Silly question, but are they actually real houses? They are so cool. I'd love one of those. |

They were all built as part of the film set, I think they're all in Matamata where filming of the Hobbiton scenes took place.. THIS SITE may help a little, it shows the tours for the various filming sets, Hobbiton in still here and doing well, no real residents though, lol... |

There may have been some filming that was done in buildings that were already around, but from what I've been told, the hobbits houses were part of the film set and made especially.. |

lol.. cute is a new one for a house.. If there was such a thing, I imagine they'd be well insulated homes because they were partially underground... |

I was in Matamata long enough to have lunch with a friend I hadn't seen for quite a few years, I only got there for the day, so never got into town itself, just did a cafe at lunch time. I figured seeing as I was going there for lunch I left the motel I was staying in early and got up to have a look at the Hobbiton they made for the filming, thinking back it was a pity my holiday wasn't longer and I had more money. When I got there, I didn't see any of the homes to start with, all I really saw was a few smallish gardens. It wasn't until I got in and got closer I saw doorways and such. I decided to look at Bilbo's home seeing as that was the one that we saw the inside of a bit in the films on a few occasions. I was expecting it to be small and cramped, especially for someone my size, but was quite surprised how easy it was to move around inside. They showed Gandalf bending over to avoid banging his head on lights and such, but I didn't find that, so maybe it was a trick in the filming that showed him bumping a few things while moving around. It was still fairly cool outside when I got there, but once I was inside I was surprised how warm it was. They did have a fire going in the fireplace when I got there, but it was barely going, a few logs would've seen it blazing soon enough, but it was warm enough inside to not really need more wood on the fire. Having all the soil and grass over the homes seemed to be good insulation. I'd live in a home like these though, they seem better than what we have in a lot of ways, it's a pity that building a hobbit type home would be so expensive. I'd recommend a visit to Matamata to see Hobbiton, in my opinion it was well worth the visit, the only thing I'd do if I went again is to have more time to look around, and a camera of course.. |

I bet it would be a great place to visit and knowing that is where they made The Hobbit movies then I would imagine it gets a lot of tourism. |

There's always a steady flow of people visiting there and a lot of the other areas filming took place, all good for each towns economies eh, I heard the average tourist here is spending about $1,500 a day, so a lot of businesses are benefiting.. |
