I remember seeing some maori put a makutu on another, and because they believed in the power of the makutu they actually died because of it.. Today's young don't seem to believe in it as much as the older or elders did, the older maori were very strong believers of the makutu and what it could and would do to them and didn't use it lightly.. In fact it as usually only used on someone who they really disliked, or maybe another Iwi they were having problems or a fight with.. In some cases a makutu was put on another whanau or even on the odd occasion an Iwi in the hopes something bad would happen to one or more of them and ruin their confidence.. I haven't seen anyone put a makutu on anyone else for years now, but when the last one I saw happened, the person that got the makutu put on him eventually got quite sick and nearly died.. Luckily they got someone in to lift the makutu and the person survived.. It's kind of strange how the older maori believed in the power of a makutu, if it was a bad one, the person receiving it would almost will themselves to die... |

We have some of the same things here except they call them something different. They are called Superstitions. |

A makutu is more than superstition, if you get a bad enough one put on you, you die.. They're very much a curse... |
