One of the things I feel we likely take for granted is the easy access to somewhere to swim during summer.. In my case for instance, I can easily get to two beaches and a river, all are good for swimming at, and taking a barbecue or picnic meal, both the beaches and the rivers have nice shady spots to sit in, whether it's sitting on the ground, or at a table provided by the local council.. I'm one person that's a bit fussy about what I swim in, as are most people in the country, but the beaches and rivers in my area have very clean water, so everyone's happy to get into the water here and at least get in waist deep.. We also have a small lake that's about 40 minutes drive from my place, I remember it being very popular there, one thing I always remember about going there is arriving and smelling the onions and sausages on folks barbecues, the other was all the trees and such which were good for shade and even better for the kids who used to love climbing, or playing 'hide and go seek'.. Sadly this little lake has lost a bit of it's popularity after it got weed growing in it which has grown right up to within two feet of the surface.. The borough council that looks after the lake hasn't found a way of getting rid of the weed as yet sadly.. This weed is the long stuff that a lot of folk use in aquariums, so it's quite long and lanky, it's harmless, but finding it getting round your feet all of a sudden is a little.. off putting.. It seems that where ever we are in the country, if we aren't close to a beach, then there's a river or lake not too far away, most of which are very good for spending a day at and being lazy.. It's a popular pass time to pack up the car with food and something to drink, then head off, have a swim, then maybe lunch and lye around for a while relaxing.. I can remember finishing work early during summer, then picking up the family and going to the beach for the evening.. We'd get there and have a swim, then as a treat getting fish & chips from the shop over the road and sit on the beach having dinner with a bottle of coke or some such.. The folk that aren't close to a beach more often than not have access to a river or lake.. Over in Taupo they have some really great picnic and swimming spots, the local council there has built a lot of barbecues, which are free to use, the council always has a stock of wood by the barbecues, a lot of the wood comes from construction sites, they have a truck that goes round and picks up the wood from places where houses are being built, or extensions being done and takes it to the barbecues they've built, they'll pick up wood from new businesses being built too, so there's always plenty of wood around during the summer months, even if the picnic spots are busy.. It seems that where ever people live here, getting out for the day with the family for a swim and lunch is little more than half an hours drive away.. If people don't want to swim, they'll do things like take a boat or jet ski with them and either fish or jet ski for a while, skiing is a reasonably popular pass time, or was until petrol got so expensive, we used to have a lot of skiers at the local beaches here, while boating is popular here, it seems yachting has become more popular now, it's amazing to see how many boats and yachts are moored here these days, most of those boats are used a lot too which is good to see.. |

What is the most popular river there? I know we have several rivers here in the US. |

There's only one river where I am, but it runs for miles inland, so any number of picnic spots and swimming areas.. |
