Had my home help lady here at 9.00 a.m. this morning and she told me that the small township of Bay View, which is about 10 kilometres north of Napier had snow at 7.30 a.m. this morning, there'd also been flurries variously around the city too.. When she left Bay View at 8.00 a.m. she said there was a good 6 inches of snow there.. This is the first time we've had snow this low for almost 50 years here, normally the lowest it comes is down to 200 metres, even that only happens on rare occasions, from memory it happened last winter, once, and that was the first time that low in about 5 or 6 years.. News reports are saying that a few areas got snow down to sea level in Hawkes Bay this morning, most were only flurries of snow and only turned the grass a green and white colour, but a few places got upto 6 inches of snow.. Apparently the temperature dropped to 1 degree at the time too.. What's really weird is that the day started off with rain at around 4.30 a.m. this morning, by the look of the cloud I thought it'd be raining all day, then at 8.30 a.m. it slowly started clearing and by 9.45 a.m. it was fine.. It's now 10.50 a.m. and fine, cold but fine and just a few little white whisps of cloud here and there, but mostly nice blue sunny sky.. It's been the best part of 50 years since we last had snow here, I don't mind if we don't get any more for another 50 years, lol... |

Amazing, I've spoken to several people that've lived here in Hawkes Bay all their lives and the last time they saw snow here was over 60 years ago, but today we've gone from having a sunny day here until about 11.00 a.m. this morning to snow here by 2.30 p.m.. Usually if we get snow it's confined to the hills around the region, and at worst will be down to 150 metres above sea level.. This afternoon has seen snow down to sea level, which is a really rare thing, apparently this is about the second time since records begun about 100 years ago.. A lot of the area is so close to sea level a lot of land is actually reclamation land, and was underwater until the 1931 earthquake which brought big pieces of land just up to sea level after the quake was over.. Where I am is about 3 feet above sea level, if that, so it's really unusual to see snow.. If I had a car I'd go out and get some photos of the snow variously around the area, but at present the snows dropped in parts of the city and in a number of the suburbs between town and my place.. Napier city is only 6 kilometres from my place, or 4 miles and the city would be about 1 foot above sea level, and right slap bang on the coast too, all there is between the city and the beach is a main street and things like the national aquarium, so the sea breezes usually stop the snow from landing, it usually melts before making landfall.. The folk I've spoken to are in their late 70's and 80's, so remember the last time it snowed here which as I say in excess of 60 years ago now.. This time only gave us about 3 or 4 inches of snow, so far at least, the last time apparently saw a good foot of snow around the city and suburbs.. I won't mind if it's another 60 plus years before we get snow, lol.. I just checked the temperature and it was a balmy 2 degrees, add the windchill and it's more like -5 or -6 degrees, so there's going to be a lot of ice and black ice around overnight tonight I think.. I only hope people drive carefully on their way home from work this evening as the roads will be really slippery and treacherous... |

Usually the snow stays in the southern half of the south island and above 1200 metres in the north island, which limits it to places like Ruapehu and the Desert Road which is the state highway between Wellington and Auckland, it's usually far to mild here to get snow.. I used to live in Christchurch and Dunedin, so I saw loads of snow there, but I shifted to warmer climes getting on for 20 years ago.. I sure miss the snow, mainly for the snow fights, lol... |

The whole country is in it's own way, each region, town or city seems to have something unique to the area that makes it different and unique. A lot of folk think central and southern Otago are great area's, but that's really because you can go from city to town to sight seeing easily there, a lot of the bush walks and such are amazing for the scenery. |
