On 25 April we'll be having ANZAC Day, this year is 100 years since Gallipoli when both Australia and NZ lost a lot of their troops fighting the Turks and trying to get a foot hold on the beaches there..

Some of ther troops that went over to fight were only 15 or 16 years of age when they left, many never returned home..

There will be services at Gallipoli, these have been booked to capacity by both kiwis and Australians for the past couple of years, obviously there was limits on the numbers of people who could attend services there because of space restrictions.. It's sad to think that hundreds of brave young men gave their lives during the Gallipoli landings so the rest of us may have a little freedom..

If I had the money and a passport I would've gone over to Gallipoli to pay my respects to the fallen heroes there, but will have to settle for going to one of the local services instead.. Let us hope this sort of thing doesn't happen again...

RIP brave men..

Lest we forget...

It was interesting to read an article at the local RSA a few months ago that mentioned New Zealand's population when both wars broke out was only one million people, yet there was one of the highest numbers of men joining up to serve out of all the commonwealth countries.. From memory here and Australia had the highest numbers of men joining the services at the outbreak of both wars, I don't remember the exact figures, but there was something in excess of 30% of men old enough to join went off to war..

Perhaps that was why the population here was one million at the start of both wars, a lot of young single men joined up, then sadly died in service, so of course never had a family before going off to war.. Many of the men that joined up were aged between 15 and 30, so the young ones more than likely didn't even have a lady friend, let alone a family of there own..

I remember my grandfather was one that served in WW1, then went back when WW2 started, luckily he came home from both wars, but thousands of men didn't return home.. There's graves in places like Gallipoli that have hundreds of kiwi and Australian soldiers buried there, perhaps that's one reason why so many people from here like to go to places like Gallipoli, they can see the graves and pay their respects to the fallen while there, and see the beaches where the troops landed..

It's sad to think that so many Australian and kiwi troops lost their lives at Gallipoli, had things been planned properly many of the men wouldn't have lost their lives, it was a sad event, and a needless loss of so many lives...
