Tax breaks the movie company got.

I remember back to when the films were about to be made here, the government gave the movie company some quite good tax breaks in the hope they'd film here, I forget the exact figures involved now, but it added up to several million in taxes saved by the movie company..

There was quite a fuss about taxpayer money helping to fund the making of the films here, but as usual people only saw money being spent, and not the millions that could be made over and above the tax breaks in tourist revenue, I remember reading in the news about 10 years ago that the average Asian or US tourist was spending in excess off $1,000.00 a day while here, accommodation and meals were on top of that, so in some ways it was a good move giving the tax breaks as people would find out the films were filmed here and decide to visit after seeing the films, so the money the government gave in tax cuts to the film company was made back very quickly because of the increase in tourism here..

Everything here is taxed one way or another, if we buy something, or get a service like rental cars, meals, motel/hotel rooms there's GST of 15% on all of that.. If someone has a rental car or campervan, over half the cost of a litre of either petrol or diesel is either excise tax or GST and while tourists are here they spend a lot of money on travel, accommodation and meals, so the government gets their money back quite quickly, especially if there's an upturn in tourism..

The same thing happened when we won the America's Cup, The government spent millions upgrading Auckland around the port areas so the next challenge could be run here, people begrudged money being spent in Auckland upgrading for a challenge, and getting more hotels and such ready, but by the time the event had finished a lot of tourists had not only been here for the Americas Cup, they'd also had a trip round the country for several weeks too, so while Auckland businesses made huge profits, so did a lot of businesses around the country through increased tourism, if businesses make huge amounts of profit, then the government stands to make a lot more through extra GT revenue, and the extra excise tax on all the extra fuel sold, so it's a win win situation everywhere....

Some times in order to make money, we have to spend a bit, luckily someone saw the wisdom in this and realised it was a good way of getting extra money into the country through increased tourism...

Sounds as if though there was money to be made by the movie being made there. Big name actors spending money as well as crew members. It sure was a good movie.

The other thing is that we stand to get a lot of tourists too, they'll watch the films and see they were filmed here, then decide to come for a holiday.. The Chinese for instance holiday here and happily spend over $1000.00 a day each here, so the government gets the money back they gave in tax breaks very quickly...

I haven't met a person that wouldn't like to go and see where the movies were made. Glad that you get a lot of tourist out of it.
