This is one thing that's always amazed me here, I can remember while I was young we often went out for a couple of hours and would leave a few windows open, and the doors unlocked, occasionally we'd get home and find a cup or mug in the kitchen sink after a family member or friend had called in to see us and had a cuppa while they waited for us to get home, surprisingly nothing ever got stolen, if a family member borrowed something we'd find a note on the kitchen table telling us about it.. It was a very rare thing to hear of burglaries though, and all our neighbours did the same thing.. Even now I often go out for the morning and leave a window open to let in some fresh air and keep the place a little cooler in this warmer weather and no ones got in through the window and taken anything, then got out the back door which always has the key in the lock.. Admittedly I'm now in the situation where there's 49 flats very close to mine, and the neighbours all know what's going on in the place, they'd see or hear if someone broke in or if someone climbed in a window, my youngest neighbour is about 78 years of age, so they seem to have time to watch out their windows to see what everyone else is up to, but even while I was in a house somewhere it seemed an uncommon thing for folk to get unwanted visitors.. There is a couple of suburbs here where I am that folk have to make sure windows are closed and doors are locked, but it seems that the smaller towns and cities like where I am are pretty trouble free.. The only places people seem to be careful about their houses and locking up are the big cities like Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.. Auckland in particular seems to not only have people lock their houses, but also have monitored house alarms, as does Wellington.. Maybe we're lucky in the smaller towns and cities, certainly the crime rate statistics for burglaries in areas like mine are pretty low, and that's with a lot of folk going out and leaving a couple of windows open on their house that someone could easily get in and out of.. I think a lot of us older ones are fairly trusting too, we figure that the neighbours will keep an eye on the place for us while we're out and also tend to think no one will get in while we're out.. I know I've been away on a number of occasions and left a window open that someone could've climbed into relatively easily, yet I've come home 2 or 3 days later and the place has been okay.. Admittedly I wouldn't tell the insurance company I'd left a window open had I been burgled, or they wouldn't pay out on any subsequent claims, but the place was quite safe while I was away.. The worst that happened to me was we got a windy day and some rain, and the wind blew a little of the rain in, but all that took was a couple of minutes with the mop to get up any excess water on the floor... |

I remember here 10 years ago I went out, closed the door and got home 2 hours later to find I'd forgotten to lock the door.. To my amazement nothing had been touched, and nothing taken, I had quite a few valuables here at the time too.. It seems that here anyway it depends on the suburb you live in, no probs where I live, but 4 miles away in gang territory, no way, the doors and windows would be bolted and barred, lol... |

That happens a bit here during holiday times, some can't afford presents for the kids so will burgle a house, sell what they pinch and buy food.. The money they would've normally used for food has bought presents, so they steal too.. Unfortunately it's the low income people that end up stealing, and that's to look after the kids because welfare doesn't pay out enough... |
