construction, so number limits will change as soon as I sort them out. More detailed description like the one for the Military Branch will be added later. Edited by Shiro, Apr 24 2012, 11:31 PM.
