We've got a long weekend at present, so got friday off and still have tomorrow (monday) off too, it's Labour Weekend here, which was when the 8 hour working day, 40 hour working week was introduced..

Anyway, the gypsies arrived in town on wednesday and set themselves up in the local park, after getting the okay from council to do so.. Their fair started on friday morning and runs until tomorrow evening,(monday) during their time here they do various things to earn themselves some money, the main thing is a smll fair.. They also do crafts of various kinds, a few even do things like preserves and such, just like gran used to make..

I remember a few of the younger ones would go to peoples homes and do a few chores like cutting the grass or sharpening knives to earn a little money.. The gypsies are pretty honest folk and have gone to some peoples homes for quite a few years now, especially the old folks homes and will do whatever chores need doing, I've heard of a few old folk getting their homes spring cleaned for cheap..

I remember when the gypsies first started coming to town, folk said there'd be nothing but trouble, but over the years the gypsies have proven themselves to be good honest folk, and good hard workers, they're only earning enough money to keep moving round the country and keeping helping other folk like they do here.. Most folk are almost sad to see them go when they leave, probably because they've enjoyed the gypsies company, and had a few much needed chores done, or they've gone to the fair and taken part in some of the events there or bought a few things from the various stalls there..

I've often thought it would've been a decent life style being gypsy, it'd be a busy life if you had children as they need educating by law, so the parents are really busy folk, but the traveling life style would be interesting and fun at times I think, they'd possibly know more about the country than most other kiwis about.. It'd be a busy hard life, but one worth trying if you're young enough I think..

It's the last day of the Gypsy Fair today seeing it's now Monday, tomorrow will see them packing up their things and moving on to another town and repeat things there.. I haven't had time to get down and see them this year, some of the things they do are a lot of fun, and the things you can buy there are usually quite good quality too..

I've seen some hard workers in my day, but the gypsies are really good hard workers, they'll no doubt do a full day on all the fair today, then make a start on getting things packed up ready to go tomorrow..

A few of the gypsies get here a week or two early, then get casual work fruit picking or going round doing peoples lawns and gardens, they only charge what people can afford if the do gardening and such too, so some old folk who don't have any money often get jobs done for free which is good to see.. It's always a bit sad to see them leave because they could teach some of the young a good lesson or two...

Feeling a bit sorry for the gypsies at present, the weather packed in about 3 hours ago at lunch time, so it looks like they'll be packing a lot of their stuff in the wet before moving on to Havelock which is their next stop for a few days...

Well, it seems the gypsies rolled out at about 8.30 a.m. this morning, I went over and looked around and as usual the only sign they'd been there was the truck and caravan tracks on the grass, and where they'd had some of the big attractions of course.. No sight of any rubbish as usual, they clean up after themselves better than most other folk would, they even get rid of all the visitors rubbish, right down to checking the gutters and carparks for rubbish people throw out of their cars..

Feel sorry for them really, they would've worked well into the night to pack everything up, and it was fair persisting down from about 1.00 p.m. yesterday.. I suspect most of them finally got under cover and inside soaked..

It's kind of sad to think it'll be another year before they're back again..
