Back in 1985 the government decided to make the country nuclear free, that was of course after consultation with the country, and a referendum or two.. Seeing as the US had a neither 'confirm or deny' policy when it came to ships, and submarines being, or not being nuclear powered, or carrying nuclear weapons, it saw the end of ANZUS as we knew it because the ships stopped visiting.. Just to explain, ANZUS was the Australia, NZ and US group of countries, that was abbreviated to ANZUS for short.. It would seem that things may have changed a little since then after reading today's news, and watching the news on TV last night, it seems the government here is going to extend an invitation to the US navy to pay a visit or two to our ports again, the government here has spent a lot of time getting friendly with the US government lately with getting new export deals and such, so I suspect this is another step towards getting things back to where they were.. It also seems the US government doesn't have the same 'confirm or deny' policies over nuclear powered or nuclear weaponed ships any more.. It's only been about 24 hours since the news broke here, so there hasn't been any of the anti nuclear people protesting here yet, hopefully there won't be any protests again.. Maybe this will be a new start for both NZ and the US as far as allies go, I'd like to think so... |

I remember when it started, unfortunately it meant more than the end of the ANZUS alliance as such, it also cost us some trade. Possibly one good thing to happen was that tourism picked up afterwards, so that was a positive spin off as people saw the country mentioned in the news of the day and thought they'd visit here. Possibly it helped give us that 'clean green' image and standing up for what we believe in, so we may have lost some trade but we made it up on tourism I think, plus some. |
