The differences between a whanau and a hapu.

Just to elaborate on the differences between the two, a whanau is mum, dad and children.. Hapu when used in talking about family is grandparents, parents, children, and usually includes aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews, so basically the extended family..

I'm not sure how the word 'hapu' includes a woman being pregnant came about, but I guess it could be explained by the fact the word means 'extended family'.. If someone said 'she's hapu,' then she's adding to the family or whanau.. It's a little confusing at times, so in some cases it pays to be careful how a word, or words are used.. I've always felt that if in doubt, don't use certain words even though I'm fairly sure of the meaning, or meanings...
