How to become president of the US

I know it happens in other countries, politicians seem to love running each other down and making their opponents look bad, but from what I've seen, it seems it's worse there than anywhere else..

They have a debate coming up soon and maybe then we will know where they stand on the issues. At least that is what I am hoping for.

Does it matter if a nominee is a member of the dominant party in either senate or congress or not to become president?

I can't wait for the debates and I am not sure but I know if you want to run for president you can run under the democratic ticket even if the republicans have the house and senate.

Yes and I think there is a third person running. They are a libertarian. From what I understand.

So basically anyone can stand for president irrespective of their political beliefs, and don't have a criminal record, oh and a US citizen?
